Pilot dead after plane crashes in Plano shopping center parking lot, officials say VIDEOS/PHOTOS: A single-engine Mooney M20 airplane crashed in Plano outside of Mama's Daughters' Diner at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the FAA. The FAA has confirmed that the pilot, who was the only person on board, died in the crash. The plane went down outside of the shopping center that houses the restaurant, which is located at 6509 W. Park Blvd. No other injuries have been reported as a result of the crash. In a Tuesday night press conference, officials declined to identified the pilot, as next of kin had not yet been notified of their death. According to Plano police, the aircraft didn't land on or collide with any other vehicles or structures when it crashed. A nearby, unoccupied vehicle caught fire as a result of the incident, however. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS New Training Helps Starr County Firefighters Combat Wildfires In response to a rising concern of wildfires in Starr County, South Texas College has partnered with emergency experts and county officials to develop a Heavy Equipment Operator course with a Bulldozer emphasis for firefighting personnel. "Earlier this year, STC participated in several meetings with Starr County firefighters and Emergency Management personnel, along with representatives of the Border Pacific Railroad, to discuss how to support training," said STC Vice President of Information Services, Planning, Performance and Strategic Initiatives David Plummer, Ed.D. "One of the most needed areas identified was the lack of available bulldozer operators that could assist with removing vegetation to stop the spread of wildfires." Fourteen firefighters from across the county have recently completed the brand-new course, offered at STC's Starr County campus, ensuring that personnel didn't have to travel far for training. TEXAS BORDER BUSINESS Houston firefighters rescue driver from box truck overturned on edge of I-45 VIDEO: First responders jumped to action when a box truck overturned on an HOV exit lane on the I-45 North Freeway at Crosstimbers Street on Wednesday morning. It's unclear exactly what led to the box truck tipping over, but video from the scene shows that it nearly rolled over the edge of the overpass. ABC13 was live from the ground and from SkyEye as Houston firefighters worked to rescue the driver from the truck. It appeared firefighters used a harness to hoist the driver out of the passenger side window. Eventually, the ladder trucks retreated and an ambulance was seen leaving the scene. The driver's condition was unknown. All I-45 southbound lanes were closed at Crosstimbers Street as officials worked to upright the truck. ABC13 has reached out to police for more information about what led to the crash. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

California SWAT standoff comes to a deadly end after suspect's home burns down VIDEO: A SWAT standoff turned into a fiery inferno after the suspect's Upland home burst into flames after a gunfight Monday night. The deadly shootout started around 3:15 p.m. when deputies tried to serve a search warrant at the suspect's home between North Benson Avenue and North Mountain Avenue, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. The suspect shot at deputies when they approached the home. The suspect then barricaded himself inside for several hours. After multiple attempts to negotiate with the man, deputies tried to enter the home after deploying tear gas. The suspect then set off explosives shortly before the house burst into flames. He tried to run out of the house as it burned, but died after a shootout with authorities, according to the Upland Police Department. A quick visit to new fire stations in the Salt Lake Valley shows no more fire poles. More fire stations are being built without them, in this edition of Behind the Badge. New fire stations in Utah, like #125 in Midvale, have everything you may expect: firefighters and fire trucks, but no fire pole. A traditional staple for fire stations, Unified Fire Authority Asst. Chief Zach Robinson said they never planned for one when building the new station. Robinson, who helped design the new Midvale station, said they're phasing the pole out. "Right now with the construction phase we're in, with one-story fire stations, it's not been a necessary item for us," said Robinson. KTVX-TV ABC 4 SALT LAKE CITY Pilot killed in fiery plane crash in north Texas shopping center parking lot VIDEO: A pilot was killed after a small plane crashed into a shopping center parking lot at a Texas shopping center on Tuesday, authorities said. Police in Plano, 20 miles north of Dallas, said the aircraft crashed directly outside a nail salon and Mama's Daughter's Diner, just before 6 p.m. "The pilot unfortunately lost their life in the tragic accident," police said in a statement on X. The pilot was the only person on board and has not been named while their family is informed. Remarkably, no one else was hurt and there were no reports of damage to buildings. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Travel Safety Board are investigating. The cause of the crash is currently unknown. NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported that in the moments before the crash, the pilot appeared to become disoriented, citing unnamed people who have reviewed materials connected to the flight.
