Almost 40 tenants evacuated from their San Antonio apartments due to 2-alarm fire VIDEO: A fire early Tuesday morning at an apartment complex on the northside has displaced almost 40 tenants from their homes. It happened just before 3 a.m. at The Place at Oak Hills apartments off Northwest Military Highway near Lockhill Selma Road. When first responders arrived, they found flames shooting out of a second floor apartment. A second alarm was called and firefighters began evacuating everyone out of the building. Approximately 30-40 people evacuated and gathered at the nearby basketball court. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and but are still checking for any hot spots to ensure the fire doesn't spread to any other units. No injuries have been reported and no word yet on what may have started the fire. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Fire damages detached garage behind Bryan home PHOTO: Bryan firefighters responded to a fire Monday afternoon that damaged a detached garage behind a home. The home sits on the corner of Indiana Ave and Wilhem Drive. Before firefighters arrived, large flames and thick smoke could be seen pouring out of the backyard. Nobody was injured and investigators are looking into what started it. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Critical needs funding available for Lubbock County's 11 volunteer fire departments Each of Lubbock County's eleven volunteer fire departments can now apply for one-time critical needs funding. The Commissioners set aside half a million dollars in this year's budget for equipment, specifically, the Commissioners want to replace old tools and invest in protective gear. County Judge Curtis Parrish said, "So I want to make sure they have good bunker gear, helmets, masks, oxygen, all those things they need to keep us safe and protected while they go and do their job. I want to make sure if they go out to fight a fire or work a wreck that they go home at the end of the day." The departments will have until New Year's Eve to submit their requests. Fiery tractor trailer crash kills woman in New York, shuts down part of expressway VIDEOS: A woman was killed when her car was sandwiched between two tractor trailers and went up in flames in a horrific crash that caused delays in both directions on the Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx. The victim's sedan collided with a tractor trailer, contracted by the U.S. Postal Service, in the westbound lanes at around 12:35 a.m. Tuesday. The woman was sitting in her crashed sedan, stopped behind the tractor trailer, when another tractor slammed into her vehicle. The impact set the sedan ablaze, and the flames spread to the first tractor trailer. The woman was killed in the fire. Both tractor trailer drivers escaped their rigs with no injury, but the first truck was also destroyed by fire. All westbound lanes of the expressway were closed, and one lane was getting by eastbound as first responders worked to douse the flames and police investigated. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Florida fire department gets new airplane training facility VIDEO: The Charlotte County Fire and EMS headquarters is about to become a hot place. Tuesday, the county will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new $9 million Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting training facility. It's a simulator, that looks like a normal-sized passenger jet, sitting on the county property behind the fire administration building. "So the seats are the same, the aisles are the same, the cockpit is the same, the dimensions are the same," Charlotte County Fire Battalion Chief, Larry Lippel, says. But this airplane is steel, all black, and made to burn. With a few taps on an iPad, crews can set fire to the wings or the cargo area, and safely control the flames and the heat of the fire. They can also set up safe zones, where other firefighters can watch the active training. Every firefighter who works in an area with an airport needs to get aircraft fire training once a year. WFTX-TV FOX 4 CAPE CORAL Colorado: Smart phones or watches might be calling 911 without you knowing, and dispatchers need it to stop VIDEO: We're talking between 40 to 60 fake 911 calls a day, coming into the Summit County Dispatch Center. Team members expect this only to get worse as the season picks up for skiers. Summit County Director 911, Trina Dummer, was more than happy to sit down with CBS News Colorado to get a message out to the public before a big gift-giving holiday begins. She warns that some versions of Apple Watches and iPhone 14s have a system on them that automatically sends a 911 call if they detect a crash. The issue is, every one of those calls that came in this year have not been real emergencies. The calls have been people crashing while skiing but being fine or even stopping too suddenly while skiing. The alert system gives someone 20 seconds to stop the alarm from going out to dispatch, but according to dispatchers that's simply not happening for whatever reason. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER Ford Recalls Nearly 522,000 Escapes, Bronco Sports Over Fire Risk Ford's latest major recall affects nearly 522,000 of its popular Escape and Bronco Sport mid-size SUVs. The issue involves a fuel leak inside the engine compartment. Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-23 Escapes and model-year 2021-23 Bronco Sports equipped with 1.5-liter engines. The issue is with the fuel injector, which may crack and leak; as a result, fuel or fuel vapor may accumulate near a hot surface on the engine or around exhaust components, potentially causing ignition and an underhood fire, increasing the risk of injury. To resolve the issue, dealers will update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube for free. CARS.COM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
