Veteran Assistant Fire Chief Homer Robertson retires from Fort Worth Fire Department The Fort Worth Fire Department, with mixed emotions, announced the retirement of Executive Assistant Chief Homer Robertson, who has served Fort Worth for 37 years, having joined the department on July 22, 1985. His last day was July 1. Robertson is always leaning forward into future opportunities for the fire service while also preserving Fort Worth's past through his dedication to the preservation of the city's history and heritage. During his almost-four-decade-long career, Robertson was instrumental in developing many of the Fire Department's systems, processes and practices that are in place now. He was one of the original founding members and a squad leader of Texas Task Force-1. He published more than 90 articles concerning the fire service. CITY OF FORT WORTH Fireworks possibly to blame for two San Antonio house fires VIDEO: Fourth of July celebrations could be the reason why two homes burned overnight on the city's northwest side. Around 11:30 pm, the San Antonio Fire Department responded to two homes engulfed in heavy flames on Wildstone Place. SAFD Chief Charles Hood said fireworks were popping off in the area, and continuing to do so, as fire crews arrived. Initially, firefighters feared up to four houses on fire but were able to contain the flames to two. Hood said both homes suffered heavy damage from water and flames. No injuries were reported. Hood said fireworks may be to blame but said the cause remains under investigation. "We do have ring doorbell [video] from some of the residents with fireworks going off in the street prior to the call coming in," he said. KENS 5 was able to obtain cell phone video from a neighbor. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Austin-area firefighters work 133 fires in 24 hours Over 24 hours, local firefighters worked 133 various fires between noon on the Fourth of July and noon on Tuesday, the Austin Fire Department said. AFD said 90 of the blazes occurred within the span of four hours between 8 p.m. and midnight on July 4. Most were "presumably" related to fireworks. The fires ranged from grass and brush fires to trash fires, including at least 10 structure fires. AFD is still working to learn the causes of those building fires, but said there was mostly minor to no damage found. Austin Fire said some of the fires reached one to two acres in size. Firefighters from AFD and the 11 surrounding Travis County fire departments all worked to respond to the 133 blazes. Last year on the Fourth of July, three homes in the St. Johns area were damaged due to a fire caused by fireworks. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Baby, man killed after Tyler County mobile home fire A 15-month-old baby and a man are dead after a mobile home became engulfed in flames in Deep East Texas early Tuesday morning. According to the Tyler County Sheriff's Office, deputies and firefighters responded to a house fire on County Road 1400 in the Warren area around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies located a mobile home on fire. The sheriff's office said a woman with severe burns and a 3-year-old girl, who seemed to be uninjured, were outside of the home. Deputies then learned a man and 15-month-old were still inside the burning home; however, officials couldn't enter because of the extreme heat and flames. Local fire departments, including Woodville, Warren and Ivanhoe, were able to put out the flames. Deputies found the bodies of the man and baby, the sheriff's office reported. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO Structure fire near Florence fully contained, burned 600 acres A structure fire in Florence is now fully contained after multiple agencies responded. Around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Williamson County Emergency Communications was notified about a structure fire off Pecan Branch near Florence. That fire spread to roughly 600 acres, according to a Tuesday release. Later, at 6:45 p.m., Texas DPS communications was advised the fire had reached the fence line of the DPS training facility near Florence. No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is not known at this time. Several agencies responded, including fire departments from Florence, Jarrell, Georgetown, Round Rock, Salado, Bartlett, as well as the Texas Forest Service, DPS, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, EMS and emergency management. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Midland and Odessa Fire Departments experience high volume of calls this 4th of July weekend Fireworks were set off by residents throughout the 4th of July weekend, and first responders were ready to respond. We spoke to both the city of Midland and Odessa fire departments about this past weekend Both the city of Midland and Odessa fire departments this past weekend experienced high amounts of calls of fires due to fireworks being set off in city limits even with there being no tolerance for them. With fireworks comes fire and when fires are started, firefighters respond. We had 37 calls related directly to fireworks. We also had a large increase in the number of grass fires, dumpster fires, and trash and rubbish fires that we would suspect were related to fireworks. We did have one structure fire that was directly related to fireworks." Midland Fire Marshall, James Howard. