6 hospitalized after fire damages 2 Austin mobile homes Six people are in the hospital Wednesday morning after two mobile homes burned on Research Boulevard just northwest of Lamar Boulevard. The Austin Fire Department is investigating what caused the fire and won't have an update until 9 a.m. Paramedics with Austin-Travis County EMS took three adults and three kids to the hospital. One adult has critical, life threatening injuries. Two of the children have serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. The other three are expected to survive. Austin Fire said crews got the call about the fire in the 8100 block of northbound Research Boulevard at 11:38 Tuesday night. Crews were able to knock down the fire by 12:10 a.m. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN El Paso Fire Department seeing uptick in electrical fires this year The El Paso Fire Department is warning residents about electrical fires after seeing an uptick in them so far this year. The department has been called out to 21 electrical fires since the beginning of the year. That's compared to 12 electrical fires during the same time frame last year. "They usually start by neglect," said Lt. Juan Acuna. "Frayed wires, overload of plugs, overload of power strips...(some) people think that the strip is safe and it is safe, but once you overload something, it is unsafe." Lt. Acuna suggests making sure to check on your electrical cords at least once a month. The biggest tip hiring a certified electrician. If a small fire starts in your home due to an electrical issue and you're able to put it out, it's still best you call the fire department. "We have equipment where we can check through the wall and see if it's still heated or warm or hot," Lt. Acuna said. KVIA-TV ABC/CW 7 EL PASO Fire destroys home on San Antonio's far west side VIDEO: A West Side woman said she is heartbroken after a fire destroyed her home early Wednesday morning. The fire was called in just after 4 a.m. at a home in the 7400 block of Buckskin, not far from Highway 90 and Loop 410. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames coming from the side of the home. They then went inside and found the fire in the attic. Fire officials said the fire quickly spread throughout the house, destroying it. The exact cause is not currently known. The woman co-owned the home with her estranged husband, but no one was supposed to be living there, according to the battalion chief. She was not present when the fire happened, but she said she got a call from a neighbor and then quickly arrived at the property. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO 2,000-acre Pope 2 fire burns in Schleicher County PHOTO: A wildfire in Schleicher County has grown from an estimated 500-acres on Monday to an estimated 2,000-acres on Wednesday morning. The Pope 2 fire, located about 10-miles southwest of Fort McKavett, was initially reported to be 500-acres in size and 40% contained when the Texas A & M Forest Service began responding to requests for assistance on Monday evening, May 16, 2022. According to the Forest Service, the wildfire grew to an estimated 2,000-acres since Monday and was approximately 50% contained when the agency last released an update on Tuesday evening. On Tuesday afternoon, the Forest Service reported that the fire, still 500-acres in size, had been 80% contained through the use of on-the-ground fire crews and firefighting planes. KLST-TV CBS 8 SAN ANGELO Mesquite Heat Fire: Officials say 10 homes destroyed in south Taylor County Fire officials confirm 10 homes have been destroyed in south Taylor County during the Mesquite Heat Fire. Red Cross officials told KTAB and KRBC the 10 homes were burned and the Texas A&M Forest Service says multiple structures were lost as well. Right now, evacuation orders are still in effect for residents affected by the fire, which was 10% contained as of Tuesday morning but officials expect the fire to pick back up again as conditions get hot later in the day. The Mesquite Heat Fire has burned 1500 acres near the Coronado's Camp Hidden Valley area off Hwy 277. A social media post from the Taylor County Sheriff's Office says, "there are no immediate plans to lift the evacuation order and the Sheriff's Office is not letting people back into evacuated areas due to the high probability of homes being in danger." KRBC-TV NBC 9 ABILENE CPR device donated to Sabine Fire & Rescue in Gregg County A device donated to Sabine Fire and Rescue is now another tool they can use in lifesaving efforts. The department received a Lucas 3.0 CPR device. It is a machine that department chief Richard Sisk says can deliver CPR and chest compressions more efficient than a person can. "We believe the device could possibly change the outcome of cardiac arrest if we arrive on scene, between it, an AED, and then advanced medical care, ALS and than hospital care, we believe the device could possibly change the outcome," Sisk said. It was purchased by East Texan Mike Clements, owner of Energy Weldfab, and donated to the department. It costs around $18,000. "I think we are very blessed to have this device and to have Mr. Clements be willing to spend the money and donate the device to the department," Sisk said. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEOS: Over 150 firefighters battle pallet yard fire in Arizona A crew of over 150 responded to a wind-driven fire at a pallet yard late Tuesday night in Phoenix. According to Phoenix Fire, crews arrived at the scene near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road just after 10 p.m. on May 17 and immediately called for backup. When additional firefighters arrived, a surround and drown operation was established, "with elevated master streams and flowing big water to suppress the flames and keep them from extending to nearby businesses." The main body of the fire was controlled. Crews were still on scene Wednesday morning to extinguish hot spots. No injuries were reported. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX 2 Firefighter Unions In Maryland Say Firefighter Safety Act Could Prevent Them From Doing Their Jobs Two local firefighter's unions made clear Tuesday that they do not support the Firefighter Safety Act because it "seems poised to unreasonably restrict" them from performing their duties. The Baltimore Fire Fighters Association and the Baltimore Fire Officers Association in a six-page letter to the Baltimore City Council described their grievances with the bill, which regulates the way firefighters respond when a vacant building is on fire. Councilwoman Danielle McCray (D-District 2) crafted the bill after three firefighters were killed on Jan. 24 after part of a vacant house that was on fire collapsed on them. A fourth firefighter—John McMaster—was buried amid the rubble but survived his injuries. "At the scene of a dwelling fire at 203-7 S. Stricker St., we tragically lost the lives of Lieutenant Kelsey Sadler, and Firefighter Kenneth Lacayo," the letter states. WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE Los Angeles Fire Department unveils new electric fire truck becoming first department in US to have electric fire engine VIDEO: The Los Angeles Fire Department had a big day over the weekend after becoming the first fire department in the country to have an electric fire engine. The truck was unveiled Saturday morning outside the LAFD historical museum in Hollywood. It's been assigned to Station 82, and was custom-made by a company in Austria that builds firefighting tools and equipment. In addition to the zero emissions and quieter motor, the fire truck meets all national fire standards, and is smaller in width than standard fire trucks. The Fight for Air Climb raises money for lung-related research, aid and advocacy by challenging people to climb thousands of stairs. On May 21, Minnesotans will climb 4,380 steps in "the best set of stairs in the Twin Cities," at Allianz Field in St. Paul. It will be Ken Bence's 15th climb. As the Battalion Chief for the Golden Valley Fire Department, he takes on the added challenge of competing in full firefighter gear (that's 65 pounds of helmet, air tank, suit and boots). The New Hope man's contribution to the Minnesota Fight for Air Climb has been much more than climbing steps. Since his first climb in 2008, he's raised $75,000 for its backing organization, the American Lung Association. HOMETOWN SOURCE Fire department becomes first in Michigan to utilize remote methane leak detector After a generous donation from Heath Consultants of Houston, Texas, the Sterling Heights Fire Department becomes the first in Michigan to utilize a new remote methane leak detector. This device will allow first responders to quickly scan common venting points within a building from a safe distance to determine if methane gas is present. "Many times, first responders are called to natural gas emergencies, and up until now, we've only had a way to detect for gases while inside what could be a potentially hazardous environment or in the correct flammable range to set off an explosion with just a spark," said Fire Chief Kevin Edmond. "This new device can be used to detect gases remotely, keeping our team safely away from potentially dangerous structures and situations." WDIV-TV NBC 4 DETROIT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
