Houston Special Events Task Force outlines new safety measures in wake of Astroworld Festival For the first time since its creation in February, the City of Houston-Harris County Special Events Task Force came together publicly with their plans for large-scale events at NRG Park. The team, created in response to the fatal Astroworld Festival, was tasked with the goal of intense collaboration to prevent tragedies like Travis Scott's Live Nation event in the future. On Nov. 5 2021, a crowd surge during the first night of the Astroworld Festival killed 10 people. A recent lawsuit also claims an attendee lost her unborn child because of the event. Questions quickly arose about which agencies had jurisdiction over safety, security, and medical response. "NRG is a county facility, but it's located in the city of Houston. So, when you're planning events, people need to know who is responsible for what," Mayor Sylvester Turner said during Monday's press conference. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Leander Grocery store fire causes $350k in damage, one firefighter injured A fire at Leander Grocery over the weekend caused around $350,000 worth of damage and left one firefighter injured. The Leander Fire Department was dispatched to the reported commercial structure fire at 307 South US Highway 183 just before 5:30 Sunday morning. When crews arrived several minutes later, they determined the fire was in the attic of the unoccupied building. It then spread to the roof. Sponsored Links LFD said there was a secondary roof on the building that complicated the process of extinguishing the flames. It took approximately two hours to completely put out the fire and the last unit cleared the scene at 10:05 a.m. During the ordeal, a firefighter fell off a ladder and broke his foot. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Travis County Bartenders to Be Trained as ‘First Responders' in Strategy to Reduce Fentanyl Deaths More than a dozen bars in Texas will soon be stocked with naloxone and bartenders will be trained as "first responders" to administer the medication that can reverse an opioid overdose, Travis County Judge Andy Brown announced on Monday. "Today, I'm excited to share how we are taking life-saving steps that are more inclusive and meet people where they are," Brown said during a press conference at the Star Bar in Austin. The event was live-streamed on KVUE News. The initiative is part of the county's strategy to reduce accidental overdose deaths. "Travis County is working with nonprofits here and local nonprofits to provide bars and bartenders with Narcan, plus the training that is required to use it," he continued. Narcan is one of the brand names under which naloxone is sold. THE EPOCH TIMES House fire on Tyler's west side displaces 3 people Firefighters worked together Tuesday night to put out a large house fire in Tyler. The fire destroyed a home in the 9200 block of Lakeshore Drive. According to Smith County Deputy Fire Marshal Barron Wedgeworth, a homeowner heard a noise upstairs at around 8:07, went to see what it was, and saw a fire. The residents were able to get out safely. No one was injured, including firefighters. Wedgeworth said that at least three people live in the home. Lindale, Chandler, Flint-Gresham and Dixie fire departments worked together to put the fire out, and Wedgeworth said it is under control now. The fire will be investigated to determine the cause, he added. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Kerrville Fire Department seeks funds for matching grant The Kerrville Fire Department is seeking year-end donations to support an important need: a six-wheel, all-terrain vehicle. Currently the department has a golf cart that has been outfitted for emergency services. Due to the vehicle's limitations, it can only be effectively used along the River Trail. The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country is matching all donations up to $30,000. The total cost for the vehicle and the rescue equipment that goes with it is $60,000. "We're in need of a utility vehicle that can help with wildland fires, water rescue, moving a patient, accessing rough terrain during search and rescue, and helping in ice storms, like taking potable water to stranded residents," KFD Chief Eric Maloney said. The Kerrville Fire Department is an "all hazard" fire department, meaning it helps with any number of emergencies beyond fire. HILL COUNTY COMMUNITY JOURNAL PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

It's called the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) building. During Tuesday's ribbon cutting, two new fire trucks were also unveiled and they're unlike any emergency vehicle around. "These types of fire trucks are not really necessary outside of the airport. They are designed specifically for aircraft and airports," said Board Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority Darlene Wilson. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Fire Chief Cory Moon said the two new trucks are bigger and can hold more water and have other unique features. "Blaze One has a height reach extendable turret with a piercing nasal that's able to breach the skin of an aircraft and extinguish the fire inside the aircraft," said Moon. THE EPOCH TIMES CDC: Flu season intensifies with 6M infected in US Flu season is intensifying in the U.S. with more than 6 million cases confirmed so far, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Monday. The federal health agency said in a weekly update it has already recorded more than 53,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths from the flu this season, as of the week ending Nov. 19. Twelve children have died from the flu so far, the CDC said, and the cumulative hospitalization rate is the highest it's been at this point in the flu season since the 2010-2011 one. The CDC recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older get vaccinated against the flu annually. Flu season typically starts in October and ends around May, with a peak in December or January. It began six weeks early this year, causing a spike in hospitalization rates. THE HILL PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
