FBI investigating after explosion outside Texas Public Radio headquarters in downtown San Antonio VIDEO: The FBI and local authorities are investigating after an apparent bomb was detonated under a sculpture outside of Texas Public Radio headquarters in downtown San Antonio early Monday morning. No one was injured in the explosion, which was caught on surveillance video presented by TPR. The video shows someone placing a device near the statue, called "Miss Mao Trying to Poise Herself at the Top of Lenin's Head," at 2:25 a.m. and is edited to then show the explosion just six minutes later. FBI officials told KENS 5 they were "working with our federal, state and local partners to determine what happened." SAFD's arson unit was also assisting in the investigation. Neither agency said whether they believed the statue was being specifically targeted. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Follow up: East Texas fire departments volunteer to help Hughes Springs Volunteer Fire Department It is going to take a lot to clean up all the damage the tornado caused to parts of Hughes Springs. A home in the area and City Hall suffered damage, but it doesn't compare to the Hughes Springs Volunteer Fire Department. It is completely destroyed, the roof is blown off and you can see right through the building. Jay Cates, the Fire Chief, confirmed it is a total loss. Communities far and wide are helping to clean up pieces of debris. Fire departments from as far as 50 miles away are coming to help in any way they can. The Fire Chief says any untouched equipment will go to local storage units and local fire departments will help with calls until they can replace what is broken. "It was disbelief, I still can't believe it's happened, but everyone's working hard. Other departments are here today helping out and everything," said Fire chief Cates. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Combustibles 'improperly stored' on floor furnace blamed for Amarillo house fire The Amarillo Fire Department said combustibles "improperly stored" on a floor furnace are to blame for a house fire over the weekend. Around 10:40 a.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to a home in the 2000 block of South Washington Street. When they arrived, smoke was billowing out of the front door. Witnesses said someone was still in the house. As firefighters entered the home, the person got out safely. Crews extinguished the fire that was coming from a floor furnace in the entry way. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Detectives looking into north Houston car fire with body found inside Little York Fire Department responded to a call about a car that was on fire in north Houston on Sunday at about 11 p.m. Upon crews arriving, they said they found the parked car fully in flames on the side of a road, behind an apartment complex at 14400 Ella Blvd. After putting out the fire, they discovered a body inside. The Harris County Sheriff's Homicide Division became involved and said they are waiting for the autopsy from the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. Because the car was was found parked and there was no accident involved, detectives say they believe the fire was intentional. Loop and was impacting the nearby El Paso Community College Valle Verde campus. The community college issued a shelter in place order and then decided to evacuate the Valle Verde campus as much as possible. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO Inside City of Houston's level one safety plan in preparation for Astros' championship parade VIDEO: There were upwards of 1 million people in downtown Houston to watch the Astros' World Series parade. While official numbers are still being tallied up with the city of Houston, we do know that the parade this time was twice the length of 2017's championship parade. The police presence downtown was undeniable, but behind the scenes watching from a distance were some of the top security officers in Houston who were ready to implement disaster plans. The Houston Astros won and the crowds converged, fans coming in from across the state all for a glimpse at our World Series Champions. "The mayor invited people to come out, they closed schools and folks came out," George Buenik, the Director of Public Safety and Homeland Security in Houston, said. As hundreds of thousands flooded into downtown, the celebration turned into a very serious security operation. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEOS: 1 injured after extra-alarm fire damages 4 homes in Chicago One person was seriously injured after an extra-alarm house fire in the Logan Square neighborhood Tuesday morning, the Chicago Fire Department said. The fire broke out in a three-story, single-family home in the 2400-block of North Washtenaw Avenue at about 6 a.m. and spread to several neighboring homes. Chopper 7HD flew above the scene with flames 40 to 50 feet high. At one point, flames and smoke intensified, forcing firefighters off of one of the rooftops. By 7:30 a.m., CFD officials said the main fire had been struck. An elderly person was transported in serious but stable condition, CFD said. Multiple people have been displaced by the fire. CFD said one home is a total loss, with three others being severely damaged. The CTA has detoured the #74 Fullerton bus around the area. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO 80-year volunteer firefighter from New York celebrates 100th birthday VIDEO/PHOTOS: A Rockland man believed to be the longest serving firefighter in New York State celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday. Things were a lot different 80 years ago when Amiel D'Auria first volunteered for the Chelsea Hook and Ladder Company in Nyack. "We had to be right up in front of everything," said D'Auria. "In those days, when you went up the ladder you couldn't talk to the driver or anything. If you had any trouble you used to have to swing back and forth." Remarkably, the great-grandfather is still very active in the fire department. "I love to get on and help the guys all the time. When I was 90 years old I would still go to a fire." Company members say D'Auria is now the longest serving volunteer firefighter in New York State and on Sunday, they celebrated their honorary battalion chief for his 100th birthday. NEWS 12 THE BRONX His friend took his life, now this Virginia firefighter hopes to build a safe place for first responders VIDEO: The fire that lit inside a Chesterfield Firefighter two years ago launched a mission to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health among first responders who accomplish some of the most stressful and emotional work of any profession on a daily basis. Back in 2020, a close friend of Lt. Kenny Mitchell, who was also a firefighter, took his own life. While attending a memorial gathering for his friend, Mitchell jotted down a refrain he heard from so many first responders that day. "This [expletive] keeps happening because there's nobody to talk to, there's nobody to talk to, there's nobody to talk to. I look out here and I think, there's everybody to talk to!" Mitchell said to a crowd of people at the Independence Golf Club Sunday afternoon. "Operating inside the yellow tape is difficult, outside of the yellow tape is where we have most of our problems." WTVR-TV CBS 6 RICHMOND At overdose events in one Rhode Island city, arrests by police and combative behavior are rare, study finds While police officers are often dispatched alongside other first responders when drug overdoses are reported, an analysis of hundreds of overdose events in one Rhode Island city found that there were scant incidents that actually needed involvement from law enforcement. "It was surprising and promising to find that arrests only occurred in about 1% of all cases of overdoses attended by police," said Alexandria Macmadu, study co-author and a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Epidemiology at Brown University's School of Public Health. "The research shows that there were few situations that truly required law enforcement presence due to safety concerns." The first responders who are dispatched to an overdose incident often include police, fire rescue personnel and emergency medical services, Macmadu said. NEWS FROM BROWN PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
