Victoria Fire Department Chief Robert Fox to retire in September The Victoria Fire Department has announced the official retirement of Fire Chief Robert Fox. Fox started his employment with the Victoria Department on June 4, 1996 and became fire Chief on July 1, 2018. Fox is now set to retire at the end of September. Fire Chief Fox provided the following message to his coworkers and the public regarding his retirement: "All: It is with a full heart and a bittersweet tear; I share with you my plan to retire at the end of September. Working alongside each and everyone of you has been the greatest professional honor of my life. I am immensely proud of all the outstanding work we have accomplished over the past few years. Words cannot express the gratitude and love I have for all of you. Even though the pages haven't been written, I am looking forward to the new chapter in my life..." CROSSROADS TODAY McLennan County fire departments respond to grass fire threatening homes VIDEO: Multiple fire departments from northern McLennan County were called to a grass fire in the 5200 block of Gholson Road on Aug. 22. A deputy chief with Waco Fire Department said the fire jumped Gholson Road at some point and was posing a threat to many homes in the area. Fortunately, first responders were able to protect the structures. Calls for the blaze came in around 6:55 p.m. According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the fire is around 10 acres large. It was 50 percent contained as of Tuesday at 10 p.m. Wildfires can often be sparked by dragging tow chains from boats, trailers and RV's as well as underinflated tires. While dragging tow chains isn't quite as easy to see, other wildfires can be caused by simple actions that can result in tragedy. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Grayson County officials approve separate fire marshal office Grayson County appointed its first fire marshal in 2012. Since then, the fire marshal's office has been under the authority of the sheriff's office. "One thing the fire marshal does is, he works very closely with the volunteer fire departments, which is a lot," said Chief Deputy Tony Bennie. "Our fire marshal is the one that does arson investigation; the sheriff's office doesn't have an arson investigator." Bennie noted that Grayson County is the only county in Texas to have the fire marshal under the sheriff's office. So 11 years later, the fire marshal's office will now be separated from the sheriff's office. "We're still going to be working together," said Fire Marshal John Weda. "It's just coming more in compliance with state standards." This change means Grayson County will now conform with the local government code. KTEN-TV NBC/CW+/ABC 10 ADA Texas A&M Fire Service: Rocky J Fire in Coryell County 75% contained VIDEO: Texas A&M Fire Service is still fighting the Rocky J fire, which is 138 acres and 75% contained. The fire began around 3:30 p.m. Aug. 22 in the area of Hard Bargain, CR147, 146, 145, 132 and 62 in Gatesville. According to the A&M Fire Service, activity increased on the east side of the fire in the afternoon due to increased wind speeds, leading to the fire breaking containment. "Crews are fighting the fire from the ground and air. Please avoid any unnecessary travel in that area and along 116. Allow responders room to move and work. Fire can be unpredictable, especially with today's winds, so remain alert," said the agency. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Massive fire destroys old factory in Michigan, four firefighters injured PHOTOS: Several firefighters were injured Tuesday afternoon when a fire destroyed a large vacant factory near the Jackson County Fairgrounds. Fire crews responded at about noon Aug. 22, to the commercial building near the intersection of W. North and Hamilton streets, north of the Armory Arts complex, in the city of Jackson. Heavy flames were coming from the building upon their arrival, City of Jackson Spokesman Aaron Dimick said. Given the size and location of the fire, an all-call alarm was sent out countywide for additional assistance, resulting in crews from every fire station in Jackson County arriving a the scene, as well as one crew from the Chelsea Area Fire Authority in Washtenaw County, Dimick said. Viewing the damage from the street, the roof of the building caved in and a large portion of a brick wall collapsed and crumbled onto North Street. MLIVE 911 AI operator in South Carolina weeds out non-emergency calls to free up first responders Understaffed 911 call centers across the country field non-emergency calls about stray animals or noise complaints on top of their workload of answering serious reports of medical emergencies, crimes and even death. Officials in Charleston County, South Carolina, however, are now leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline non-emergency calls in an effort to free up 911 operators to focus on getting first responders to the scene of emergency incidents as quickly as possible. "Our job is to serve the public the best way we can. So, I am not in any way demeaning anyone from the public, but someone who has their favorite cat stuck in a tree, that's an emergency for them as compared to someone's just been shot," Jim Lake, director of the Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center, told FOX News Digital. FOX NEWS Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut celebrating firefighting boat's 85th birthday VIDEO: It was once the most powerful fireboat in the world, but while it's since been retired from service, the Mystic Seaport Museum is planning a birthday bash to celebrate its legacy. The Fire Fighter, also known as America's fireboat, was used by the New York City firefighters for 72 years. It also supplied water from New York Harbor during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, pumping for 80 hours straight. "It served the FDNY in New York City for 72 years," said Charlie Ritchie, the president of the Fireboat Fire Fighter Museum. "For about 65 of those years of that time it was the most powerful fireboat in the world and the largest one ever built." In World War II, it helped extinguish a fire on a secret cargo ship filled with munitions. "If the ship had exploded, it would have leveled everything within five miles," Ritchie said. WTNH-TV ABC 8 NEW HAVEN Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Georgia unveils nation's first on-site EMS center VIDEO: Medical emergencies can happen anytime, including while you're traveling through the world's busiest airport. Now Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is better prepared for the unexpected. Atlanta cut the ribbon on the nation's first on-site airport triage center. It'a essentially an entire health clinic, right in the heart of the airport. "In addition to providing low-acuity medical support, the center can do high-level diagnosis using point-of-care blood testing, ultrasounds and cardiac monitoring," Fire Chief Rod Smith said. Airport officials say they transport around 2,000 people to emergency rooms each year. The center could help reduce that number while still providing adequate medical care.
