San Antonio reacts after firefighter dies in freak accident in line of duty A firefighter with the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) has died following an accident Tuesday morning, according to San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood. Firefighter Greg Garza, a 17-year veteran with SAFD, was hit by a van while on scene at an electrical call in the 500 block of Live Oak, Chief Hood said. Garza, 49, was taken to Brook Army Military Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The SAFD is asking for prayers and continued vigilance. "Greg was a stunningly tall, muscular man. He was a happy individual. Every time you saw Greg he had a big smile on his face," Chief Hood said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. A memorial account for Garza has been set up at Generations FCU. Anyone wishing to donate should reference the "Greg Garza Memorial Account." Their fire-fighting comrades, meanwhile, stood at attention on an overpass, lost in thought hours after a fellow firefighter died in a tragic accident Tuesday morning, and reflecting on who will fill a pair of boots, now empty. On the freeway, drivers stopped to watch, many not yet knowing what had happened. The plaintive wail of a siren broke the silence, crying the news no community ever wants to hear: that someone dedicated to protecting and serving would never answer another roll call. Traditionally, an honor guard remains with the fallen until their funeral service. Those arrangements are pending as of Tuesday evening. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Woman rescued from underneath SUV in southwest Houston Houston firefighters helped rescue a woman who was trapped underneath an SUV after an auto-pedestrian collision on the wet roads of southwest Houston. The woman was crossing Fondren Road along Bellaire Boulevard in a crosswalk when the driver of an SUV turning onto Bellaire from Fondren ran over her, police officers on scene said. The woman was crossing the street without permission from the crosswalk control signal, the officers said. First responders called for a full team of rescue crews to pull her out from underneath the SUV – but the first-arriving firefighters wound up rescuing her using a floor-jack to lift the vehicle. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in an unknown condition, but officers said she is expected to be OK. Officers questioned the driver, who was released on scene. Justice Leanne Johnson of the Texas Ninth District Court of Appeals at Beaumont wrote the Oct. 10 opinion. Justices Steve McKeithen and Charles Kreger concurred. The judges affirmed the decision from the Jefferson County District as they ruled against all three of Billy Fratus' issues. The former fire chief had sued the city, asking for damages, declaratory relief and injunctive relief with allegations that Beaumont had violated the Texas Constitution and Chapter 21 of the Texas Labor Code when it fired him while he was on disability. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK Fire Destroys 2 Storage Tanks at Oil Facility in California Two chemical storage tanks caught fire and three others were threatened at an energy storage facility in Contra Costa County Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials. The blaze burned the two tanks to the ground and damaged two others at the NuStar Energy facility in Crockett, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, which got the first call at about 1:50 p.m. No injuries were reported. People in Crockett and Rodeo were asked to shelter in place. They were encouraged to stay inside and keep their windows and doors closed. The shelter in place was lifted at about 9:30 p.m. Both directions of Interstate 80 were shut down between Highway 4 and the Carquinez Bridge for more than 6 hours. The tanks were partially filled with ethanol, and fire crews used foam to fight the flames and water to cool the adjacent tanks that weren't burning, according to ConFire and NuStar officials. EYEWITNESS NEWS (WEHT/WTVW) Ohio city planning to close long-standing fire station, eliminate battalion chiefs The president of the union representing Youngstown firefighters said he was surprised to learn the city plans to close a fire station and eliminate three battalion chiefs through attrition. Charlie Smith, who is also a battalion chief, said the plans were revealed in a Tuesday morning meeting with Youngstown City Law Director Jeff Limbian. Although the city asked for the meeting last week, Smith said the city would not reveal an agenda, so he was shocked to learn that Station 7, at Madison Avenue and Elm Street, would be closed. Smith said the station, which is right next to Youngstown State University and just a few blocks from St. Elizabeth Health Center, is the busiest in the city and its closing would hurt response times not only on the north side but across the city. Because of its close proximity to the Madison Avenue Expressway, Station 7 answers most calls in the city, Smith said. WYTV ABC 33 Military firefighters in Delaware question whether myriad of medical problems are related to toxic chemicals in firefighting foam They're called "forever chemicals." Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS, PFOS, and PFOA, are man-made chemicals that are all around us. It's expected that the average person has some exposure to the chemicals in their lifetimes whether it's through food containers or the water we drink. The Environmental Protection Agency has linked exposure to certain levels of PFOA and PFOS to cancer, liver and immune deficiencies, as well as developmental effects to fetuses during pregnancy or breastfed infants. But as more information comes out about just how harmful these chemicals are, military firefighters--who had daily exposure to the chemicals in AFFF foam--are starting to wonder if it's the source of their myriad of mysterious health problems.
