19 Children, 2 Adults Killed in Uvalde School Shooting VIDEO: The 18-year-old gunman who slaughtered 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school barricaded himself inside a single classroom and "began shooting anyone that was in his way," authorities said Wednesday in detailing the latest mass killing to rock the U.S. Law enforcement officers eventually broke into the classroom and killed the gunman, who used an AR-style rifle. Police and others responding to Tuesday's attack also went around breaking windows at the school to enable students and teachers to escape, Lt. Christopher Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety said on NBC's "Today" show. The killer "barricaded himself by locking the door and just started shooting children and teachers that were inside that classroom," he said. "It just shows you the complete evil of the shooter." KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Governor addresses Mesquite Heat fire response in Taylor County, thanks first responders Tuesday marked one week since the Mesquite Heat fire broke out in Taylor County. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott spoke at the Taylor County Precinct One facility where he thanked first responders for their work on the fire that destroyed 20 homes and burned more than 11,000 acres. Abbott said right now, the key focus is on assessing the damage in the area. "Gathering information to be able to show how much damage has occurred this is very important because our ability to get a federal disaster declaration will depend upon the total amount of damages that have been sustained," Abbott said. The governor said in the past few months there have been 73 counties with governor-declared wildfire disasters. Because of the Mesquite Heat fire, Taylor County is among that group. The fire was 58 percent contained as of Tuesday afternoon. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO Mission firefighters rescue at least 8 from high water Many people experienced high water across the Rio Grande Valley early Tuesday morning. City of Mission firefighters saved at least eight people from the high water while overcoming challenges. Mission Assistant Fire Chief Robert Alvarez, who is also the Emergency Management Coordinator, said they had to use their high-profile truck to pull people to safety. "We had to deploy one of our high-profile vehicles with our personnel to go and evacuate some citizens who were requesting to be evacuated from the residence due to the rising water and then we also had to experience some vehicles that had driven into high water, and those people needed to be rescued from the vehicles," said Alvarez. He said gratefully no one was injured despite facing a big obstacle in their rescue efforts. KVEO-TV NBC/CBS 23 BROWNSVILLE El Paso Fire Department Shares Photo of Random Act of Kindness By Local Paramedic PHOTOS: No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted and that quote was proven to be true after one El Paso Fire Paramedic offered help to someone in need this past week. The El Paso Fire Department shared a photo of the sweet moment that was caught in Downtown El Paso. According to the post, Fire Paramedic Joseph Luna was on the scene of a fire when he noticed a man trying to cross the street. Paramedic Luna quickly ran over to the man and offered his assistance. In the photo, you can see the man holding a support cane which is typically used for Visually Impaired and Blind People. "These small details embody the true spirit of the fire department: to serve our community with pride," read the post on the El Paso Fire Department's Facebook page. KLAQ-FM 95.5 EL PASO Window washers rescued from downtown high-rise by Houston Fire Department It was a scary morning for some window washers who got stuck while working on a downtown Houston high-rise. Several of the workers were on the 50th floor of the building at 1100 Louisiana at the time, according to the Houston Fire Department. An HFD captain at the scene said a mechanical issue caused their platform to get stuck just as the storms were rolling in so they called for help. Firefighters with the heavy rescue unit used the tower crane to raise a crew up to the window washers. They were able to get the mechanical issue solved so the window washers could move their platform to safety on the top of the Enterprise Plaza building. "We were set up to recover them if they couldn't do that, we were gonna take a window out of the side of the building at the level they were at and just help them off the stage," HFD Senior Captain Mason Mills told us. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON State is seeing a COVID-19 uptick heading into Memorial Day weekend Texas is seeing a COVID-19 uptick heading into Memorial Day weekend. New cases are increasing and COVID experts say a bump in hospitalizations is likely to follow. The BA.2.12.1 subvariant appears to be more contagious but not as deadly as previous strains. It's expected to overtake the BA.2 subvariant and become the dominant strain in Texas very soon. "We are starting to see increases in our case counts all across the state," said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the state's chief epidemiologist at the Texas Department of State Health Services. Dr. Shuford says this latest uptick in cases can't compare to the December/January surge, but it still bears watching. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Why do Reno fire investigators prosecute more cases than the national average? VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Reno Fire Department fights hundreds of fires each year. There's a team focused on the dozens of fires that are intentionally set. Arson cases are the least often, least effectively prosecuted criminal offenses in America even though they are the largest dollar loss crime, exceeding burglaries, thefts and armed robberies combined, according to the interFire website. Out of the 250 to 300 fires in Reno each year, about 50 of them are arson. Nationally, the prosecution rate is between 1% and 3% for arson fires. Tray Palmer, the fire marshal for the Reno Fire Department said Reno has a 20% prosecution rate. He says there's a reason the city's rates are higher. The four arson investigators are certified police officers meaning they carry guns and have the ability to make arrests. "They're police officers as well as fire inspectors," said Palmer. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Related: 27 school shootings have taken place in the US so far this year Duke University Scientists: Silicone Wristbands Track Firefighters' Exposure to Harmful Chemicals Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from the disease than the general adult U.S. population, according to studies by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and other agencies. Recent research by scientists at Duke University could give doctors and public health officials a new tool for tracking firefighters' exposures to cancer-causing chemicals and determining where and when the risks might be greatest. The cool thing is, it's not some expensive high-tech gadget. It's just a silicone wristband, purchased in bulk for about $1 apiece. "It turns out that ordinary silicone wristbands, like the ones sold in stores, absorb the semi-volatile organic compounds you're exposed to while you're out in the world," said Jessica Levasseur, a PhD student at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment, who led the study.
