Caught on camera: Life-saving equipment stolen from Houston Fire Department truck while responding to call VIDEO: They're the brave men and women you call when you need them most but last weekend, they were taken advantage of in a way the Houston Fire Department said it hasn't seen before. A pair of thieves targeted a fire truck while firefighters were helping a resident who was having a medical emergency. The crime was caught on surveillance video. It happened Saturday near the intersection of Little York Road and Hollister Street. The neighbor who noticed what was happening asked KHOU 11 News to conceal her identity. "I didn't think anything of it until they got out and they were checking out the fire truck," she said. "I couldn't believe that people like that exist in Houston. I have never heard of anything happening like this before." A car with paper plates starting with "720" was seen pulling into a parking spot near the fire truck. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Chemical release forces evacuation of hundreds of employees at Mansfield business Nearly 300 employees at a Mansfield company are safe after a dangerous chemical release on Monday afternoon. The incident happened at Dura-Tech located at 109 Sentry Drive. Mansfield firefighters are trying to narrow down what led to the chemical release. An Arlington Fire Department hazmat team also responded to the scene. The team had to be sprayed off in their hazmat suits after being inside Dura-Tech. The chemical release forced the evacuation of 260 employees. Paramedics treated four employees reportedly exposed to the chemical. But they refused medical transport for further treatment, according to Jeff Smith of the Mansfield Police Department. Smith shared the chemical release involved nitric acid that can irritate the skin if exposed and can lead to breathing issues. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Longview fire captain grateful for passing of bond to support firefighters ‘past, present and future' Longview firefighters are breathing a sigh of relief after the Longview Firefighter Obligation Bond passed in Saturday's election. The $45.6-million-dollar bond was passed with 59 percent of the vote. Longview Fire Captain Kolby Beckham is also Chairman of the Longview Fireman's Relief and Retirement Fund. He says he and pretty much the whole department are excited about the pension obligation bond passing on May 7. "Especially considering the climate of the economy in a tough area right now; housing prices, valuations going up. The fact that our community Longview came together and showed their support for the fire department here in Longview is absolutely wonderful," Beckham said. Beckham says this will benefit the entire Longview Fire Department. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER ‘Thousands of bees': Snyder man attacked by bees A Snyder, Texas man was attacked by bees Monday morning. The Snyder Volunteer Fire Department responded to the bee attack on the 2700 block of 37th Street around 11:00 a.m. Fire officials, who did successfully remove the hive, posted pictures and video on social media, saying there were thousands of bees inside that were acting ‘particularly aggressive' and they could still be swarming in the area. It's currently unknown if the bees are Africanized and it's also unknown to what extent the bee attack victim was injured. "Many people are allergic to bee stings and even one can be fatal," the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department explains. "We urge you to take action if you are aware of swarms or hives on your property." Residents can contact the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department at (325) 573-6215. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Man accused of setting fires in, taking machete to historic Tyler building A man accused of setting multiple fires inside an historic building in downtown Tyler had an unusual method of attempted escape. Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley said Byron Orcallana, 21, of Tyler was arrested early Saturday morning after setting two small fires on two different floors of the Fair Foundation Building near the downtown Tyler square. The fires did a minimal amount of damage in a small area to some clothes and carpeting. However, Findley said Orcallana caught the attention of emergency responders at ground level when he attempted to hack his way out of the building using a machete. Viewing the front of the structure from Broadway Ave., it is apparent that a portion of the building facade has been ripped off from the frame. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Texas' weather this spring is feeling ‘eerily similar' to 2011, a big drought year It's hard to really understand what 2011 was like in Texas if you didn't live through it. The year was a blast furnace, marked by drought, triple-digit heat and historic wildfires. It started with a dry winter that quickly turned into a hot and dry spring, setting the state up for a stretch of scorching months that lasted long into the fall. The weather so far this year has Randy Denzer worried. "It feels like 2011 again," the vice president of the Austin Firefighters Association said. "Even without getting into the science and all that stuff, I'm just talking about the gut feelings of the firefighters who have been there before." His gut may be on to something. Once again, a La Niña weather pattern has coincided with a drier-than-usual winter. Drought has gripped large swaths of the state, bringing frequent wildfires. TEXAS STANDARD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Massachusetts fire spreads to nearly half a dozen homes, buildings VIDEOS: Multiple buildings are damaged following a large fire that broke out Monday afternoon in Salem, Massachusetts. The three-alarm fire started just before 4 p.m. along Hancock Street between Canal and Lafayette streets. Video from Sky 5 showed flames extending from one triple-decker home to other structures nearby. As many as six homes were engulfed in flames just before 7 p.m. Monday. One person told WCVB he was taking a nap while doing laundry, then woke up coughing. "I looked out the back door, and I saw smoke," one man, who escaped the fire with his dog said. "I grabbed my dog and we went. Scooby Doo made it." First responders and neighbors were going door to door to evacuate residents from the neighborhood. "I just heard everyone yelling, 'Get out! Get out!' and banging on the house. 'There's a fire!'" said Tyler Carlton. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON North Carolina city to purchase electric fire truck, build one of the first all-electric stations VIDEO: The future home of Station 30 is going to be electric and more than just in looks. The city of Charlotte's budget includes funding to build a new Station 30 in southwest Charlotte. The newly constructed fire facility will be on Beam Road and will be "all electric," complete with the city's first electric fire truck. "We are a climate change city, so we are going to try these things," Mayor Vi Lyles said after the budget presentation. The electric fire station is included in the budget as part of the $20.8 million set aside for building new fire facilities. The city's budget says Charlotte will be one of the first cities in the country to make this investment. The electric fire station, complete with the necessary infrastructure, is one of at least three fire facilities that is slated to be built. The $20.8 million is part of an estimated $48 million investment over three years. WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE Man charged after allegedly breaking into Hawaii fire station while firefighters were inside asleep A 27-year-old was charged after allegedly breaking into a Kaimuki fire station, where law enforcement sources say he was discovered naked in a bathroom. The suspect allegedly broke in through a ground floor bathroom window while firefighters were inside asleep. Just after 2 a.m. Sunday, a firefighter reported being woken up by a man who had flipped on the lights inside the dorm at Fire Station No. 5 in Kaimuki. The suspect was allegedly wearing a Honolulu Fire Department t-shirt. Initially, the witness thought the 27-year-old was just another firefighter. But later, when he got up to use the bathroom, he found the suspect standing naked in front of a sink. It's a story that left people in the neighborhood puzzled. "It's crazy. I guess. I don't know what the objective was," said Ricky Garcia. HAWAII NEWS NOW Pittsburgh firefighters no longer required to live in city, under legal settlement with union The city of Pittsburgh and the firefighters' union have agreed firefighters no longer must live within the city limits, reaching a negotiated end to an ongoing legal battle. "This is a great thing for not only the city, the citizens, but the firefighters who serve here," Ralph Sicuro, president, Pittsburgh Firefighters Union Local #1, told Pittsburgh's Action News 4. "In order to work with the administration, Mayor Gainey's vision of diversity within the fire department. One of the barriers that has always been identified was the restriction on residency, both for the employee as well as for the applicant. We were able to reach a settlement that took care of both of those issues, all in one. Now we're going to be able to achieve a much more robust recruitment drive and hopefully achieve the diversity we're all looking for." WTAE-TV ABC 4 PITTSBURGH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
