'He fought like hell': Lubbock firefighter dies four years after line of duty injury The Lubbock Fire Department is mourning the loss of a firefighter who died four years after suffering a line of duty injury. Matt Dawson died Sunday at his home "after a long and courageous fight." Dawson was critically injured January 11, 2020 while working a crash on an icy I-27. A vehicle crossed into the median and hit Dawson, a second firefighter and one police officer. Lt. Eric Hill and Officer Nicholas Reyna were killed in the crash. Dawson suffered a traumatic brain injury and was left with long-term disabilities. "Lubbock Fire Rescue and the Lubbock community are heartbroken at the sudden and unexpected loss of our friend and brother, Matt Dawson," said Fire Chief Shaun Fogerson. "We will never know the number of lives that Firefighter Dawson touched both in and out of the department, but we do know that his legacy, courage, and bravery will live on forever." KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Firefighters battle fire at abandoned business complex in north Austin VIDEO: A fire tore through an abandoned business in North Austin early Monday morning. Investigators believe someone started the fire, and they're trying to figure out who. A passer-by called in the fire shortly before 5 a.m. at a former landscaping business complex in the 2100 block of Polaris Avenue, just off Burnet Road near US 183. The building was packed with very flammable landscaping supplies, setting up a dangerous situation for arriving fire crews. "There was actually a lot of fire load within that building. And if you notice from the videos, the building is actually constructed of primarily cinder blocks, which creates a very high heat, high temperature area for the fire to grow in essentially with all the materials inside. So it was a lot of fire," said Rachael Lewis, a public information officer with the Austin Fire Department. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Fire claims life of 83-year-old Groves woman, may have started as electrical fire An 83-year-old Groves woman died in a house fire on Friday that may have been caused by an electrical issue. The body of Norma Cole, 83, of Groves, was found following a house fire on November 24, 2023, according to Jefferson County Precinct Two Justice of the Peace Joseph Guillory II. The preliminary investigation suggests that the fire may have started as an electrical fire Groves Fire Chief Lance Billeaud told 12News Monday morning. However, firefighters are still awaiting results from the complete investigation he said. The fire happened at a home in the 6600 block of Madison Ave on Friday just after 3 p.m. according to Groves Fire Department Investigator H. Grove. Judge Guillory has ordered an autopsy. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke and flames could be seen on the west side of the home and the porch according to Grove. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Neighbors recall terrifying moments a warehouse fire led to partial roof collapse in southwest Houston VIDEO: The Houston Fire Department is investigating a warehouse fire after the building's roof partially collapsed in southwest Houston. At about 10:30 a.m. Monday, firefighters responded to the 20,000-square-foot building in the 12600 block of Bellaire Boulevard. The building is located next to an apartment complex. Neighbors described the frantic moments after the fire started. "I thought something was burning in my kitchen," Kennie Lawson recalled. "I saw smoke all over the living room. I went outside, and the whole sky was dark. I was like, 'What's going on? Is that a bomb or something?'" Luckily, no one was hurt. A stretch of Dairy Ashford Road was closed for hours. It reopened several hours after the fire started. Firefighters aren't sure about the cause, but they did question someone. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES New York bill would require fire safety precautions in e-bike shops Shops in New York state that peddle e-bikes would be required to implement enhanced fire safety precautions under a newly introduced bill aimed at curbing New York City's e-bike fire crisis. The legislation, which would mandate automatic fire monitoring and Class B extinguishers in e-bike shops, is part of a package of e-bike safety bills proposed by state Sen. Iwen Chu, a Brooklyn Democrat. Another bill would set new standards for e-bike batteries. "There is an urgency here," Chu said in an interview. "We're working to save lives." Since New York City lifted its e-bike ban in 2018, the devices have proliferated across the city, posing a growing safety challenge. E-bikes are powered by flammable lithium-ion batteries that can spark fast-moving infernos. OLEAN TIMES HERALD - METERED SITE The deadliest nightclub fire in the world occurred 81 years ago in Massachusetts VIDEO: Tuesday marks the anniversary of the deadliest nightclub fire in history, which occurred right in Massachusetts. On November 28, 1942, more than 490 people were killed in a fire at the Cocoanut Grove on Piedmont Street in Boston. The Cocoanut Grove was a restaurant/club that was very popular in the 20s, became less popular in the 30s due to the prohibition of alcohol, but became popular again during the early years of World War II. According to the Boston Fire Historical Society, the Cocoanut Grove was a single-story building, where the first floor was a restaurant with a ballroom floor and the basement contained a bar called the Melody Lounge. During the warmer months, the roof in the dining room was retractable to let guests dine under the moon and stars. The main entrance to the building was a revolving door facing Piedmont Street. WWLP-TV NBC/CW+ 22 SPRINGFIELD Made in Arizona, Fido Bags are shipped to fire departments across the country as a lifesaving tool for pets in emergencies VIDEO: First responders lacked the tools needed to give pets the best chance of survival in emergencies for decades, but now, a Valley nonprofit is providing those tools to fire and police departments across the country. "We pull out more dogs and cats and stuff than actual humans." Phoenix firefighter Bobby Laufer said. About 40,000 pets die in fires every year, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Marie Peck wants to lower that statistic. Peck founded the Fetch Foundation and went on to create The Fido Bag. Each bag is filled with essential items needed to help save pets. "What it means to our firefighters and police officers, knowing they can do something now," Peck said. "There's some of our older guys who have told me 'if they only had it back in the day.'"
