Bystander alerts crews at different scene to fire at old church building in Harris County VIDEO: SkyEye was over the scene of a large fire that engulfed a former church on West Montgomery Road in northwest Harris County, but ABC13 has learned that wasn't the only fire that crews were busy tackling on Wednesday morning. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said that it all started at about 6:11 a.m. when firefighters responded to a call at a vacant convenience store at 11515 Highway 249. While crews were on scene at the store, a bystander walked up to them and said the church across the street was on fire as well. Five minutes later, firefighters arrived at the church on West Montgomery, near Klein Intermediate and Nitsch Elementary Schools, and found heavy smoke pouring out of the building. Nine fire departments and at least 60 personnel responded to the fire. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON McAllen Fire Department unveils new truck for airplane emergencies PHOTOS: The fire department here is newly prepared for potential airplane emergencies. Firefighters and city officials unveiled a new fire truck on Tuesday that will be used to respond to any emergencies at the McAllen International Airport. The fire department celebrated the acquirement of the E-ONE apparatus during a traditional "push-back" ceremony at the McAllen fire substation #4. "It's a tradition for the fire department going back to the 1800s in which the fire engines at the time were pulled by horses," said Interim Fire Chief Juan Gloria. "With that in mind, whenever a new apparatus arrived to a fire house, the firefighters themselves would bring the truck to the front of the fire station — they would clean it, they would wash it and, by hand, they would push it back inside the quarters to put it in service and that is what we're going to replicate today." The new truck is equipped with a 1,500 gallon on-board water tank and a high extendable reach turret, or H.E.R.T., piercing tip. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Corpus Christi Fire Station 14 approved for renovations Fire crews at Fire Station 14 will see some upgrades to their facility very soon. Recently, the City of Corpus Christi approved a renovation project to the fire station facility. Firefighters have been in the building off S. Staples for more than 45 years. The building has been in need of repairs for a while and the hope for the upgrade is to provide safety and efficiency for the first responders who stay there during their shifts. Interim Fire Chief, Richie Quintero says the department has made the facility their second home. "It's where they do part of their work," said Quintero, "It's also where they come between classes, decompress, they also sleep there, they provide for their own meals there, exercise and anything and everything that would happen in a regular home." The kitchen has already been renovated. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Fire destroys historic, 160-year-old J.T. Rogers Cabin in McLennan County VIDEO/PHOTOS: 160 years of central Texas history was gone in a matter of minutes the morning of Tuesday, March 21. A fire destroyed the J.T. Rogers Cabin, one of only a handful of two-story log cabins remaining in the state of Texas. It was built in the 1860s in McLennan County on a piece of property that is located on Rogers Hill Road between Gholson and West. The current owners were using the old building for storage and a workshop. Now, they're just wishing those old walls could talk. "Wouldn't it be nice if they could talk? This was built in the 1860s, maybe earlier. They didn't keep good records of when things were built," said Ted Helm, "It was used as a stagecoach stop and they said the Chisolm Trail riders would stop by here during a drought to get water out of our well." Helm's cousins now own the property. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

LOUIS An emerging fungal threat spread at an alarming rate in US health care facilities, study says Clinical cases of Candida auris, an emerging fungus considered an urgent threat, nearly doubled in 2021, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There was also a tripling of the number of cases resistant to echinocandins, the first-line treatment for Candida auris infections. The research, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, evaluated cases of Candida auris reported to the CDC from 2016 – the year in which cases were first reported in the US – to 2021. The study authors found that clinical cases increased each year, rising from 53 in 2016 to 330 in 2018 and then skyrocketing from 476 in 2019 to 1,471 in 2021. Cases of Candida auris also expanded geographically. . Although it was initially confined mostly to the New York City and Chicago areas, Candida auris is now present in more than half of US states. Between 2019 and 2021, 17 states identified their first cases. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
