City of Texarkana Names Interim Fire Chief Chris Black The City of Texarkana, Texas named its new Interim Fire Chief, Chris Black, this past Saturday, October 29th. The change comes after the position was vacated by former Fire Chief, Eric Schlotter. Schlotter has recently taken a new position as Fire Chief for the City of Aubrey, Texas. City Manager David Orr gave his congratulations on Black's new appointment. "We welcome this new change and are fortunate to have someone with such skill and experience step into this role," said Orr. "Interim Chief Black brings many years of dedication and service to our fire department, and we are happy to have him lead us through this transition." Black first began his career as a firefighter in 1997 with the Texarkana Texas Fire Department. TXK TODAY A visit to one of the 'most haunted' fire stations in the country, in El Paso VIDEO: El Paso Firestation Number 9 is one of the most haunted fire stations in the country, according to firerescue1.com. ABC-7's Drew Cosgray went to the fire station in Central El Paso to hear about the tale. Firefighters at the station constantly hear doors open and footsteps while no one else is there and will be woken up right before a call in the middle of the night. Jesse Esterline, who has been a firefighter at Station 9 for six years, has had some odd encounters, and so has his friend Enrique Dueñas, another firefighter at the station. The story is told that Captain Bloxom, the captain of Station 9 in 1934, responded to a fire across the street and did not make it out alive. The firefighters believe Bloxom haunts the building and, above all, likes to play pranks on firefighters. KVIA-TV ABC/CW 7 EL PASO Lost wheel spark ignites large grass fire in Brazoria County, officials say PHOTOS: A spark from a boat trailer led to an hours-long fight by several fire departments to put out a large grass fire in Brazoria County. The Oyster Creek Community Volunteer Fire Department responded to CR-227 near FM-2004 around 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters said a boat trailer lost its wheel, causing a spark, which started the fire. It took Oyster Creek Community VFD firefighters, in collaboration with U.S. Fish & Wildlife and at least seven other local fire departments, about seven hours to extinguish the flames. The fire department shared several photos of the massive flames and destruction they left behind. Officials said it's unclear how many acres burned in the fire. Less than a week ago, Brazoria County announced an outdoor burn ban due to dry conditions. KTRK ABC 13 HOUSTON Brazos County Volunteer Fire Department wins $5,000 donation Brazos County Volunteer Fire Department in Precinct Two received a $5,000 donation from Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers ‘Jaws of Life' campaign. The mission was to help under-funded fire departments across the state of Texas raise much needed funding for equipment vital for saving lives. The volunteer fire department won an online contest by garnering the most votes. They plan on spending the much needed money on battery powered extrication tools to replace their current gas powered hydraulic ones. Commonly known as the jaws-of-life, the current tools used are heavy and burdensome, according to the VFD. Rick Wagner, the Assistant Fire Chief for Brazos County District Two Volunteer Fire Department described speed as the most important element when rescuing people from car crashes. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Halloween house fire overshadows trick or treating in San Antonio A family on the Northwest Side got more than just a scare on Halloween after their home caught fire as trick-or-treaters were hitting the street. San Antonio firefighters and police responded to the fire on Timewilde near Timber Glade Monday evening. Officials blocked off a part of the road as crews worked to tame the flames. Firefighters don't know the cause of the fire but know it started in the backyard and spread to the home and attic, causing extensive damage. SAFD said the home is uninhabitable due to the damage, adding that the couple living there will stay with family for the time being. While authorities worked on the fire, the street remained closed to cars but not the foot traffic of trick-or-treaters. "It's the fun, you know, kid holiday, and you see this tragedy right in the middle of it… it's like, are we happy or are we sad," said Nahtee Jimison, a mother dressed as "Where's Waldo." VIDEO: 100+ people displaced after 3-alarm fire rips through Maryland apartment Montgomery County firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire in Rockville Monday morning, that has left more than 100 residents searching for a new place to live, just weeks before the holiday season begins. Fire crews were called to a three-story apartment building in the 800 block of College Parkway just before 9 a.m. When crews arrived, they found the building with heavy fire conditions and called a second and third alarm to get more firefighters to the scene. The blaze roared through the attic, eventually spreading to a second building, and leaving about 30 buildings gutted by smoke and flames or flooded by water. Firefighters said two residents were injured and rushed to the hospital, but they said both were expected to survive. Neighbors say firefighters had to break through the window of one of the victims here to get him out as fire raged above him, while another victim got a face full of burning embers. KVIA-TV ABC/CW 7 EL PASO 'I feel lucky': Tom Greif doesn't let MS stop him from being a fire chief in Idaho When Tom Greif has a day off, one would expect him to unwind from the pressures of being Coeur d'Alene's fire chief. Perhaps spend a day golfing or fishing, two of his passions. Which he might. But disconnect? Even for a few hours? He can't. "Even if I go away for the week or go on vacation, I don't truly unplug. I don't feel like I can. I'm in a position now where I need to know what's going on," Greif said. It's been more than six months since he stepped in to take the place of the well-liked Kenny Gabriel, who retired after 30 years with the department. Greif oversees a department of about 70 people with an annual budget of nearly $13 million. Its four stations respond to about 10,000 calls, mostly medical, a year. That kind of responsibility might make one tense and serious. Greif, though, is relaxed and friendly. The former deputy fire chief was chosen from among four internal candidates. COEUR D'ALENE PRESS New York City artist gifts painting to FDNY members who saved his life after he went into cardiac arrest VIDEO: A New York City artist wanted to thank the men and women who saved his life in the best way he knew how -- with a work of art. Ray Trosa is a New York native hailing from Astoria, Queens whose mixed-media art style spans from large-scale paintings to lighting design. Back in April 2022, Trosa suffered a medical emergency and when members from FDNY Station 49 arrived, his condition worsened and he went into cardiac arrest. The EMTs and paramedics acted quickly, performing measures to revive Trosa and bring him back to life. Last week, Trosa celebrated his 50th birthday and wanted to spend it with the first responders who saved his life. Trosa visited Station 49 and met EMTs Zelman Shapira Jr. and Sandra Cotton, FDNY Paramedics Ralph Maisonneuve and Yani Borukhov, and Lieutenant Tony Voxakis who responded to the 911 call that day.