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: 3 Firefighters injured while battling warehouse fire in Kentucky neighborhood Three firefighters were injured while battling a warehouse fire that took nearly 100 firefighters and more than 30 firefighting tools to control. According to Louisville Fire Department Maj. Bobby Cooper, one of the firefighters was injured after being shocked by a down power line. The firefighter was transported to the hospital and was conscious and alert, Cooper said. All three were taken to a local hospital for observation. No others were hurt. Cooper said the call initially came in around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on a reported structure fire in the 3000 block of River Park Drive. That's in Louisville's Russell neighborhood. Because the warehouse is just a few blocks away from a fire station, firefighters were able to get on scene within a minute, Cooper said. Once on scene, the 2-story vacant warehouse was already engulfed in flames. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE Long-time volunteer firefighter kidnapped in Alabama ‘a super, super woman' The victim of yesterday's Calhoun County kidnapping "could have been anyone," according to Sheriff Matthew Wade. Instead, it was a woman known to most area law enforcement and emergency workers for almost three decades as a steady, steadying presence at crime scenes and accident sites. "She's a super, super woman," said Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown about Betty Cobb, 75, who was found Monday, bound with duct tape in the closet of an Anniston home hours after she was snatched from her home on Choccolocco Road in rural Calhoun County. Wade said investigators believe Cobb was followed home, after an Independence Day shopping trip, by 47-year-old Tony Lamar White of Anniston, who is currently the subject of an intense manhunt. White, who has had previous arrests for domestic violence and third-degree robbery, faces charges of kidnapping and burglary. The incident happened at the intersection of Broad and Atlantic streets about 3 p.m. Officials said they received several 911 calls reporting the incident. Responding officials said a woman was trapped under the front axle of a tandem-style CT Transit bus. Crews said the woman was conscious, alert and able to talk to firefighters. In a video from the Stamford Fire Department, crews can be seen trying to get the woman out from under the bus. Firefighters were able to rescue the woman by using high-pressure air bags. She was taken to Stamford Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Officials said the entire extrication process took 10 minutes. WVIT-TV NBC 30 NEW BRITAIN Florida firefighters surprised by gunfire during attempt to extinguish house blaze VIDEO: Firefighters have a dangerous job to begin with, putting out risky and potentially deadly fires. They don't expect to deal with gunfire in the process. A holiday fire call turned dangerous Monday night with first responders dodging bullets after Lauderhill Fire Rescue crews arrived to the scene of a house fire that was possibly started by fireworks. "The crews on scene last night were in a lot of danger, not only the fire crews but also some of the residents that were outside celebrating," said Lauderhill Fire Rescue Lt. Joseph Panczak. As firefighters were putting out the flames, numerous gunshots rang out while hundreds of people were out celebrating the Fourth of July along the 2100 block of Northwest 59th Terrace, sending stray bullets flying. One of those bullets pierced a fire rescue truck windshield. WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI Fire and rescue paramedic students in Virginia participate in a first of its kind virtual reality training VIDEO: Imagine having doctors, first responders, and paramedics go through real life training before they ever enter the field, without the real life consequences. That's what students from Roanoke County Fire and Rescue experienced as part of a research study to see how these simulations affect a student's critical thinking. Ryan Lanning with Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department says he wanted to be more hands on in the community. That is why he decided to start training to be a paramedic. Lanning says, "I just enjoy the whole medical side of things. At the end of the day, we are here to serve the public and that is how we are going to do so the most." Lanning started training last winter. His class did a lot of in classroom exercises but recently they were part of only 200 students across the nation to try out a new hands-on virtual reality program.
