Former Corpus Christi Fire Chief Robert Rocha recognized for his years of service VIDEO: The City of Corpus Christi presented a special honor to former fire Chief Robert Rocha. As KRIS 6 News has reported, Rocha retired earlier this month after serving the Corpus Christi Fire Department since 2011. During Tuesday's city council meeting, Rocha was presented with a plaque and certificate from the city thanking him for his unforgettable leadership. Rocha was humbled by the recognition and had a piece of advice to share for the rest of the fire department. "Remember, every citizen in the city of Corpus Christi needs to be treated with dignity and respect," Rocha said. As the city said farewell to Rocha, the community also welcomed the person taking over. City manager Peter Zanoni appointed Richie Quintero to serve as the interim chief of the Corpus Christi Fire Department. KRIS-TV NBC/CW+ 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Two injured in house fire in northwest Austin PHOTO: Two people are hospitalized after a fire in Northwest Austin overnight. The fire was through the roof when firefighters arrived at the home in the 3900 block of Hawkshead Drive around 12:45 a.m. When firefighters put out the fire, they found a dog that was deceased. Firefighters say the fire started around the fireplace that was being used to heat the home. The two people who were taken to the hospital are believed to have non-life threatening injuries. KTBC FOX 7 AUSTIN Copperas Cove Police, Fire vehicles involved in collision Several collisions on icy roads have already occurred throughout Central Texas – including one involving Copperas Cove Police and Fire units. The Police Department said that one of its vehicles and one fire unit were struck on Monday while both were assisting a vehicle involved in a collision. This occurred on Highway 9 – as it meets Business 190 on the east side of town. No first responders were injured, but the Police Department says a few people were taken to the hospital to be evaluated due to this incident. The Police Department also enforced the reminder that if you do not have to travel, please consider staying home. KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO House destroyed in fire sparked by space heater on Houston's southside, firefighters say A house was destroyed by a fire sparked by a space heater on Houston's southside early Wednesday morning, according to firefighters. A woman was sleeping on the couch at her home on Kassarine Pass near the South Loop when the flames woke her up shortly before 3 a.m., Houston fire officials said. Thankfully, the woman was able to safely get out of the home. She told firefighters her space heater caught the couch on fire. The woman was not injured, according to HFD. Firefighters believe the home is a total loss. As cold weather lingers, remember to keep heating equipment -- including space heaters and fireplaces -- at least three feet away from anything flammable. Firefighters specifically advise keeping space heaters away from furniture, drapes and electronics. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Killeen Fire breaks down winter weather response First responders across Central Texas are seeing a spike in calls due to icy conditions. Since 7 a.m. Tuesday, Killeen Fire Department responded to almost 100 calls. Killeen Fire Chief James Kubinski said the two most frequent calls for service are car crashes and falls on the ice. To put that into perspective, in a typical 24 hour shift, the department gets around 75 calls. 6 News got to ride along with Killeen Fire Battalion Chief Phillip Bannister Tuesday evening as he responded to stalled vehicles, crashes and monitored the roads. "This is not typical of what our fire department would usually respond to," he said about the icy conditions. "This is usually a once or twice a year kind of event for us." 6 News was able to see how frequent the calls were Tuesday evening. Bannister said there is a lot of planning, extra staffing and communication that goes into the operation of keeping citizens safe. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE College Station: Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service aims to make disaster training almost like the real thing When a small farm warehouse caught fire in West, Texas, in 2013, members of a volunteer fire department rushed to the scene. Unknown to them, the store held more than 40 metric tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate fertilizer in wood storage bins, surrounded by seeds and other flammable farm supplies. As the fire grew, the firefighters sized up their options. Soon, the building exploded—flattening an apartment building, nursing home, three schools, and much of the small town. It also took the lives of 12 firefighters and three people living nearby. The emergency responders had just 20 min from when the fire was reported to when the blast occurred. The high cost in lives and property led the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) to conduct a lengthy investigation and issue several recommendations to avoid or limit the impact of such accidents in the future. But one recommendation was directed to the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). CHEMICAL & ENGINEERING NEWS - METERED SITE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Multiple cabins burn in Tennessee PHOTOS: Multiple cabins burned overnight in the Upper Middle Creek area of Sevier County, the Sevier County Government and the City of Pigeon Forge stated in a joint press release early Tuesday. Sevier County officials say at around 12:39 a.m., Sevier County Central Dispatch received a call reporting a structure fire in the 2100 block of Windy Lane in the Upper Middle Creek area of Sevier County. Crews with the Pigeon Forge Fire Department responded to the scene and found one cabin fully involved with a second cabin 50% involved. "The fire quickly spread to a nearby third cabin before crews were able to slow the advance of this intense fire," the Sevier County Government stated in its release. "Fire crews on scene encountered intense heat as multiple propane tanks vented which added fuel to the already strong fire." WATE-TV ABC 6 KNOXVILLE Massachusetts EMTs, firefighters get K9 lifesaving training under Nero's Law EMTs and firefighters are used to receiving the latest training when it comes to lifesaving care. But on Tuesday, they encountered a different kind of training and patients: High-tech K9 mannequins. Gillette Stadium's Putnam Club became a classroom of sorts for Bay State EMTs, where their patients for the lifesaving training weren't humans but man's best friend. Following the death of Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon and the subsequent injuries suffered by his K9 partner Nero, Nero's Law enables first responders to provide aid and transportation to injured police dogs. Easthampton police Sgt. Andrew Beaulie said it's comforting to know that his K9 partner, Gino, will be taken care of if something happens. "It's a peace of mind when we go out on those deployments that if something were to happen to him, he's going to be treated and transported like an officer would be," he said. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON Georgia fire explorers bring home award from national competition Explorer Post 469, a junior firefighter program of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services for high school students, has earned third place in a national competition, the fire department announced.
