Family loses everything in northwest Houston apartment fire; one firefighter transported VIDEO: A two-alarm apartment fire left one firefighter in the hospital after battling the flames, according to the Houston Fire Department. The fire happened around 2 a.m. at the Kingswood Village Apartments on Mangum Road near the Northwest Freeway. Flames and smoke could be seen shooting from the roof when crews arrived. A total of five units were damaged in the incident, but thankfully none of the victims were injured. A Houston firefighter was taken to the hospital due to dehydration. Officials have not updated that person's condition. One family also said they lost everything in the flames after running outside with just the clothes on their back. Tina Delarosa, her two adult children and her two grandchildren said they're just thankful to be safe this morning. "A neighbor came and knocked on our door and said we needed to get out," Delarosa said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Rockwall County Firefighter Who Died From Off-Duty Accident Helps Others as Organ Donor VIDEO: A firefighter in Rockwall County, who was also an organ donor, is being remembered for his commitment to service and passion to help others. Clifford Haney, 45, was taken off life support on Tuesday. He sustained major injuries after he fell while at his off-duty job as an HVAC tech last week. Over the weekend, Haney was declared dead but remained on a ventilator. "You know he was handsome, just professional, healthy, good man, you just wouldn't think that would happen to Clifford Haney," said Martin Ramirez, director of operations for Rockwall County EMS. "Clifford was just a humble servant, he served quietly and he was so grateful to do his job in Rockwall County." Friends, family and fellow first responders of Haney said their goodbyes to the well-known firefighter who was initially being treated at Texas Health Presbyterian in Plano. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Crews respond to multiple structure fires in Amarillo VIDEO: The Amarillo Fire Department responded to two structure fires that happened last night. According to the release, last night at around 11:50 p.m., The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a structure fire near S. Cleveland Street. Upon arrival, crews found fire showing from the rear corner of a small home. Firefighters pulled attack lines from the truck and were able to get the fire under control. The Fire Marshal's Office is still investigating. No injuries were reported. Crews later responded to another report of a structure fire at around 3:46 a.m. near SE 11th. Upon arrival, crews found a large shed on fire in the backyard, along with a fence and a power pole with multiple transformers attached. Firefighters used extreme caution and were able to put out the fire. Electrical service was affected from SE 3rd Street to I-40. No injuries were reported. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO City of Mission to build new fire station The city of Mission is taking steps to make sure residents there are staying safe as the city continues to grow. The city is building a new fire station and is estimated to be ready by next April. This will be Mission's sixth fire station. The area has currently been seeing a lot of residential growth and that means firefighters and police will be needing to respond to more incidents. The idea is to hopefully provide a faster response time by being in the area already. "By doing this it will reduce the time for that area," Mission Fire Department Chief Gilbert Sanchez said. "Currently depending on time of day it may take four to seven minutes." More stations, more more job opportunities ahead. The city is discussing ways to get more man power to help man this particular station. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO Hays County fire department needs more hoses due to damage by wildfires VIDEO: It's been a busy wildfire season in Central Texas, and that's left fire departments with damaged equipment. "We've had a lot more fires than we typically do, and because of that we've seen our equipment take a lot more of a toll," South Hays Deputy Chief Dan Kramer said. Everything from hoses to brush trucks are out of service. It's all because of the types of fires they're dealing with. "Especially with wildland fire fighting when those conditions change, they change dramatically quickly," Kramer said. Kramer said it'll cost $4,000 to replace hoses lost over this fire season as well as a new brush truck. It's an issue Hays County commissioners are scheduled to discuss at their meeting Tuesday. "The replacement of those hoses is something that has reached a really critical factor for us," Hays County Commissioner Walt Smith said. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN 20,000 bales of hay burn in Rising Star barn fire VIDEO: 20,000 bales of hay burned during a barn fire in Rising Star overnight. The hay bales caught fire inside a barn off County Road 170 sometime before 10:00 p.m. Tuesday. Rising Star Fire Department officials responded to the fire, with help from the Eastland, Cisco, and Carbon fire departments. It's currently unknown exactly what caused the fire or for how long it burned. No injuries have been reported in connection to the fire at this time. Thankfully, this fire was contained to the barn, but earlier this year Rising Star and the other Eastland County departments battled a devastating wildfire that began on St. Patrick's Day and continued for more than a week, becoming a complex of fires that burned tens of thousands of acres and destroyed numerous homes and other structures in the Carbon and Gorman communities. VIDEO: Medical examiner called to I-79 truck fire in West Virginia A huge blaze and massive amounts of smoke were seen at a vehicle fire on I-79 southbound in Marion County. According to Marion County 911, the call of a vehicle fire was made at 4:24 on Tuesday afternoon. A video sent by 12 News viewer Chad Nuzum shows what appears to be a box truck still smoking with multiple crews on the scene. Several fire departments including Marion County, Bridgeport and Boothsville as well as White Hall Police, West Virginia State Police, Division of Highways and a medical examiner were called the scene. The fire took place amid the construction on I-79, between exits 132 and 133. Both lanes of the I-79 southbound are closed and drivers are being re-routed onto Pleasant Valley Rd, according to a reporter on scene, and northbound traffic is now moving. WBOY-TV NBC 12 CLARKSBURG 'It's just legacy:' Florida firefighter's widow helps find hope through new role VIDEO: Inside a locker at Fire Station 3, Brian McCluney's clothes are exactly as he left them. It's been three years since he worked here, but signs of him are everywhere. "That is his helmet shield, the emblem that was on the front of his helmet," Stephanie McCluney, his widow, said pointing to a fire truck. "Just his name and the symbol, it's just legacy, really, honor." Brian McCluney and his friend Justin Walker, a Virginia firefighter, vanished while boating off the coast of Port Canaveral. "It was a fishing trip to kind of remember Brian's father who he had suddenly lost a few weeks before, and just to make sure the boat was working properly," Stephanie McCluney said. "These two men had been on that boat dozens of times before. We grew up on those waters. It was just another day until it wasn't." FIRST COAST NEWS How a 2003 house fire shaped a Missouri fire department's training and gear VIDEO: Dennis Jenkerson remembers the moment he thought he was going to lose two firefighters like it happened an hour ago. "When I say trapped, I mean they had nowhere to go," Jenkerson said. "They were hanging out the window and the fire was blowing out the window above them." That was 19 years ago. Jenkerson is now St. Louis Fire Chief Jenkerson. And those two firefighters are now Captain Mario Montero and Captain Steve Fritsch. The men jumped out of the third-story window to survive – Jenkerson broke Fritsch's fall. "It was a very, very close call," Jenkerson said, tears welling in his eyes. "It was a very tough day." The three-story home where it all happened in the 4100 block of Penrose Avenue is now gone. But the memories and the lessons for all of the men involved remain – and are now part of the uniform for all of St. Louis's firefighters. KSDK-TV NBC 5 ST. LOUIS Maine firefighters use duct tape to help put out a fire at a metallurgy company Firefighters battled a smoldering fire for nearly five hours at Elmet Technologies at 1560 Lisbon St. Monday afternoon before employing a duct-taped pole to reach burning material in a duct and extinguish it. At 4:19 p.m., the department responded to reports of heavy smoke blowing out from a duct near the top of the building. Firefighters identified a burning buildup of tungsten oxide power within a T-section of external duct work as the source, said Paul Ouellette, fire investigator for the Lewiston Fire Department. The area could not be directly accessed because it was blocked by a hydrogen gas furnace. Ladder 1 was deployed and firefighters used a 4-foot shovel with a hook duct taped to a pike pole to reach into the duct and pull the smoldering debris out and onto the ground below, where it was extinguished.
