Community mourns fallen Austin firefighter PHOTOS: A fallen firefighter and EMT of Jollyville Fire Department (JFD) in Austin was honored with a motorcade on Aug. 17. A resident of Kyle, Dylan Rodiek, 34, joined JFD in March 2021. He was a recent graduate of Texas Fire Academy. On Aug. 16, Rodiek was on duty and failed to respond to a medical call. Fellow firefighters later found Rodiek deceased in his bunk room upon returning to the fire station from a possible cardiac arrest. Family and friends of Rodiek were escorted by Kyle Police Department and tearfully gathered on the Center Street overpass to see the motorcade. The motorcade was traveling from Georgetown to Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos to conduct a Wall of Honor. In a Facebook post regarding Rodiek's death, Austin Fire Department said that "Sadness is heavy in our department and many others across the region this afternoon…Dylan was always an enthusiastic employee who enjoyed serving the community." HAYS FREE PRESS Woman critically injured in massive San Antonio house fire VIDEO: Firefighters rescued a woman from a massive fire overnight at a home on the northeast side. That woman is in the hospital now with serious injuries, officials said. The woman's husband, Victor Aguilar, was also hurt. He was treated at the scene, located in the 12000 block of La Lira Street, for his injuries. Aguilar, who lived in the home, says there were seven people and four dogs inside the home when the fire broke out early this morning. He said his wife suffered from smoke inhalation. "I ran to my bedroom and closed the door to try to get my wife out. She has a prosthetic leg, but I couldn't get her out the window," Aguilar said. "EMS came and helped her get out, so she's critical condition in BAMC right now. So let's keep her in prayer... Her hand was on the window and I jumped out to try to stand and get her, when I came back I saw her hand go down. She was lying by the window. I couldn't get in there. I've never felt so helpless in my life." KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Woman dead, man hospitalized in Waco structure fire A woman is dead and a man is hospitalized in a Waco structure fire. The Waco Fire Department received a call at 4:57 p.m. Tuesday regarding a fire in the 5700 block of Lakemont Drive, with a person trapped inside. The Waco Police Department and EMS also responded. KLST-TV CBS 8 SAN ANGELO Possible pay increase for San Angelo personnel City personnel may soon get a pay raise after City Council met and agreed on a five-percent increase across the board. All that's left is approval. City personnel, especially first responders like firefighters and police, make considerably less in San Angelo than comparable cities which causes issues for recruitment and employee retention. San Angelo Police Sergeant Jeremy Cannady said, "I'm a Sergeant with the Police Department and I can go to Abilene as a lateral transfer, and go back to patrol as a normal officer and get a pay raise from what I make with the City of San Angelo." The Council's discussion was targeted on how to increase pay to city personnel, while not increasing property taxes. KLST-TV CBS 8 SAN ANGELO Follow Up: Longview Fire Department Releases Dramatic Video Of Awning Collapse VIDEO: You already know that firefighters are heroes whose duty calls for them to run into a dangerous situation, putting their lives on the line to save our lives and our property. A scary and dramatic video was released this week by the Longview Fire Department showing how perilous this line of work is. The Longview Fire Department responded to the 300 block of North High Street for a reported commercial building fire back on August 7th. Upon their arrival, they found heavy fire conditions coming from Nicholson Paint Supply at 303 N. High St. and went to work combatting the fire. KNUE-FM 101.5 TYLER Rockdale firefighters struggle with finding resources as medical calls rise The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department has lately seen an increase in medical-related calls. This development, compounded by the lack of hospitals and urgent care in the nearby area, has caused an increased response time and transport time for patients. In recent months, Rockdale firefighters responded to a major highway accident, at a time which all three of the city's ambulances were tied up with other calls. Volunteer fire chief Herbert Vaughn remembers that day vividly. "We've got children laying on the side of the road and all of our ambulances are gone," he recalled. "So we're depending on volunteer and backup units from the AMR system out of Waco, Temple, and Travis County. And that's a long way." The fire department has struggled desperately since Milam County's only two hospitals closed in 2018. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Investigators work to determine cause of blaze at Georgia recycling plant VIDEO: Firefighters spent Tuesday afternoon battling a massive blaze at a Lithonia-area recycling facility. It happed at the Encore Recycling center located in the 6700 block of Chapman Road. Before arriving, firefighters said they spotted a large column of smoke. They found a large pile of cars on fire after arriving at the plant. The thick black smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles. Firefighters worked to battle the fire from overhead, dumping water over the cars and scrap metals at the facility's yard. Other fire departments contributed resources and helped shuttle water from an off-site hydrant. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. This is the second fire to happen at a scrapyard in metro Atlanta. DEADLINE Related: 8 Surprising Facts About The World Trade Center's Construction In early 1962, when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officially authorized a plan to build the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, it came just months after President John F. Kennedy announced the U.S. goal of sending astronauts to the moon. The vision for the seven-building complex—which would cost an estimated $470 million (more than $4 billion in today's dollars) and include the two tallest buildings in the world—embodied that same brand of American optimism and ambition. The twin 110-story towers at the heart of the World Trade Center were designed to surpass New York's iconic Empire State Building—then the world's tallest building. Building the new towers would marshal unprecedented levels of design innovation, engineering prowess—and breathtaking risk. THE HISTORY CHANNEL Multiple fire fatality tragedy at child care home changed Pennsylvania law; some say more must be done Two years ago, the city of Erie was devastated after an overnight fire claimed the lives of five children at a family child care home. The tragedy on Aug. 11, 2019, has not been forgotten. For those who witnessed the scene at the Harris Family Day Care, the horror of seeing a parent's worst nightmare come true remains etched in their minds. All of the victims were under 9 years old: La'Myhia Jones, 8; Luther Jones Jr., 6; Ava Jones, 4; and Jaydan Augustyniak, 9 months, all siblings, and 2-year-old Dalvin Pacley. Three victims were the children of a volunteer firefighter who was responding to another blaze at the time of the fire. The fire served as a wake-up call to many. It changed the rules for child care facilities across Pennsylvania. Under a new state law, child care operators must meet more stringent fire safety requirements to operate. WITF-FM 89.5 HARRISBURG US Probing Autopilot Problems On 765,000 Tesla Vehicles After A Series Of Emergency Vehicle Collisions The U.S. government has opened a formal investigation into Tesla's Autopilot partially automated driving system after a series of collisions with parked emergency vehicles. The investigation covers 765,000 vehicles, almost everything that Tesla has sold in the U.S. since the start of the 2014 model year. Of the crashes identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of the probe, 17 people were injured and one was killed. NHTSA says it has identified 11 crashes since 2018 in which Teslas on Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control have hit vehicles at scenes where first responders have used flashing lights, flares, an illuminated arrow board or cones warning of hazards. The agency announced the action Monday in a posting on its website. WWJ-TV CBS 62 DETROIT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
