VIDEOS: First responders work to contain High Fence Wildfire in Trinity County PHOTOS: A fire broke out along Old Onalaska Road south of Groveton on Sept. 10. Labeled the High Fence Wildfire, it burned about 200 acres and was 70% contained as of 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Crews began responding to the fire at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday and were released at 1:40 p.m., according to the Groveton Volunteer Fire Department, before being called back out around 7:30 p.m. due to concerns that the fire might "jump over" to another wooded area. The Texas Forest Service and six local fire departments were on scene by 10 p.m., with five dozers working to create a containment line around the fire at 11:20 p.m. The flames were reported to be moving north towards FM 355. A representative for the Groveton VFD explained their strategy was to stop the "head" of the fire, which determines which way a wildfire may spread. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN Kilgore College Fire Academy unveils antique helmet collection at 9/11 ceremony VIDEO: Kilgore College held a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at their fire academy today. They chose this day to unveil a collection of antique firefighter helmets donated to the college that are now on display at the fire academy. A lot of things come to mind with the word collection, and firefighter helmets may not be top of the list, but for former firefighter Addy Hadaway it was a no-brainer. "I've always been interested in other fire departments, how they operate. And so, I started collecting the fire helmets when I was at the Kilgore Fire Department," Hadaway said. Director of the Kilgore College Fire Academy Johnny Zackary said the antique helmets come from around the world. "So, we have helmets from Scotland, Edinburgh, from World War II, Austria, Switzerland. Just a big variety of fire helmets including one from Kilgore Rescue, which Mr. Hadaway was part of," Zackary said. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Wolfforth Fire Department growing with city Over the next decade, Wolfforth's population is expected to double. In order to accommodate that growth, the fire department is expanding as well — becoming a fully paid department. Fire Chief Lance Barrett calls this a monumental move. "And, what that's going to allow is to do is just have a better response, a more-rounded response. We'll be able to do EMS calls as well as fire calls without having to depend on people so much coming from the volunteer side," Chief Barret said. "And also, we rely heavily on neighboring departments to supplement us with people. We'll still be needing them, but not to such a degree- and hopefully, we can help them out in turn by having that guaranteed staffing all the time. It's very, very unique and very, very good for the citizens and it's good for us as our community." KJTV FOX 34 LUBBOCK Restaurant fire in 30-story high-rise building in downtown Austin caused by oven ventilation system The Austin Fire Department says a restaurant fire in a 30-story high-rise building in downtown Austin Monday night was caused by the kitchen's oven ventilation system. AFD responded at around 7:04 p.m. to reports of a fire inside the restaurant at the Colorado Tower located at 303 Colorado Street. According to Google Maps, the restaurant located on the ground floor of the Colorado Tower is Red Ash Italia. Fire officials say the entire restaurant was evacuated. Firefighters worked long hours to bring the fire under control in the kitchen area and remove the smoke from the building. The fire was determined accidental and started in the restaurant's oven/ventilation system. No injuries were reported. The restaurant suffered extensive smoke damage, but very minimal smoke damage to the upper floors, the AFD Shift Commander said. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire department searching for person of interest in series of fires in California neighborhood VIDEO: Police are searching for a possible serial arsonist in Reseda after at least six fires were reported in the area overnight. Most of the fires took place around the Reseda Boulevard and Vanowen Street intersection. The first was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, and the rest happened within the following two hours. One of the fires involved a truck that was parked in the neighborhood. Firefighters were seen extinguishing the flames that engulfed piles of foliage in the truck bed. The vehicle sustained significant damage. Nobody was hurt in any of the fires. Investigators say the same person could be responsible for other fires over the past few days. The Los Angeles Fire Department on Tuesday provided a picture of a woman who they say is a person of interest in the fires. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Tiny, bug-like robot created by university engineers in Colorado has potential to aid first responders PHOTOS: A little bug-inspired robot created by a team of engineers at the University of Colorado Boulder has the potential to someday aid first responders during disasters. The robot's name is CLARI, which stands for Compliant Legged Articulated Robotic Insect. It was built in the image of a bug. It's tiny, squishable and can shape-shift to fit through different gaps. The robot can fit in the palm of a hand and weighs less than a ping-pong ball. "It has a modular design, which means it's very easy to customize and add more legs," doctoral student Heiko Kabutz said in a news release. "Eventually, we'd like to build an eight-legged, spider-style robot that could walk over a web." Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Kaushik Jayaram said CLARI is still in its early stages, depending on wires for its power supply and to receive basic commands. DAILY CAMERA - METERED SITE Foam 331: First Responder to the Nation's Worst Aviation Crisis PHOTOS: At 9:37 am Eastern Time on September 11, 2001, two fire captains—Michael Defina and John Durrer—from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Fire & Rescue Department, based at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, were standing on the departures level of the main terminal. They were responding to a minor vehicle accident, but their attention quickly turned toward a low rumble, followed by smoke rising to the northwest. Already alarmed by the reports of two airliners impacting the World Trade Center towers in New York City, both sprang into action. Defina jumped into his chief's wagon, while Durrer and three others jumped into Engine 335, a conventional pumper with rescue equipment. NATIONAL AIR & SPACE MUSEUM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
