Homes evacuated after stash of decaying fireworks, explosive material discovered in Montgomery County VIDEO: A shocking discovery was made in Montgomery County as a stash of decaying fireworks was found Tuesday. The stash was so dangerous that crews had no choice but to dispose of them by setting them on fire. According to the Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office, 50 to 70 pounds of old fireworks were discovered on an overgrown property in the Porter area. It was not clear how long the fireworks had been stashed there. Fire officials said it was serious enough for crews to evacuate neighbors from their homes as crews let the pyrotechnics burn themselves out overnight. This all started Tuesday afternoon when a man called the Porter Fire Department to say he had discovered a shed jam-packed with potentially explosive material in a wooded area off Ferne Drive. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Odessa Fire and Rescue honoring first year firefighters Tuesday several firefighters were honored for a major accomplishment at Odessa Fire and Rescue and you could feel the excitement in the room as they were recognized. Tuesday afternoon four Odessa Fire and Rescue firefighters were awarded their black shields to recognize they have officially completed one year with the department. "This is their one year fire fighter shield, so it really sets the foundation for what it is they want their career to look like here at Odessa Fire Rescue," said OFR Fire Chief John Alvarez. Those receiving the honor said they are extremely proud of all they have accomplished and have worked hard to be where they are now. "You just put a lot of work, a lot of training, a lot of time goes into it, and it's just rewarding to get that, that one year step," said Fireman and EMT Colton Garza. KMID-TV ABC 2 MIDLAND State environmental regulators will create rules for above-ground petroleum storage tanks VIDEO: It's an uphill battle. Senate Bill 900, passed and signed into law, requires the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to create safety standards for above-ground petroleum storage tanks. This law stemmed from a 2019 chemical fire in Deer Park, Texas. As the fire burned for days, schools shut down due to environmental concerns. People were told to stay home. The Texas attorney general sued the company responsible. Harris County got $900,000 after settlement. TCEQ's future standards will be used to register, license and regulate 36,000 tanks in Texas. SB 900, "requires TCEQ to create and enforce safety requirements to protect ground and surface water and mitigate potential safety hazards and minimize catastrophic incidents in the event of an accident or natural disaster..." KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Leander firefighter delivers stickers to kids on 3rd floor balcony VIDEO: Two children in Leander received an unexpected delivery to their family's third-floor balcony that they won't soon forget. The Leander Fire Department tweeted a video Tuesday afternoon from an apartment complex where firefighters had apparently been conducting training. The short clip shows a firefighter reaching out from an extended ladder atop a fire truck to hand something to two small children in a family member's arms. The department's post said, "While out on a training exercise, the Station 1 tiller crew (C shift) had an opportunity to hand out some stickers to 2 future firefighters!" KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Firefighters battle apartment fire in southwest Houston; no injuries reported Firefighters from the Houston Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Tuesday afternoon in southwest Houston. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Harris County Flood Control boat crashes into metal structure underwater in west Houston One person was flown to the hospital by LifeFlight, and three other people were being evaluated after a boating accident on Tuesday afternoon in west Houston. At about 2:30 p.m. Houston Fire Department received a water rescue call along the channel downstream from the Addicks Reservoir near Langham Creek. A Harris County Flood Control boat was performing routine vegetation maintenance at the bayou when it hit a metal structure that was underwater, according to the sheriff's office. New Jersey firefighter hospitalized after being grazed by stray bullet at firehouse VIDEO: A firefighter in Trenton, New Jersey was wounded by a stray bullet while working out at the firehouse on Tuesday night, officials said. It happened around 8:30 p.m. at Trenton Fire Company 1: Engine 1 on the 400 block of Calhoun Street. Two bullets pierced the back of the firehouse. Police say one bullet struck the firefighter who was in the weight room. A second bullet went through the wall and into the kitchen, but did not hit anyone. Authorities say the firefighter was taken to the hospital with a graze wound. "It's concerning because my firefighters actually have to go to calls with bulletproof vests on. Now to have to be concerned with them to be possibly shot at the firehouse -- this is one of those rare incidents that happen, but this is a major concern," said Ken Douglas, the director of the Trenton Fire Department. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA VIDEO: Fire destroys Michigan auto business PHOTOS: Nobody was injured but tools, vehicles, and personal mementos were destroyed when fire leveled a structure on Long Lake Road in Alpena Township around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters said they do not know what started the blaze that leveled the storage facility that was also home to the business RJ's Used Autos. Tammy Wirgau, owner of the home that shares the property, said the large building held vehicles, expensive tools, and at least one tractor, plus trophies and personal collections of mementos. She did not know how the fire started, and nobody was in the building at the time of the fire. The fire did not damage the house. Firefighters from multiple townships – including Alpena, Presque Isle, Maple Ridge, and East Grand Lake – and the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center responded and brought water to fight the blaze, with Alpena Fire Department paramedics on medical standby in case of injuries. THE ALPENA NEWS - METERED SITE Uncertain fate for Florida first responders ahead of special district dissolution Reedy Creek's Professional Firefighters Association president Jon Shirey said he hasn't heard much from the district's administration about what the future holds for Reedy Creek employees. "What's going to happen with their jobs as a whole? What's going to happen to benefits like retiree health care?" Shirey asked. He said hundreds of first responders will be impacted. "We basically cover about 210 first responders out of the total workforce of 370 Reedy Creek employees, so we're 58, 59 percent of the total workforce so it's a pretty big deal for us," Shirey said. Whether the district will be dissolving is still up in the air. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill dismantling it, but constitutional rights experts question if the state has violated Disney's first amendment rights. It's possible Disney could sue the state. In the meantime, the firefighters' association is stepping up to make sure their team is taken care of. WESH-TV NBC 2 ORLANDO Related: The Story of the Reedy Creek Improvement District After cardiac incident, Ohio firefighter warning other first responders to be health-minded A first responder in need of medical assistance himself is exactly what Parma Fire Capt. Ricky Fetter experienced last fall due to a dangerous and serious cardiac issue. "Last September, I noticed I was a little short of breath while we were conducting a cadet class at Tri-C," said Cincinnati native and Medina resident Fetter, 50, "I just chalked it up to being out of shape. The COVID restrictions hampered our ability to work out." When the same thing happened a few weeks later, Fetter again dismissed the symptoms. Then a few days later when he was out of breath walking up the many stairs from the fire station to city hall something happened that ended up saving his life. "The weird thing was my wife, who is a nurse, Facetimed me out of the blue," Fetter said. "She said, I looked gray, something was wrong and I needed to go to the doctor right now." CLEVELAND.COM Oldest active firefighter in South Carolina dies The Abbeville County Fire Department announced the passing of Mr. Hobart "Hobie" Erickson, the oldest active firefighter in the state of South Carolina. He was 95 years old. Erickson served as a first responder for over 65 years. His career started in 1965 in New Jersey. He later moved down south and joined the Donalds Fire Department more than 35 years ago where he once served as chief of the station. FOX Carolina had the chance to interview Erickson on his 95th birthday back in January of 2022. Outside of serving, Erickson told us he worked out for over an hour three times a week and worked at a golf course part-time. He joked and said he worked at the course to play free golf. "First of all, The Good Lord's watching over me. He has been good to me. I have a good wife. And I have a good fire department here. All these guys take care of me. They're always watching over me," Erickson said in January. "As long as I can keep going, I'm going to keep going." WIS-TV NBC/CW 10 COLUMBIA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
