Brownsville firefighter remembered as a 'pioneer' following battle with cancer VIDEO: A Brownsville woman will be remembered as a fighter, in and out of the Brownsville Fire Department. On Sunday, Cindy Puente lost her life after a hard battle with breast, lung, and brain cancer. "It's a terrible loss," Brownsville Fire Lt. Rodrigo Rangel said. "Cindy's been a staple of our department since I came in. When I came in, she was already an experienced driver." Puente worked with the Brownsville Fire Department for 22 years. She was only the second woman firefighter to be hired by the department. She also became the first woman to drive the department's fire trucks. "She was obviously a pioneer in the firefighting industry," Brownsville Deputy Fire Chief Rick Najera said. "She knew the industry, she knew firefighting tactics. She was a great woman as well as a great firefighter driver." Station 7 was where she spent her final years as a driver. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO Couple and their 2 dogs lose their Atascocita home to fire VIDEOS: Investigators believe a lightning strike may be the cause of a devastating house fire in northeast Harris County just two days before Thanksgiving. The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office posted on Facebook about the fire around 1 p.m., urging residents to avoid the area in the 16800 block of Fowler Pines Drive. The homeowners told ABC13 they were not home at the time the fire started. Investigators said neighbors were evacuated as firefighters battled the flames. Atascocita fire officials said the fire started just before 1 p.m. in the garage area, shortly after neighbors reported hearing a loud lightning strike, though the cause is still under investigation. Vincent Rodriguez, with the fire department, said firefighters rescued the homeowners' two dogs "just in time." Rodriguez told Eyewitness News that the dogs were given oxygen and were OK. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Corpus Christi Fire Department trains for Harbor Bridge Project work VIDEO: The Corpus Christi Fire Department received crucial hands-on training Monday morning for the new Harbor Bridge Project. The training was conducted by Harbor Bridge developer Flatiron Dragados as the project enters a phase that may involve hazardous environments. Monday's scenario focused on firefighters rescuing someone in a confined hazardous space at a high elevation. Although these situations are unfamiliar to the firefighters, it is crucial for them to learn from these training exercises to challenge their skill set. "They give us opportunities to train in areas we don't normally train in," said CCFD Battalion Chief J.B. Devisser. "That always is a challenge to the firefighters. We put them in different scenarios. We kind of let them exercise their mind, to figure out what to do in this scenario." KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

But when firefighters from the Gastonia Fire Department arrived, they saw the flames shooting in the air and upgraded it to a commercial fire. Firefighters believe fire started in one of the 50 rooms in the motel. Gastonia Fire Chief Phillip Welch Jr. was confident no one was inside. A dozen units responded using 65 firefighters. The Interstate 85 exit for Cox Road was closed for several hours by Gastonia Police. The hotel has been abandoned for years, according to authorities.
