1 firefighter, 2 people taken to hospital following fire at north Austin group home A firefighter and two other people were rushed to the hospital after a fire broke out Tuesday morning at a North Austin group home and left six people displaced. The Austin Fire Department said the call came in at 10 a.m. reporting a fire at a house used as a group home located at 11219 Blossom Bell Drive. Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the scene. When first responders arrived, EMS transported one person to St. David's North for smoke inhalation while another person was transported to Seton Northwest for heat-related illness. An AFD firefighter was also taken to St. David's North for heat-related illness. Six people that will be displaced are being assisted by the Central Texas Red Cross. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN San Antonio Fire Department protocol changes when heat, humidity are extreme VIDEO: The extreme heat wave is intense and dangerous for anyone but especially firefighters. That's why the San Antonio Fire Department takes extra precautions in this type of heat. One such incident occurred Sunday afternoon when a car repair shop caught fire in the peak heat of the day. That type of structure fire would usually warrant a normal response, but SAFD Battalion Chief Mark Trevino called out 17 crews, which is more than usual. "We're really paying attention to the welfare of the fire crews because it's so hot and it's so humid. So we do have the ambulances out here and everybody to keep it cool," Trevino said. The extra crews allow Trevino to rotate firefighters. "Where you can usually work 20 minutes, you can probably only work five or ten in these kind of conditions," he said. It's all part of the protocol. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Laredo Fire Department hazmat team tackles chemical spill On Monday, June 19, The Laredo Fire Department responded to a reported chemical spill in the 300 block of Crossroads Avenue. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 7:04 p.m. and found a punctured 55-gallon drum containing phosphoric acid. According to the CDC, short-term exposure to the acid may cause skin burns. The Laredo Fire Department's hazardous materials (hazmat) team stabilized the incident and the business owner contacted a third-party environmental company to handle the cleanup and proper disposal of the chemical. No injuries were reported. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC 8 LAREDO 3 fires in one night keep Houston Fire Department busy, prompting officials to share advice as record heat continues Three separate fires kept firefighters busy overnight, prompting officials to share some advice as record heat continues across the Houston area. It takes a lot of work to get a fire under control, and doing that in a heat wave makes things even tougher for firefighters. Monday night, a house, a vacant apartment building, and a warehouse all went up in flames. The warehouse fire happened at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday on Schurmier near the South Beltway. It appears a box full of tires for semi-trucks started burning inside an open-air metal building. The company was closed at the time, but the cause of the fire is under investigation. The next fire happened not long after when a house fire was called in at about 1:22 a.m. on Jutland Road near Tavenor. No one was home, but the fire caused a lot of damage. The cause is also under investigation. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Massive fire at apartment complex construction site in Las Vegas PHOTOS: Dozens of Clark County Fire Department units responded on Tuesday afternoon after a large fire broke out at an apartment complex under construction in the southwest Las Vegas Valley at approximately 4:29 p.m. CCFD reported at least 20 units responded to a two-alarm fire on the 8000 block of W. Maule Ave., with more on the way. Upon arrival, the Battalion Chief called a 2nd alarm due to the amount of fire at the location. As of 11 p.m., crews were still battling the fire and trying to limit exposures to surrounding properties. Witnesses told FOX5 they heard loud popping sounds like a car backfiring or someone throwing boards off the roof when it started. Part of the 215 was shut down as smoke covered the roadway. High winds fueled the fire. No injuries were reported to construction crews on site when the fire broke out. KVVU-TV FOX 5 HENDERSON Mississippi Senate honors the state's first African American fire chief A pioneering firefighter is getting some overdue recognition. The Mississippi Senate and the City of Starkville have honored former Starkville fire Chief Willie Johnson with a resolution from the state. Johnson was the first African American fire chief in the state of Mississippi. Johnson's legacy began in 1988 when he took on the unprecedented role. He said the experience was worth the challenge. "It was very challenging with the personnel, both black and white," he said. "To be honest, those challenges were great to try and make everything balance out equally and evenly and that's the way I was going to promote and manage the department". His influence sparked an interest in the fire and rescue field in the state's African American community. Current Starkville Fire Chief Charles Yarbrough said his impact hit close to home. WCBI-TV CBS 4 COLUMBUS Firemen or Firefighter? A Push For The Latter is Making Waves This Week in Maryland With the Maryland State Firemen's Association Convention in town, a possible name change is looming. Some feel a simple change to 'Firefighter' would be more inclusive for women. The MSFA said this is not the first time they have heard this proposal and that a name change is 100% on the table this year. It would take a hefty vote, but several woman firefighters here on the Eastern Shore are not so sure it's even necessary. Sarah Townsend of Allen holds a position very few women on the Eastern Shore do. Fire Chief. It is through that role Townsend takes her stance on the possible name change. "As a woman chief myself, it does not impact me that it's called the firemen's association," said Townsend. When the fire whistle blows, it's not about whether we're called firemen, firefighters, firewoman, it's just about whether we can get there and do our job." WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO How E-Bike Battery Fires Became a Deadly Crisis in New York City His girlfriend told him not to buy the electric scooter. But Alfonso Villa Muñoz was intrigued. He was working in a Brooklyn bodega last August when a delivery man said he knew someone selling one for $700. Mr. Muñoz said yes. The scooter was cherry red with the number 7 on the front. Under the seat was an extra-large lithium ion battery. When it needed charging, Mr. Muñoz would remove the battery from the scooter and use both hands to lug it up to the couple's third-floor apartment in College Point, Queens. A month later, the battery exploded in the living room, unleashing flames that engulfed the apartment. Mr. Muñoz screamed for their 8-year-old daughter, Stephanie, who was asleep. He could not breach the wall of black smoke to get to her. Stephanie died from smoke inhalation. NEW YORK TIMES - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
