‘I will never forget': Dutch firefighter, Comanche VFD rescues prized calf from 40-foot well VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Comanche Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) had an unusual call out last Friday. These firefighters went on a call to rescue a prized breeding calf trapped at the bottom of a well, aged 100+ years. Friday, February 17 began as most Fridays do for Martijn Verschueren. He spent his day at work for Volleman's Milk in Gustine, and was headed out to dinner with a friend. That was until he got a message from the Comanche Volunteer Fire Chief. "It was quite an adventure that I will never forget," Verschueren said. "At the moment, it feels kind of unrealistic, like a dream." Verschueren was born in the Netherlands, but grew up in neighboring Belgium. He told KTAB/KRBC he spent his childhood days running around his grandfather's farmland. It instilled a love of agriculture, specifically working with cattle, in him at an early age. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Jim McCallie named Jasper Firefighter of the Year Jim McCallie has been named Jasper Firefighter of the year by his fire department colleagues. The honor came on Monday evening during the department's annual Banquet & Installation Ceremonies in the Jasper Fire Hall. Fire Chief Brandon Duckworth presented the plaque to McCallie and noted that the veteran firefighter is a former member of the Angelina River Fire Department who has been with Jasper since 2019. Duckworth presented the Chief's Award to Josh Myer, who joined the Jasper Fire Department in 2020. Also recognized were some longtime members of the department who received service pins for their years of service. They included Gary Lamoreaux for 45 years, Jimmy Dougharty for 40 years, Jimmy Primrose for 25 years, Jack Armstrong, Jr for 10 years, and receiving 5 year pins were Shane Whitmire and Eric Melendez. KJAS-FM 107.3 JASPER White Oak Fire Department gets new fire engine, celebrates with push-in ceremony VIDEO: Tuesday night White Oak celebrated receiving their new fire engine. The new engine took about a year and a half to be delivered since it was custom built. White Oak Fire Chief Cameron Kizzia says their previous main engine was aging out and parts were getting hard to find. The firefighters took part in a "push in" ceremony which pays respect to fire departments from a time before there were motorized vehicles. The chief says the ceremony has been around since the days of horse drawn fire apparatus. "It was difficult to back then because it was hard to control the horses. So, they would unhitch their horses, put them in their stalls and they would push the truck, or the apparatus, back in the stalls. So, when we got our first, started getting our first motorized fire apparatus, we kind of kept that tradition going by pushing a new truck into service," Kizzia said. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER City breaks ground on fourth new joint fire-EMS station in southeast Austin The city will break ground on the newest joint fire-EMS station as part of a bigger project to increase the emergency response times in areas around Austin that have expanded in recent years. The new station, located at 9400 Capitol View Dr., right near the Midnight Ranch neighborhood in southeast Austin, will be the fourth joint station built by the city in the past five years. The goal is to reduce response times in emergencies after it was discovered Austin did not have enough fire stations to accommodate the expanding areas of the city. The goal for the city's fire department is to respond to an emergency in under eight minutes at least 90% of the time. In 2018, the Austin fire department released a study detailing multiple areas the city was failing to respond in under eight minutes. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Laredo Firefighters take part in health and wellness fair VIDEO: The brave men and women of the Laredo Fire Department got a chance to see how they can take care of their own health. On Tuesday morning, the City of Laredo Human Resources Department set up several booths within the Laredo Fire Department Admin Building for a health and wellness fair specifically designed for firefighters. Firefighters rotated through each station and learned about, health, nutrition, covid, fitness and free services that are available to them. Zaida Gonzalez, the employee health and wellness manager for City of Laredo said they wanted to organize this event to take care of the employees who are responsible for serving our community. "The reason that we are doing this is so that they are aware of what they have, and that they know that all of these are free services that they can take advantage of and we want them to come to us so that they can create awareness," said Gonzalez. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC 8 LAREDO Bryan Fire Department announces winners of poster contest VIDEO: Several students from Johnson Elementary School have won first and second place in Bryan FD's fire prevention poster contest. Each year the department receives roughly 30 pieces of art, but this year, it had over a hundred submissions. "How we're gonna get out if there's a fire, how to recognize there's a fire in the house, and where we're gonna go if there's a fire," Gerald Burnett, the Assistant Fire Marshal said. Those are some things to keep in mind when planning your escape— the theme for this year's fire prevention poster contest. One young artist said she wanted to combine her love for animals with what she sees when she watches the news. "You always need to know how to get out if there's a fire in the house," 4th Grader Arielle Cooper said. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Flames engulf abandoned California warehouse VIDEOS: A fire Tuesday afternoon completely burned an abandoned warehouse to the ground. The Stockton Fire Department said the wind-driven fire was reported at 4:54 p.m. on Lindsay and Stockton streets. The fire went three-alarm, which means that a larger response of firefighters was required to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported. While officials have not yet released the cause of the fire, video obtained by KCRA 3 shows the building engulfed in flames. The bill was introduced by Delegate Burkhammer on January 11, 2023, and has been referred to the Committee on Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services and then Finance. The proposed legislation aims to recognize and appreciate the invaluable services that volunteer firefighters provide to the state. Volunteer firefighters often put their lives on the line to save others, and the least the state can do is make their lives easier. By exempting them from paying for vehicle registrations and license plates, the state could give back to the volunteers and help ease their financial burden. Additionally, the bill would encourage more people to join the firefighting services and help retain experienced volunteers by showing that their contributions are valued. ORIGINAL NEWSBREAK VIDEO: Maryland Fire Company's New Airboat To Make Rescue Response 3 Times Faster The Susquehanna Flats are unlike any other part of the Chesapeake Bay. But the Susquehanna Hose Company's new airboat changes all that. It can skim over any depth of water. Cheryl Costello got on board the unique rescue vessel that will make the upper Bay safer.
