Fire guts abandoned downtown Texarkana building VIDEO: Fire gutted an abandoned building on the edge of downtown Texarkana early Monday evening. It happened on Broad Street and Spruce Street around 6 p.m. heavy black smoke and flames could be seen billowing from the back of the building, which is a block away from the Texarkana Central Fire Station. While firefighters did not have far to go, the flames spread quickly and Fire Chief Eric Schlotter says it was already well advanced by the time the first crews arrived. Firefighters searched for possible victims but had to pull out as conditions worsened, forcing firefighters to take a defensive position and battle the flames from the outside. Schlotter says they do not believe anyone was inside the building, which has been known to be used by the homeless for shelter and was connected to a building that caught fire several months ago. KTAL-TV NBC 6 SHREVEPORT Crews Make Progress Containing Eastland Complex Wildfire That Has Burned 85 Square Miles Officials say firefighting crews are making progress containing a massive Texas wildfire that is blamed for the death of a deputy last week. The Eastland Complex has burned about 85 square miles since a series of fires broke out in an area 120 miles west of Dallas. The fires were about 60% contained as of Monday night, up from 30% containment a day before, according to Texas A&M Forest Service. The fire has burned 147 structures so far and led to the death of Deputy Sgt. Barbara Fenley, who died while going door-to-door telling residents to evacuate, officials said. "The extreme conditions present across the state last week, greatly impacted several communities and the Texans that live there," said Wes Moorehead, Texas A&M Forest Service Fire Chief. "These communities endured significant loss and we grieve with you." KTVT CBS 11 FORT WORTH Related: Four firefighters injured in wildfires burning west of Fort Worth San Antonio Fire Department, CPS Energy say drought, dust, moisture caused nearly 30 electrical poles to catch fire San Antonio firefighters were extremely busy on Monday morning, dealing with weather-related electrical fires. Nearly 30 electrical fires were reported between 4:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the San Antonio Fire Department's website and all of them were the tops of electrical poles catching fire -- some causing downed power lines or transformers blowing. As a result, CPS Energy saw as many as 14,000 customers without power at some point on Monday. "We've been in a little bit of a dry spell, then we had the wind come in and the dust accumulated over several months and then you get that little bit of moisture; you see a lot of arching wires and as a result, you get a lot of these electrical poles that catch fire," Lt. Edward Olmo, SAFD explained. Olmo said that the cause was the right combination of drought, light rain, wind, dust and old poles. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Fire crews contain Crews Gap Fire between Runnels, Coleman counties The Crew Gap Fire spread quickly because of high winds last Thursday. According to the Texas Wildfire Incident Response System, it was 90 percent contained as of Monday afternoon. Coleman County Emergency Management Coordinator John Pearce explained what it took to get to this result. "They've got it contained, it's just getting it out, getting everything out because if you don't get everything out and then the wind picks it back up to 40 miles an hour you've got in-burst that may travel as much as an hour away," Pearce said. Pearce said not only did the winds help the fire spread, but it also prevented crews from getting the upper hand sooner. "When it started we had 40 mile an hour winds and it just took off like a shot, there was nothing you really can't get in front of it because you'll get burned, you got to fight it from the black and try to put it out the other way but as fast as it was going there was no really stopping it," Pearce said. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO Austin-Travis County EMS Paramedic Practitioners Program expanding The City of Austin Paramedic Practitioner Program (PPP) is expanding both its medical and mental health services. It is now a two-person emergency services team for vulnerable populations and people experiencing homelessness. Started by the City of Austin's Office of the Chief Medical Officer and in partnership with Austin/Travis County EMS, the PPP is expected to continue hiring staff and expanding on current services during 2022. "Austin/Travis County has a lot of gaps among the vulnerable populations," said Travis Baker, Senior Paramedic Practitioner and Clinical Manager for the program. "This program delivers care that can help bridge the difference between critical care services and services that can be taken care of on-site such as stitches, IV fluids, burns, issues with asthma and other illnesses." Massive fire led to many changes in turn-of-the-century Oklahoma city Most of the early day buildings around the Enid downtown square in 1901 were built of southern hard pine. A few painted walls and some brick walls were beginning to be used. Wooden sidewalks were the standard. According to the Enid Fire Department history, the Enid City Council on Dec. 28, 1893, approved the appointment of a fire warden and assistant fire marshal, plus each business around the downtown square would be required to keep a barrel of water for protection against fire and six fire hand grenades (glass spheres containing carbon tetrachloride) to help put out any fires that occurred. On Feb. 23, 1894, the city accepted the offer of the Pabst Brewing Company to buy Enid a hook-and-ladder truck. The summer of 1894 in particular was extremely hot and dry, which sparked fire concerns. KXLY-TV ABC 4 SPOKANE Indiana fire department uses app for employee mental, physical health services VIDEO: Brownsburg firefighter Jason Stumm, in the industry for more than 20 years, says each day is unpredictable. "There are days, weeks and months sometimes that you go on runs and it's not really stressful. It's a daily event, but then you have that one run in the middle of the month that you remember. There's never one that is the same," Stumm said. "At the end of the day, somebody's life is in the balance, and you are trying to help them out." Firefighters like Stumm are constantly faced with new challenges, and like many industries, are also dealing with changes and stress from the pandemic. Earlier this year, 13News spoke with two Brownsburg paramedics who were feeling that same fatigue. "We all have reached the point where we are just so burnt out and we are tired, and it's really hard because we are still trying to take care of people," said Ashli LaLond, a paramedic for Brownsburg Fire Territory. WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS COVID Tests Show the Omicron BA.2 Subvariant Is Gaining Ground in U.S. The omicron subvariant BA.2 is continuing to gain ground in the U.S., according to Covid-19 tests sequenced over the last two weeks. Helix, a San Diego-based genomics firm, has been watching the BA.2 variant since it first popped up in the U.S. in early January. Although it was initially slow to take hold, Helix now estimates that 50% to 70% of all Covid cases nationwide are BA.2. Will Lee, Helix's chief science officer, said this type of surveillance is essential and can help arm the U.S. health care system against future variants. Read More: Should I Be Worried About Covid — Again? Data from the U.K. — where BA.2 has already caused cases to spike — show the country's rise in infections began around the same time that BA.2 surpassed the 50% mark of overall cases.
