Amarillo Fire's Annual Report highlights upward trend in call volume Last year was one of the busiest years in the history of the Amarillo Fire Department. Crews responded to more than 22,000 incidents in 2022. "Amarillo is growing exponentially; it's growing in all areas. A station used to run 4 to 7 calls and now it is not uncommon for a station to run 12 to 15 calls in a shift," said Captain Jeremy Hill, Public Information Officer at AFD. Last year, the department responded to 1,221 structure fires, the highest annual total on record. However, this number was overshadowed by the 15,063 medical calls, a driving force in the upward trend in call volume. "We looked at the data and we know that we run on more medical calls than anything else. So, we reacted and responded to that. In 2000 we had 5 paramedics, now we've got over 60 paramedics," Hill said. In the last 20 years, AFD's call volume has tripled. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Large home in Jasper County destroyed by fire A Tuesday night fire destroyed a large home in the Beech Grove Community. It happened shortly before 10:00 on County Road 160. Firefighters from Beech Grove, Angelina River, Tri-Community, East End, and Jasper worked to stop the spread of the flames through the approximately 4,000 square foot structure. It was initially believed that the residents were inside the house, so firefighters began searching inside the house even as the fire was raging. Fortunately, it was soon discovered that the residents were not at home. The flames were tapped out around 11:00, but volunteer firefighters were still on scene until about four o'clock Wednesday morning. Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter later said that the home was owned by Tracy Montana and Warren Croft. Gunter also said that although the cause of the fire is unknown, they do know the origin. VIDEO: Chicago house destroyed in large fire An extremely aggressive fire broke out Tuesday afternoon on Chicago's South Side. The Bronzeville building fire has since been put out, though firefighters have continued to pour water on it and are keeping an eye on hot spots. The Chicago Fire Department got the call around 3:40 p.m., and by then, the fire was on all floors of the three-story home in the 4500 block of South Michigan Avenue. "The flames were very, very intense. Honestly, you can see ash, smoke for quite a while. Even inside, I really went and closed all the windows so the ash and smoke wouldn't come inside," said neighbor Anthony White. Firefighters had to take a defensive position because of the intensity of the flames. They did not report any injuries, but also said they haven't been able to conduct a search of the house for any victims. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO State program in Maine wants to address volunteer firefighter shortage by funding retirement Two Maine firefighter organizations hope to enroll volunteers from the state's more than 400 departments in a new retirement program by the end of this year. Three quarters of the state's fire departments are run by volunteer fire chiefs, who along with other volunteers, are not eligible for retirement benefits because they do not work as full-time firefighters, according to the Maine Fire Chiefs Association. If the Maine Legislature's Appropriations Committee funds the $2.5 million price tag in LD 588, An Act to Promote Public Safety and Retain Essential First Responders by Funding the Maine Length of Service Award Program, volunteer firefighters, who must receive training just like their full-time counterparts, will be able to receive retirement benefits. On Wednesday, June 7, crews shut down a road near the intersection of state Route 241 and U.S. Route 30 and rerouted traffic after a minivan struck a motorcycle, seriously injuring one person. Some motorists expressed their frustration in crude gestures aimed at responders, according to the department. "We would like to sincerely apologize," reads the department's June 7 Facebook post. "We fully understand that your minor inconvenience on the ride home to your families far outweighs the safety of our crews and the trauma patient we were working on. We will try to do better next time."
