Four dead in McLennan County mobile home fire, identities confirmed by family At least 4 people have died in an early morning mobile home fire in the 800 block of Old Mexia Road. The Tello family lived in a mobile home on the property, until an early morning fire call brought sheriff's deputies around 3AM. The family has confirmed the identities of those who died in the fire as 16-year-old Noemi Tello-Villa, 19-year-old Yoagsana Tello, 39-year-old Angelina Villa and 48-year-old Sotero Tello. Two surviving members of this family mourn their loss as loving relatives try to comfort them. The call to authorities originally came in as a possible grass fire, but deputies quickly realized they had a home on fire, and very likely a family inside. McNamara called the scene "tragic" as he said his officers may have to have the scene closed off for as many as two days or more to complete their investigation. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Lightning strike blamed for Canyon Lake house fire Lightning strikes associated with passing thunderstorms were reportedly to blame for a blaze that scorched a Canyon Lake home Saturday morning. Canyon Lake Fire and EMS Chief Darren Brinkkoeter said crews were called to the fire at the corner of Tommy Drive and Amanda at 8:14 a.m. and arrived at 8:21 a.m. Luckily, there were no injuries sustained by any parties involved. "The occupant was able to get out," Brinkkoeter said. "We had heavy fire throughout the house." Brinkkoeter said it looks as though lightning was the culprit and that extensive damage was done to the structure. "That's what it appears to be to be right now, and the fire marshal has concurred in his preliminary investigation thus far," Brinkkoeter said. NEW BRAUNFELS HERALD-ZEITUNG Wilson County firefighters stay busy in scorching heat Wilson County is under a burn ban, but firefighters are staying busy. Floresville Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) received a report around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 18 of a grass fire across from the Shannon Ridge subdivision near Floresville. District 2 Emergency Services was en route to assist, when crews discovered several grass fires on the southbound side of U.S. 181, said District 2 Chief Adam Marconi. They stopped to extinguish those fires before continuing on to assist Floresville. Floresville and District 2, along with District 1 Fire & Rescue, Bexar County Emergency Services District (ESD) 10, and Bexar County ESD 12 worked in the triple-digit heat to extinguish multiple blazes — some threatening structures — along a stretch of southbound U.S. 181 from the Abrego Lake subdivision to Bentwood. WILSON COUNTY NEWS Volunteers, First Responders Report to the Texas Coast With a few more hours left to prepare for Hurricane Laura, now expected to make landfall as a category three hurricane, North Texas first responders are arriving along the coast to assist local emergency crews. Firefighter-paramedic Colby Oberle arrived in Beaumont Tuesday morning. Oberle is part of a six-person crew from Plano Fire-Rescue and the Frisco Fire Department who drove down in Frisco's AMBUS, a large ambulance equipped to care for as many as 18 patients. Oberle expects to help with evacuations at assisted living facilities with additional precautions because of the pandemic. "It's just one more step that we have to take to protect ourselves and the patients that we're treating," said Oberle. "We're still going to wear all the proper PPE with our gowns and masks and face shields." KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Going to Great Heights: Brownsville Firefighters Visit Fellow Firefighters Battling Virus Brownsville's firefighters have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis from the beginning. First responders have handled the brunt of virus-related emergency calls on top of regular duties for months, interacting with the public on a daily basis despite the risks. And so on Tuesday afternoon, a group of Brownsville firefighters took a much-deserved break to pay a visit to one of their own, David Guerrero, who is fighting for his health at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. Two fire engines parked at the hospital's main entrance just before a thunderstorm rolled into town just past 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Captain Eugenio Cardenas said the team organized the visit the same day after learning of an assistant chief's hospitalization. "There's no way to really go see him. We're going to go put a poster on his window — hopefully it will motivate him and hopefully he gets better. We want him back on our shift as soon as possible" said Cardenas. BROWNSVILLE HERALD Smith County residents should ‘use extreme caution' when burning right now, fire marshal says Smith County has been lacking significant rain over the past several weeks and Fire Marshal Jay Brooks said Tuesday that residents need to "use extreme caution" when trying to burn right now. Marshals use a scale known as the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) to measure the level of moisture in the soil and to use it as a guide when to issue a burn ban. The scale runs from 0-800, with 0 being extremely wet soil while 800 means that it is very barren. Brooks said that Smith County over the past week has seen measurements between 585-714 over the past week, with an average around 651. He then stated that a burn ban is typically issued when the average reaches 700. At a Smith County Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday, Brooks said that he is "praying for rain" from either Marco or Laura. KETK-TV NBC 56 TYLER/LONGVIEW PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters Battle Hours-Long Fire at Historic Downtown Minnesota Building VIDEO: No one was injured fighting an inferno Tuesday that collapsed the roof of the Moose Event Center on Howard Street in Hibbing, according to fire officials. But what does hurt to the small town, is the loss of a building that houses many businesses and memories. "As I stood outside and watched it just kept, no matter how much water it got worse, and worse, and worse," said Marybeth Perreira, who watched from the Androy Hotel across the street. Around 10:30 Tuesday morning smoke swallowed the Moose Lodge 1510 and Event Center. "Approximately 30 minutes after arrival we had a full roof collapse on the structure," Hibbing Fire Chief Erik Jankila said. "We made a tactical decision to go defensive early on in the fire. It wasn't worth risking somebody's life to put them into a building that's partially collapsed," he said. The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation. KQDS-TV FOX 21 DULUTH Union: Hawaii firefighters forced to prove they contracted COVID-19 on the job to get benefits The majority of calls Honolulu firefighters respond to are medical ones, and many are suspected COVID-19 cases. But the head of their union said the Honolulu Fire Department is making those sickened or quarantined prove they were exposed on the job. If they can't, the union said, they could be denied benefits. "Our firefighters are on their own with workers' comp.," Bobby Lee, Hawaii Fire Fighters Association president, told Hawaii News Now. "If they get COVID, they file a claim and they're subject to the determination of workers' comp whether it was job related or not." Determining the source of exposure can be difficult because firefighters can work coronavirus calls multiple times a week and not fall ill until days later. "It's next to impossible to try to prove where you got it from and firefighters don't have the luxury of saying ‘no i don't want to respond,‘" Lee said. Outbreaks at fire stations around Oahu also forced many into quarantine or isolation. HAWAII NEWS NOW Massachusetts farm pays tribute to first responders with corn maze design PHOTO: A farm in Massachusetts is paying tribute to the first responders who sacrificed their own safety to help others during the coronavirus pandemic. This year's corn maze design at Schartner Farm in Bolton serves as a thank you to first responders. Along with the words "Thank You," the maze features the Star of Life, which represents emergency medical services personnel; a police badge; a firefighter crest and the caduceus, also known as the Staff of Hermes, which is often used as a symbol of medicine. With the maze theme, the farm is also offering all first responders a free pass for the maze. Schartner Farm plans to open the maze Sept. 19 and keep it open through the end of October. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON From ‘happy hypoxia' to purpuric rashes — here are all the perilous ways the coronavirus attacks the body It's been almost eight months since Chinese scientists identified the coronavirus and doctors are still discovering new symptoms that can ravage the body and leave lasting damage months after recovery. While more than 813,000 people have died from the disease, most of the more than 23.6 million people with confirmed infections have recovered. But it hasn't affected all of them the same. Once thought of as just a respiratory illness, COVID-19 is marked as much by the variety of potentially perilous ways it harms the body as it is for the signature pneumonia it often causes, alarming doctors and public health officials. Because the coronavirus attacks a variety of cells in the body, there isn't one thing that connects every symptom or one treatment that seems to help every case.
