Dallas Fire-Rescue on track to meet recruiting goals for 2024 Dallas Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Delridge Williams provided an update on recruiting efforts for the department at a public safety committee meeting at Dallas City Hall on Tuesday. "We're going to meet, if not come close to exceeding, the numbers we projected at the beginning of the fiscal year," he shared. Chief Williams was excited to talk about the single-function paramedic program, for those who only want to become medics and not firefighters. There are also programs for military members and starting this fall, high school freshmen through a partnership with Dallas Independent School District and Dallas Community College. DFR has right-sized requirements for college hours and the Texas Success Initiative Assessment, increased testing from one or two times a year to year-round. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Governor Abbott honors Fritch Fire Chief killed in fire VIDEO: Texas Governor Greg Abbott offered his condolences to the family of a fire chief who died fighting a structure fire in the Texas Panhandle on Tuesday. Fritch Volunteer Fire Chief Zeb Smith responded to a structure fire and faced "unforeseen challenges." Smith was the first to arrive on scene of a house fire. He collapsed inside the home, suffering from a reported heart attack. Officials said Tuesday's structure fire was not directly related to the ongoing wildfires, but the cause is still under investigation. "I would be remise if I did not say that Chief Smith, along with other volunteer firefighters in this county and this department, has responded to the last nine days active fighting these fires," said Brandon Strope, with the Hutchinson County Office for Emergency Management. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Drones endangering firefighters involved in Panhandle wildfire battle, state officials say Firefighters across the Texas Panhandle are continuing to attack several large wildfires that broke out across the region last week, and officials are now issuing warnings that people flying drones in the area could risk the safety of those trying to extinguish the deadly infernos. "Firefighter and public safety are the top priorities in wildfire management," the Texas A&M Forest Service said in a Facebook post. "Unauthorized UAS (Unstaffed Aircraft Systems, or drones) flights over or near a wildfire could cause serious injury or death to firefighters in the air and/or firefighters and members of the public on the ground." That warning comes as work to contain and extinguish the largest wildfire in Texas history continues. FOX WEATHER Wichita Falls Fire Department looking to train more paramedics The Wichita Falls Fire Department is one step closer to training 24 firefighters as paramedics. The plan is to apply for a grant through FEMA worth over half a million dollars. City Councilors allowed the fire department to pursue that grant. According to Wichita Falls Fire Chief, Donald Hughes, the fire department is in desperate need of paramedics, and this grant would allow the training of 24 firefighters to that level. While the WFFD has EMT basic and advanced trained responders, Chief Hughes told me only four are paramedics. "I just feel that having paramedics out on those engines that could provide a higher level of care within three or four minutes, that's our usual response time, just seems really important to me at this time," Chief Hughes said. KOAM-TV CBS 7 PITTSBURG New tool helps Arizona firefighters extinguish electric car fires in a fraction of the time VIDEO: There's a new tool in the Tempe Fire Department's arsenal that they hope will make the challenge of fighting electric vehicle fires a thing of the past. "It's very easy to use and it has way less kick back than any of our firehoses," said Tempe Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chris Snow. It's called the Coldcut Cobra, and like the reptile it references, it helps firefighters strike at the heart of a fire. "The biggest problem that we have when we fight these EV fires is getting penetration into the battery pack that's underneath. Generally, it's underneath the floorboards of the vehicles," said Snow. The souped-up power washer has two modes: the first mode uses water to cut a tiny hole in objects; the next douses whatever is on the other side of the hole, like a burning car battery, with water. KTVK-TV CBS 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) Virginia fire museum debuts video tour A museum documenting the history of the Harrisonburg Fire Department is now equipped with a video tour led by the agency's long standing leader. On July 4th, 1944, an ice delivery truck had a short in its wiring, causing a vehicle fire. Another day, an oil stove blew up, causing over $1,500 in damage. Cigarettes caused accidental fires on Warsaw Avenue and many other locations throughout the year. These vignettes are recorded in a logbook from the 40s, one of the historical artifacts on display on the third floor of the public safety building in Harrisonburg. It sits alongside giant fire hose reels, rescue nets, and hazmat suits collected from the last 170-some years of firefighting in the city. And now, whenever you visit the museum, retired Fire Chief Larry Shifflett can be your guide – through a series of videos linked to QR codes at each exhibit. A Toledo firefighter can now add world champion to his resume. Marcus Waugh is the World's Strongest Firefighter. He took home that title at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus this past weekend. "I've always been very passionate about lifting weights. I love the feeling of lifting something really heavy and putting on a show for the crowd. I like being a showman as well as a strong man. I sat there for a second and looked at the crowd and everything boiled up. I lost my composure a bit on stage. It's still sinking in. I haven't fully realized what happened. I trained for over a year for the competition," Marcus Waugh said. And yes, the competition's namesake, Arnold Schwarzenegger, congratulated Marcus Waugh personally.
