Corpus Christi Fire Chief Robert Rocha, set to retire, talks about 11 years of service to community VIDEO: For the last 11 years, Robert Rocha has been the leader of the Corpus Christi Fire Department. At the end of this week, he is set to retire, leaving a legacy of commitment to the Corpus Christi community. The sound of sirens will no longer mean he has work to do, but the sound will always remind him of the men and women putting their lives on the line every day to help the community. "Whenever I hear the sirens, I always think about when I was a firefighter, fire captain, I think about the danger, but, I say a prayer that the firefighters will continue to do the great work that they do and they're always going to be close to my heart," Rocha said. Rocha spent 28 years in Kansas City, KS before coming to Corpus Christi- a move he said changed his life. "Coming down to Corpus Christi really was the icing on the cake for my career," Rocha said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Tyler fire marshal talks benefits of new PPE cleaning equipment VIDEO: Firefighters face danger every single day, but the number one danger comes as an unfortunate side effect of their work. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the number one killer of firefighters. Lung, esophageal and stomach cancers are the most common types of cancers among firefighters today. Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley says he has seen it affect our firefighter each year. "What has been found in recent studies is that not only can we be diagnosed with cancer that we've gotten as a result of breathing in toxins, also if it gets in our eyes and also absorption, just getting on the skin," Findley said. That is why the Tyler Fire Department has taken cancer-reduction initiatives like purchasing new hoods that prevent the absorption of toxins, self-contained breathing apparatus, and new engine bays to infiltrate the air. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER San Antonio Fire Department investigating fire at fourplex The San Antonio Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire at a fourplex on the North Side. The fire was reported at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of W. Lullwood Ave., near Hildebrand and Beacon avenues. When firefighters arrived, they said they saw flames coming from the backside of the structure. A woman was the only person inside the home at the time of the fire and she was able to leave on her own. The fire was mainly contained to the outside of the structure. The inside of the home had some smoke damage but did not have heat, fire or water damage. SAFD is working with the Red Cross to assist occupants in finding a place to stay. The number of occupants in the fourplex and the cost of damage were not available. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Sherman City Council OKs plans for fire station, city hall The Sherman City Council approved measures Tuesday to start planning construction projects for the central fire station and a new city hall. The central fire station needs a complete overhaul to add space to accommodate more firefighters and update its facilities. "As the city grows, the fire department needs to grow," said Interim Chief Billy Hartsfield. "We need to look at our facilities and figure out what's good for us today, what's good for us 10 years from now, 20, and even 50 years from now." Rather than construct an entirely new building, the fire station will be rebuilt at its current location. The fire department projects the construction will take around one year. The other major item the Council considered was the status of the city hall. The current city hall is a repurposed post office that was converted more than two decades ago. KTEN-TV NBC/CW+/ABC 10 ADA Fire knocked down at central Austin duplex due to fast response The Austin Fire Department says its fast response to a duplex fire in Central Austin Tuesday morning helped knock it down quickly. The call came in at around 7:45 a.m. at the house located at 1027 E. 45th Street and Clarkson Avenue. Firefighters arrived at the scene and found the fire on the balcony and worked quickly to knock it down. About 45 minutes earlier, AFD crews were at the scene of another structure fire off North Lamar Blvd. No civilians or firefighters were injured. Fire officials say the structure was saved, but multiple residents were still displaced due to smoke and heat damage. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Related: Austin firefighters respond to fire on deck of Shoal Creek Saloon Pflugerville firefighters gear up for fire danger amid warm, dry weather Gusty winds plus low humidity could result in critical fire danger for many across Central Texas. With a Fire Weather Watch in effect, firefighters with the Pflugerville Fire Department Emergency Services District 2 are keeping a close eye on conditions. Only three weeks into one of the warmest Januarys on record, assistant chief A.J. Stacer said he's seen an increased number of calls. "We've already had to staff additional trucks, multiple days in January for fire danger," he said. The fire danger is caused by the wind and low humidity levels drying out fire fuel — such as trees, grass and shrubs. Stacer said the winds have a major impact on how fast fires can spread. "What might have been a small fire on a day with 5 miles per hour wind, if you have 25 miles per hour wind, it can grow exponentially in just a few minutes," he said. WMBF-TV NBC 32 MYRTLE BEACH Fallen FDNY firefighter saves 5 lives, including 2 FDNY firefighters, through organ donation: 'His legacy' A New York City Fire Department firefighter who was fatally injured while prepping for a training exercise at work saved the lives of five others through organ donation, including two fellow FDNY firefighters. Veteran Firefighter William "Billy" Moon died after a 20-foot fall at his Brooklyn fire station on Dec. 12 left him with a severe head injury. Moon was an organ donor and his heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys went to five people. One of those people was retired FDNY Lt. Terrence Jordan, 64, who developed a 9/11-related illness after responding to the World Trade Center and needed new lungs, Long Island News 12 reported. Jordan had end-stage COPD and emphysema. "I was in such bad shape from one moment. And now I look at myself and it's like I have a new lease on life because of the Moon family," said Jordan, who might have died without the donation. FOX NEWS North Carolina first responders blazing new trail with fire engine party bus VIDEO/PHOTOS: Two local first responders are setting the downtown Asheville scene on ‘fire'. Technically retired, Tanker 364 is now blazing a new trail in western North Carolina. It's not your typical fire engine anymore. Tanker 364 has been transformed into the ‘Hot Zone Party Fire Engine' – the brainchild of Terry Whitaker and Dakota Andrews. "This is a C-8000 Ford tanker from Lattimore Fire Department," Whitaker said. "It cost us, I think it was about $5,000 for this truck, then we've got several thousand more invested in all the sound equipment and all the modifications." The pair didn't stray far from their first responder roots when searching for a side hustle; they're both firefighters. "It just gives us a chance to interact with the public in a completely different atmosphere," Andrews said. WLOS-TV ABC 13 ASHEVILLE ‘Kraken' COVID Variant, XBB.1.5 Climbing in Midwest, Experts Say More Cases Expected The new and highly contagious COVID variant dubbed XBB.1.5 roughly doubled its prevalence in the Midwest over the last week and experts say that growth will likely continue in the weeks ahead. The variant now makes up 43% of cases in the U.S. and more than 14% of cases in the Midwest, climbing in both metrics from 30.4% and roughly 7% the week prior, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The growth isn't unexpected as the omicron subvariant has been described as one of the most contagious variants of the pandemic so far. Experts in the Chicago area have been preparing for the variant to surge in the Midwest after the Northeast saw a rapid rise, with the variant now making up more than 80% of cases there. "I do expect that [XBB.1.5] will continue to increase here," Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said Tuesday. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
