McLennan County: Downsville Volunteer Fire Department president dies The president of the Downsville Volunteer Fire Department has passed away. Assistant Chief Andy Bird announced on social media Monday night that Bryan Beavers passed away at his Downsville residence earlier in the day. Bird says that Bryan was not only the president of the department, but also a member. Bird says the past couple of weeks have been a "roller coaster" for the department, as they just buried another crew member, Jeffery Bucher, on Saturday morning. Bird says, "We have been hit hard, but we will not fall down. We will answer the call and always carry these memories of these fine gentlemen with us! We're all family! We will get on the truck and serve our community the way they would and make them proud on every call!! Always with us!" KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO 3 firefighters hospitalized during Henderson County fires Crews from more than a dozen East Texas departments were battling a fire that spanned 156 acres on Tuesday. "We got called out here about three o'clock so we'll probably be out here for another four or five hours, until 11, midnight maybe," said Sean Dugan the PIO for Texas A&M Forest Services. He said no one was hurt and some structures were threatened but none damaged. "We have a bunch of resources, fire departments, volunteer fire departments. We have three dozers from Texas A&M Forest Service and one engine," Dugan said. "We've had a lead plane and an air tanker working the fire. They've been called off." Tuesday afternoon, winds didn't help their fighting efforts. "Wildfire conditions are really bad right now. It's high level risk, so anything that can cause a spark, grills, welding, hay bailing equipment, just be very cautious with it, with anything that can cause a spark," Dugan said. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER New Waco fire station to be built in growing area When firefighters respond to a call, every moment matters. That's why as the area off of Ritchie Road grows, so does the need for a better response. The Waco Fire Department is looking to build a brand new station at the corner of Ritchie Road and Panther Way. "If you are having a cardiac arrest, you want to get somebody as quickly as possible," Waco Fire Chief Gregory Summers said. "Our goal is to get to somebody in four minutes. Right now we get pretty close to that, but we definitely want to improve upon that." The closest Waco fire station is currently on Imperial Drive which is about an eight-minute drive to the area. Whether it's a fire or a medical emergency, even an extra minute could make all the difference when talking about safety. "Without having that fire station out there, we can be somewhat compromised," Summers said. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Person being treated for burns in San Antonio following fire at Don Wes Flea Market, fire marshal says A person is being treated for burns on their arms in San Antonio following a massive fire that destroyed the Don Wes Flea Market in Donna on Saturday, according to Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Homero Garza. Garza believes the person was a vendor at the flea market. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters from across the Valley responded to Saturday's blaze. Garza says one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. An eyewitness is helping the fire marshal to put the pieces of the puzzle together. "We do have an eyewitness statement that puts it up in one of the rafters up high so it leads us to believe that it might have been something electrical, again, not being able to examine, we're not sure with 100 percent certainty," Garza said of the possible cause of the fire. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO Related: Valley fire officials push more flea market inspections Texas Mobilizes Army of Firefighters & Equipment to Battle Increasing Wildfires Governor Greg Abbott encouraged Texans to remain vigilant during increased wildfire activity this week as the State of Texas continues ongoing coordinated wildfire response efforts through the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM). Critical fire danger and widespread drought conditions have resulted in multiple wildfires continuing to burn across Texas, including the Chalk Mountain Fire in Somervell County and the 1148 Fire in Palo Pinto County. Both fires have caused local officials to issue voluntary evacuation orders for residents. "The State of Texas remains steadfast in our ongoing coordinated response to help Texans and communities affected by or at risk of wildfires," said Governor Abbott. "As we continue to deploy all available resources in response to widespread fire and drought conditions, Texans are encouraged to remain vigilant and weather-aware to protect themselves and their loved ones from dangerous wildfires." 9 Massachusetts firefighters suffer heat-related injuries battling 5-alarm blaze VIDEO: Boston firefighters battled a five-alarm fire inside multiple East Boston triple-decker homes Tuesday evening. First responders rushed to the scene in the 300 block of Princeton Street amid temperatures in the low 90s. Video from Sky 5 showed smoke and flames pouring from what appeared to be a staircase leading to the roof of the home. Paul Burke, the Boston fire commissioner said at least nine firefighters were injured battling the fire, primarily due to the heat. "The heat has been a problem today," Burke said. "We've had to circulate firefighters in and out because the heat is so bad." "There was heavy fire in the rear when they arrived and they had a hard time getting access to it," Burke said. Approximately a dozen firefighters could be seen standing on the roof, working to knock down the smoke and flames. They share videos of themselves cooking, rescuing puppies, and safety tips. Some of their videos have more than 400,000 views. Wendy Aguilar, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department, said the goal was to inform the public, but they're seeing another benefit as well. "It's working. We have young users who are reaching out and saying, 'When I grow up, I want to be a firefighter,'" said Aguilar. This video of the Sacramento Fire Department Station 17 cooking up some al pastor street tacos has more than 266,000 views. Capt. KXTV ABC 10 SACRAMENTO South Florida firefighters to lend mental health support to teams working in war-torn Ukraine VIDEO: As soldiers risk their lives on the front lines, crews of first responders are busy clearing out and re-building the areas that have been destroyed. Those crews, some of which are from other countries like America and Australia, aren't only clearing debris. They're also finding bodies. As a result, they're suffering from deep emotional stress. That's why a group of South Florida firefighters are headed to Poland to lend mental health support to the teams who need it most. "When you have a group of what we consider our brothers and sisters, wherever they are in the world, going above and beyond for something like this, the unthinkable, you want to be there for them," said Miami-Dade firefighter Lucianna Genova, who is among the first responders heading to help those on the front Ukrainian. WFOR-TV CBS 4 MIAMI ‘We all started running literally for our lives': Tennessee firefighter describes scene that injured colleague VIDEO: A volunteer firefighter is recovering from surgery after being injured while working a scene on I-40 Monday night. Captain Ted Presgraves with the Tennessee City Volunteer Fire Department suffered a leg injury after officials say a U-Haul driver plowed into their tanker near mile marker 155. "It doesn't take much for somebody to be in a life or death situation that's out there risking their lives," explained firefighter Luke Williams with the Tennessee City Volunteer Fire Department. That was the case around 9:30 a.m. Monday as Williams said around a dozen personnel from multiple agencies worked a tanker truck fire — many volunteers. "We don't want to die while we are out on the interstate trying to work an accident," stated Williams. Captain Presgraves was working the pump panel when Williams said the driver of a U-Haul van — later identified as 78-year-old Samuel Farmer — came full speed through the closed lane. WKRN-TV ABC 2 NASHVILLE First responders camp in Minnesota teaches teens ins and outs of rescues VIDEO: Driving boats, riding in planes, and learning the ins and outs of helicopter rescues - may sound like an action movie, but it's a reality for some east metro kids. WCCO went out with Ramsey County Sheriff's rescue team as a group of eager teens hit the water, too. Paw Htoo of St. Paul says, "I think it's really nice, this is a great opportunity for us." The Learning Jet program is hosting this first responders camp - and Paw is responding well, "I like helping people so they talk about CPR so I was really interested when we talked about it ." Tahjai Green is intrigued as well - his favorite part, "Probably seeing the fire trucks shoot the water." The students learned about fire rescues and now they are learning about the heaviness of water rescues. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
