Selden Volunteer Fire Department converts military vehicle into dual purpose truck Selden Volunteer Fire Department members turned a 2003 Stewart Stevenson truck into a firefighting machine to help protect their community and surrounding area. The fruit of their labor produced a brush truck with a slip-on unit that has a 2,000-gallon water tank and is capable of drafting from a pond, creek or pool. The truck was awarded through the Department of Defense Firefighter Property Program and the slip-on unit was purchased with a grant through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program both administered by Texas A&M Forest Service. "One of the stipulations for receiving this truck was to paint it a nonmilitary color so our volunteers painted it themselves and plumbed it, making it ready for response as a dual purpose apparatus," said Selden Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Shad Parum. "The primary mission of the truck will be for wildland firefighting but it can function as a tanker since it holds a large quantity of water." STEPHENVILLE EMPIRE-TRIBUNE 2 hospitalized after house fire on Southeast Side, San Antonio Fire Department says Two people are hospitalized after a house fire on the Southeast Side on Tuesday evening, the San Antonio Fire Department said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Copperas Cove firefighter funeral draws departments from across Central Texas Family, friends and fellow firefighters from across Central Texas gathered Tuesday morning to say farewell and honor the life of Copperas Cove firefighter Jose Negrete, who died last week of lymphoma, a type of cancer. Emergency personnel from jurisdictions including Killeen, Liberty Hill, Marble Falls, Kempner, Waco, Travis County and Copperas Cove crowded Holy Family Catholic Church for the service before leading a procession along Interstate 14 to Temple, where Negrete's body was to be cremated. Negrete, 30, served with the Copperas Cove Fire Department since May 2, 2016, and his death is termed a "line of duty illness," as firefighters are considered at risk for different types of cancer due to the smoke and hazardous chemicals they are exposed to while on duty. The Rev. Patrick Ebner, who led Tuesday's service, described Negrete as a "hometown son" of Copperas Cove who loved playing video games. KILLEEN DAILY HERALD 1 hospitalized with severe burns after Fort Worth home explosion An explosion at a house in Fort Worth sent one person to the hospital with serious burns. KDFW FOX 4 DALLAS Motorist parked vehicle in dry grass, igniting 9,500-acre wildfire in San Saba County Firefighters from across the state are battling the still-growing, human-caused Mays Fire in San Saba and McCulloch Counties that was ignited by a motorist. The fire ignited on Aug. 1, approximately 16 miles east of Brady, Texas, as the result of an individual parking and idling their vehicle over tall, dry grass, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. The fire has currently burned an estimated 9,500 acres and is only 50% contained. Over the past several days, significant wildfire activity has increased statewide, particularly in central portions of the state where rainfall has been minimal. Accelerated drying of vegetation has elevated the potential for new wildfire starts. According to Les Rogers, Texas A&M Forest Service Chief of Fire Operations, state wildland firefighters have been very busy responding to the increase in wildfire activity across the state. Massachusetts fire department institutes summer bicycle patrols This summer's pandemic-altered traffic configuration in downtown Hyannis has led the village Fire Department to adapt, too. And for now, at least, two wheels could be better than eight to ensure rapid emergency response in the downtown area. Last week, the department initiated bicycle patrols on Main, North and South streets and on Ocean Street near the harbor. Wearing bright, highly visible yellow shirts, the two-person team can respond to medical and other emergencies quicker and more nimbly, especially during peak periods and weekends. "There was always a thought of establishing one (a bike unit) for high-traffic areas of Hyannis, but COVID-19 really highlighted the need," Hyannis fire Capt. David Webb said. One lane on Main Street in Hyannis has been closed to traffic this summer to accommodate social distancing and provide additional space for restaurants and small businesses to offer services outside. CAPE COD TIMES Ohio firefighter receives headstone 150 years after death The first fallen Columbus Firefighter is finally receiving a headstone at his gravesite after 150 years. Mark B. "Mark Newman is a special guy," said Chris Klein, a Columbus firefighter. "He was one of the first paid firemen to work for the paid steam department." KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Alabama fire department debuts $65,000 airboat as river-based emergency calls increase The Elba Fire Department is now home to a $65,000 airboat. In December 2015, flood waters breached the dam and sent water rushing through the Pea River. Now, five years later, the river struggles to stay at 2.5 feet. This has led to people getting stuck and sometimes stranded while trying to enjoy a day on the water. But now, water-based rescue missions have gotten easier for the Elba Fire Department. "The only way we had to navigate the river was the same way that the folks using it for the recreation would be able to navigate it," said Elba Fire Department Chief Drew Parker. "That's either by jon boats, kayaks, or even inner tubes. Now that we have an airboat, we can navigate it somewhere between 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish."
