Pflugerville students getting hands-on firefighter and EMT training VIDEO: Pflugerville ISD students are able to get hands-on training for EMT and fire thanks to a partnership with the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation and the Texas Workforce Commission. This program teaches Pflugerville ISD students more than just the basics of CPR. These kids are learning how to assist in a real-life emergency. Health science students at Henderickson High School walked FOX 7 Austin through one of their emergency response drills to show how the skills they learn in the classroom will help them be prepared for their EMT certification. "This lab is to let them learn all about the ambulance, what goes in it, how to get in and out of it. It's the silly things that make you feel very, not very confident when you go into these situations," says Shay Haude, Pflugerville ISD EMT instructor. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Follow up: Injured Houston firefighter discusses jumping from second floor during call VIDEO: Imagine trying to help someone when they have a medical emergency and realizing seconds later that that person is out to take your life. That was the reality for Houston firefighter Corey Grant less than two weeks ago. He's recovering from his injuries and sat down with FOX 26 exclusively to talk about that fateful day that he feared could have been his last. "There is still some bruising in this side of the area from when I fell and landed. I think this is the side that took the brunt of the impact," explained Houston firefighter Corey Grant. He sustained the injuries after jumping from a second story balcony stairwell onto the ground. The night was January 27, around 11p.m., Grant and Houston firefighter Andrew Hoegsberg responded to the call at a second floor apartment at the Ashford Buena Vista Apartments, off Bissonnet. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Nacogdoches Fire and Rescue to purchase new wildland fire engine After the city council's approval Tuesday night, Nacogdoches Fire and Rescue will receive a new wildland fire engine for their department. After a 30-year run, the department will retire one of its engines. "That was a refurbished unit that had been donated by the U.S. Forest Service," said Fire Chief Mike Brown. He explained to the council the new type-three engine would replace the older vehicle that has had much-needed maintenance and has made it challenging to find repairable parts. "We are struggling mildly with parts. We are one major component away from being sidelined," he said. According to Brown, the new engine's design has been approved and used nationwide to fight wildfires. Brown said it can carry up to five crew members and has a tank capacity of 500 gallons. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN Refugio junior firefighter nails a 'fire' prom proposal PHOTOS: Everybody loves a good promposal, but one junior firefighter really took it to the next level with the help of the Refugio Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD). When Refugio High School junior Zechariah "Zech" DeLeon isn't on the football field or in the classroom, he is working as an RVFD junior firefighter alongside his father, Martin DeLeon. Zech met his girlfriend, freshman Alexandra Andrade, at Refugio HS and they started dating a few months ago. They had added each other on Snapchat and were starting to talk when Alexandra asked him out to lunch. "We went to Whataburger and got some food, talked about some stuff," Zech said. "Then when we went back to school, I walked her to all of her classes." "I was so scared because I'm a shy person," Alexandra said. KRIS-TV NBC/CW+ 6 CORPUS CHRISTI PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

2 shooting victims seeking help crash into Alabama fire station; 1 dies at hospital Two shooting victims - a male and a female - were rushed to the hospital after they hit a Birmingham fire station while they were seeking help. One of the victims, the male, was pronounced a short time later at UAB Hospital. In what police called a "chaotic scene," the ordeal began about 6:40 p.m. when gunfire erupted at the Shell station on the corner of Old Springville Road and Brewster Road. Those inside the sedan fled the scene and were believed to have been seeking medical attention when they crashed into one of the bay doors at Station 30, which is about a half block away. The impact did not break down the door. Because it wasn't immediately clear what was taking place, an alert was issued indicating a potential threat or danger to a firefighter. AL.COM 75-year-old woman becomes volunteer firefighter in California VIDEO: The CAL FIRE Butte County volunteer program finished its last day of training for its latest group of volunteer firefighters. 19 new volunteer firefighters are expected to serve Butte County and 75-year-old Mary Jarschke is excited to be one of them. "I keep thinking 'man if I started when I was 30 I would be' excuse the expression but badass. I mean it's still pretty badass at 75 but, really I wish I had done it sooner," said Mary Jarscke. Jarschke is a retired registered nurse and Camp Fire survivor living in Concow. She says she joined the program to continue to give back to the community. "We do a lot of medical calls in Concow, the volunteers do, so I decided that this is something that I can do. I'm clearly not gonna be the one dragging somebody out of a burning building most likely." KHSL-TV CBS 12 CHICO Forest Service burn boss indicted for reckless burning in Oregon A Grant County grand jury has indicted U.S. Forest Service burn boss Ricky Snodgrass on a Class A misdemeanor count of reckless burning. Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley arrested Snodgrass on Oct. 19, 2022, while the fire he was supervising was still burning. It is believed to be the first time a Forest Service firefighter has been arrested in the course of doing their job. On that day, the Forest Service was conducting a prescribed burn just north of the Izee-Paulina Highway and west of Highway 395. Embers from the planned burn area blew across the Izee-Paulina Highway and charred about 20 acres of timbered ground belonging to an adjacent private ranch before the blaze could be put out. 'Silver Wave': How New Hampshire's aging population is straining its Seacoast Region fire departments New Hampshire's population is getting older, and the "Silver Wave" is having an impact on emergency services and town budgets. New Hampshire has the second oldest population in the nation, with a median age of 43 years old, according to World Population Review. Only neighboring Maine has an older population, and Florida, known for its retirement communities, is behind New Hampshire with a median age of 42. Maine and New Hampshire aren't unique in the Northeast. Every New England state is among the 15 oldest in the nation. But median age doesn't tell the whole story. According to estimates from the U.S. Census, in 2023, New Hampshire had about 1,395,000 people, with more than 20 percent over 65. SEACOAST ONLINE - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
