Plano Fire Chief Announces Move to City Hall The fire chief of Plano appears to be on the move but just by a few blocks. Sam Greif announced on social media Monday night that he will be the city's new Deputy City Manager over public safety. Greif says he's never seen himself as anything but a firefighter but looks forward to the new opportunity. "It will be forty years on January 3rd, 2022 that I began my EMS career and a few years later became a firefighter. The journey has been incredible and the friendships and relationships will last until I go to heaven," Greif wrote in a Facebook post. The chief says "the transition is still fluid" and will share details later. He'll replace Greg Rushin who will retire in January. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Fire devastates downtown Sherman's Kelly Square Fire officials determined a cause behind the fire Sunday night in downtown Sherman. In one way or another, fire officials said all 17 businesses inside Kelly Square could be dealing with smoke damage. But for the stores where the flames burned brightest, the situation is much worse. "There is standing water everywhere," said Karen Tooley, the executive director of Downtown Sherman NOW. "There is black soot everywhere, on every surface, glass everywhere, and you look up in the atrium the chandeliers have melted." Sunday night, flames engulfed parts of Kelly Square in downtown Sherman leaving many businesses closed and devastated. T.J. LaRosa owns one of the stores inside called Fulbelli's. He and his wife were getting ready to celebrate the restaurant's 10 year anniversary. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Arson investigators respond to fire started outside central Austin synagogue Arson investigators responded to a fire that started on the ground outside of a synagogue Sunday night, the Austin Fire Department said. Firefighters responded to the Congregation Beth Israel located at 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd, which is just north of 38th Street and east of MoPac, around 9 p.m. Investigators from AFD will work to determine the cause. According to AFD, there was no damage to the inside of the synagogue. An AFD spokesman said this photo shared on Twitter shows the extent of the damage caused by the fire. There were no injuries. An officer with the Austin police department was on scene, at last check, as AFD was investigating. The fire comes on the heels of a week since antisemitic banners were first seen displayed on a MoPac overpass north of where the fire started Sunday night. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Texas forest service airplanes in Abilene to help fight Buck Fire in Throckmorton County The Texas A&M Forest Service reported Tuesday morning that the Buck Fire in Throckmorton County has reached 18,688 acres and is 95% contained. The increase in acreage since yesterday is due to more accurate mapping, the Forest Service said in a social media update. The Texas A&M Forest Service opened a single engine air tanker base in Abilene to help in the response to the wildfire in Throckmorton County. Three small airplanes relocated to the base on Saturday and began supporting fire crews on the ground trying to create fire breaks around the wildfire dubbed Buck Fire that started Thursday, said Stuart Morris, a regional wildland-urban interface coordinator with the Texas A&M Forest Service. Forest service personal from Fort Stockton, Burkburnett, McGregor, Merkel and San Angelo responded to the wildfire. ABILENE REPORTER NEWS - METERED SITE Follow Up: Good Samaritan helps save baby in Killeen fire A Killeen apartment caught fire Monday morning around 3:45 a.m. There were three people in the home and all are in stable condition. A bystander helped save the baby before firefighters arrived on scene. Fire Chief James Kubinski said the fire was in between the mother and the exit. She didn't want to harm her baby, so she looked out the back window and found someone standing there ready to catch her baby. "It was a controlled drop from a second floor window down to somebody with arms out stretched," Kubinski said. "It still is the fact that they were willing to save somebody's baby for them." The mother handed off her baby to the person. "I don't care if it was three inches or three feet," Kubinski said. "The second you release that baby, to not know what your fate is going to be has got to be the most difficult decision you have to make in that situation." KLBK-TV CBS 13 LUBBOCK Allen Fire crews bring the heat during monthlong flashover training Bring the heat! Allen firefighters and Battalion Chiefs completed flashover training throughout October. This is the first departmentwide flashover simulation for Allen Fire Department (AFD). "Flashover training is an opportunity for firefighters to see the edge of their operational capabilities," says Roger Nolen, AFD administrative Captain. "They can experience how it feels while minimizing the risk to injury, which is essential to their effectiveness and safety." Flashover training is a controlled simulation conducted by instructors. Flashover is a stage of fire progression in which all combustible items in a compartment ignite. Flashover conditions do not allow for survival for anyone unprotected, and only seconds for firefighters in protective gear. CITY OF ALLEN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WGHP-TV FOX 8 HIGH POINT A potentially faster-spreading Delta variant, AY.4.2, has been spotted in 8 states A potentially faster-spreading "sub-lineage" of the coronavirus Delta variant named AY.4.2 has been spotted by labs in at least 8 states, and health authorities in the United Kingdom say they are investigating a growing share of cases from this strain of the virus. Labs in California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Washington state, plus the District of Columbia, have so far spotted at least one case of AY.4.2. While it may spread somewhat faster, health authorities have not found evidence of more severe illness caused by the variant, and they say current vaccines remain effective against it. The sub-lineage has remained a small fraction of circulating cases in the U.S. for several weeks, but American health officials say they are already ramping up efforts to study the new Delta variant descendant.
