Sherman home struck by lightning, catches on fire A Sherman home was nearly burned to the ground Sunday, May 1 due to the severe weather that hit Grayson County. On the 400 hundred block of Lopez Drive, the home was struck by lightning and caught on fire. The Grayson County Fire Marshal visited the home to survey damage. However, the home is unlivable due to the roof collapsing into the home. The Creed Canyon apartments off of Canyon Grove Road, were also struck by lightning. Staff of the complex confirmed that there was no physical damage to the complexes. However, alarms were triggered due to the storms. KXII-TV CBS/FOX 12 SHERMAN Follow-up: 2 kids killed in house fire identified as the children of a Galveston firefighter, officials say The father who desperately tried to save his two children from a burning home over the weekend is a firefighter with the Galveston Fire Department, officials confirm. The fire broke out around 2:35 a.m. Saturday on 21st Street and Avenue K. The father, Dustin Jones, managed to get out of the house and tried to rescue his two children, identified by friends and family members as Jade and Logan Jones. He and neighbors tried to go back inside, but the smoke and flames were too heavy. Warren Mies, a navy veteran who lives behind the home told KPRC 2 that his neighbor banged on his door alerting him to the fire. He and his friends, who are Army veterans, attempted to crawl inside to rescue the children, but authorities at the scene told them to step back. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Corpus Christi student set to earn firefighter, EMT certification before graduating high school VIDEO: A local teen's hard work is about to pay off as he is set to graduate from the Del Mar College firefighter and EMT program before he gets his high school diploma. AJ Cantu will soon be able to go out and find a job as a firefighter and EMT, due to a duel credit program offered through the college. "I want to change the world for the better. I want to be the change I see in the world," Cantu said. Counting down the days until he graduates, Cantu has been learning the same lifesaving skills as his older counterparts in the program. "For a high school student to complete fire and EMT is an accomplishment, it is a tough program. The same testing material is the same as Corpus Christi fire cadets," said Joe McQuary, assistant instructor of Del Mar's fire science program. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI South Lubbock 2-alarm house fire classified accidental Lubbock Fire Rescue crews responded to a structure fire Monday night in a south Lubbock neighborhood. According to LFR, crews were called to the home in the 10000 block of Troy Avenue, around 6:08 p.m. The fire was caused by a propane grill that malfunctioned at a one story single family residence, LFR stated. The fire got into the eaves of the home, then spread from the first house to the neighboring house. More units were called to the scene to assist when the blaze was upgraded to a 2nd alarm fire. The fire was contained to the two homes. According to LFR, 4 adults were displaced and the American Red Cross is assisting. The Fire Marshal's office classified the cause of the fire as accidental. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK New Killeen fire trucks to debut at push-in ceremonies The City of Killeen's Fire Department will reveal five new trucks as a part of a traditional Push-In ceremony on Wednesday morning. The day will begin with the vehicles on display from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at City Hall, located at 101 N. College Street. Fort Hood's 1st Cavalry Horse Detachment will then lead the firetrucks in a procession from the Support Fire Station on Avenue D, to the Central Fire Station – located at 201 N. 28th Street. Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King, Chief Jim Kubinski and III Corps and Fort Hood leaders will be among those who speak. The ceremony will end with a ceremonial "push-in" by City and Fire officials, as well as community members. The Push-In ceremony dates back to horse-drawn steamer engines. Horses will not walk backwards when they are under a load, so when a new steamer was delivered to a firehouse, the assigned members would have to push it into the firehouse. WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE Pennsylvania leads nation in home fire deaths Pennsylvania had more deadly house fires than any other state last year, and it may be on its way to claiming that sad distinction again. And yet many people continue to ignore or neglect the simple tool that could save their lives. The smoke detector. At least 73 people have died in fires across the state this year, according to data compiled by the U.S. Fire Administration. More than a dozen victims have been under the age of 18, including two Hellertown girls killed March 31 as flames engulfed their home. That blaze came a little more than a month after a Monroe County fire killed a Bethlehem Area School District teacher and her four grandchildren, and four months after a fire in Quakertown that killed a father and two sons on Christmas Day. "It's not just an uptick of fires we're seeing, but an uptick of severe fires with fatalities," Allentown fire Capt. John Christopher said. WILLIAMSPORT SUN-GAZETTE - METERED SITE Remembering a Hero: First responders, groups react to fallen West Virginia firefighter PHOTOS: There is an outpouring of sorrow on social media from first responders and their organizations for a Braxton County firefighter hailed as a hero after losing his life during a water rescue attempt. John Dean Forbush, 24, a four-year veteran of the Gassaway Volunteer Fire Department, died Sunday after emergency crews said a vehicle carrying Latonya Bell, 42, and her daughter, Havana Pipkins, 8, both from Cleveland, Ohio, plunged into the water. The Braxton County Sheriff's Office said Bell's vehicle accelerated before the crash, and the mother and daughter died as the result of a murder-suicide. Across social media, both nationally and locally, Forbush is being remembered for his sacrifice in the line of duty. "John Dean Forbush died trying to save a mother and child who were in a car that crashed into the Elk River in West, Virginia," a Facebook post from VFC Strong, a reality-based TV show about volunteer firefighters. WCHS-TV ABC/FOX 8 CHARLESTON All-girl firefighting squad steals the show in Arizona school district VIDEO: A unique program in a Valley school district is giving students on-the-job training and setting them up for life after graduation. While the Fire Sciences program is typically a male-driven field, a group of ladies is stealing the show. The high school students are going through the rigorous hands-on training a firefighter would do, to prepare to join a station in town. They're getting ready physically and mentally while taking some top awards while they're at it. Senior Nevaeh Hacker joined Peoria Unified School District's fire science program by accident. "When I first started the class, I had no idea what firefighters did," Hacker said. "I wasn't actually wanting to be a firefighter. I just kind of took the program to be like 'Oh yeah, it seems fun. I get out early when I can.' And then I fell in love with it." Now, Hacker is hooked. KPNX-TV NBC 12 PHOENIX Florida's Great Fire of 1901: Downtown Jacksonville burned to the ground 121 years ago today PHOTOS: 121 years ago Tuesday -- downtown Jacksonville burned to the ground. The Great Fire of 1901 destroyed 90% of downtown. To grasp the magnitude of the Great Fire of 1901, you need to understand the significance of the downtown area of Jacksonville in 1901. It was the "it" place to live and run a business. It was home to magnificent mansions, lavish hotels, and the centerpiece of entertainment. On the northside of downtown, near the corner of Union and Davis streets, was one of several businesses, the Cleveland Fiber Factory. On May 3rd, 1901, workers took their lunch break. They had laid out another large section of Spanish moss on the huge 200 foot rack that lined the outside of the wooden building to allow it to dry in the warm Florida sun. The moss was used to stuff mattresses and cushions. WJXT-TV 4 JACKSONVILLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
