Canyon Fire Department gets nearly $300K to buy new air packs The Canyon Fire Department has secured approval for essential upgrades. The Canyon City Commission approved the purchase of 30 new air packs for the fire department. A firefighter's air pack is a self-contained breathing apparatus and is a critical part in keeping firefighters protected. The useful life of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is estimated to be about 15 years. The current SCBA units in use within Canyon's fire department are 20 years old. "It's come to the point that our current SCBA's that are in use, if one goes down, out of service, we are finding parts are not available just because of the age of them," said Dennis Gwyn, Fire Chief, Canyon Fire Department. The updated packs have many new safety features. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Grand opening, open house set for new Silsbee fire station Volunteer firefighters and residents in Silsbee are looking forward to the grand opening this weekend of the city's newest fire station. In December 2021 the Silsbee Independent School District board of trustees sold the property where the old Kirby Elementary School once stood to Hardin County Emergency Services District Six. More than two years later, the brand new 16,000 square-foot-fire station has been built on the 13.5 acre piece of land. The public will get its first up-close look at the new facility on Saturday, October 21, 2023. A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the new station in the middle of Silsbee at the corner of N Fifth and Highway 418. Following the ceremony the firehouse will be open for the public tour until noon. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Smith County Fire Marshal's Office installs weather system station to prepare for storms, fire investigations The Smith County Fire Marshal's Office recently installed a Weather System Station at the Emergency Operations Center to give both emergency officials and members of the public real-time access to weather data. WeatherSTEM gives residents the ability to see a large amount of information about the weather without having to sign up. People can just go to the website to view a forecast specific to different health conditions, Smith County Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Moore said. "WeatherSTEM's accessibility makes it a useful tool for the whole community and will enhance the abilities of emergency services," Smith County Fire Marshal Chad Hogue said. "Realtime weather information, such as wind direction and speed, is vital during fire and hazardous materials incident responses." KYTX-TV CBS/CW+ 19 NACOGDOCHES Austin-Travis County EMS shares updated scooter injury data It's pretty common to see people zipping around on e-scooters in Downtown Austin. But just how dangerous are they to ride? Apparently, not as much as some might think. According to KVUE's media partners at the Austin American-Statesman, from July through September, Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) estimates there were 48 accidents involving e-scooters, out of the 29,423 patients medics saw during that timeframe. In that same period, Austinites and visitors took 725,700 trips on scooters, for a total of 754,658 miles with an average speed of 6 miles per hour. The Statesman reports that for the entirety of the last fiscal year, which ended on Sept. 30, ATCEMS responded to 169 incidents involving a scooter. Most of those resulted in a trip to the hospital, but only eight involved serious injuries. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: More than 70 firefighters called to fight massive fire at Arizona warehouse Phoenix firefighters battled a massive third-alarm blaze in at a warehouse early Wednesday morning. Phoenix fire officials tell Arizona's Family that crews were called out to 13th Avenue and Roosevelt Street just after midnight. When firefighters arrived, they found massive flames and large plumes of smoke billowing from a warehouse in the area. Officials believe that warehouse is used as a liquidation distributor for drug and grocery products. Crews immediately upgraded the call to a first-alarm to ensure adequate resources to fight the blaze, but as firefighting efforts continued, crews ultimately had to call a third-alarm as more than 70 firefighters were forced to respond. Video from the scene showed authorities still working to put out hotspots as the fire was still smoldering more than 6 hours after the initial call. KTVK-TV CBS 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) Colorado Supreme Court ruled in favor of reverse-keyword search Denver Police used to track arson suspects VIDEOS/PHOTOS: In a 5 -2 decision, the Colorado Supreme Court on Monday ruled the controversial reverse Google keyword search warrant utilized by the Denver Police Department to track down suspects involved in a house fire that killed a Senegalese family of five in Denver's Green Valley Ranch neighborhood in 2020 could be admitted as evidence and remanded "the case to the trial court for further proceedings consistent with this opinion." It's a decision that could have broad implications in how investigators use digital technology to help crack cases beyond this case. The fire in the 5300 block of N. Truckee Street on August 5, 2020, which investigators suspected started as a result of arson, killed a toddler, child, and three adults. The family had immigrated to Colorado from Senegal. KMGH-TV ABC 7 DENVER Firefighters in Nevada will be responsible for racing week safety of F1 drivers, spectators VIDEO: While dirt and traffic headaches turn into extravagant Las Vegas Grand Prix (LVGP) grandstands and world-class racing structures, first responders are preparing for potential obstacles to reach thousands of spectators and hotel guests during three days of street closures. The track that's in place today – nearly four miles of public roads, including the Las Vegas Strip – once looked much different. That's according to Renee Wilm, CEO of the LVGP, who told 8 News Now in June that police originally raised red flags due to a lack of evacuation routes. "A lot of safety changes," Wilm said during a summer tour of the paddock building, referencing different county and law enforcement input that altered the original track layout. KLAS-TV CBS 8 LAS VEGAS North Dakota fire department's haunted house returns with chills and thrills If you take a wrong turn here this weekend, you could end up lost in a haunted corn maze, or worse - you could be chased by one of the creepy characters that lurk in the dark. The Belfield Volunteer Fire Department is putting on its yearly haunted house fundraiser on Main Street. "There's maybe one or two things that are the same, but everything else is completely different than it was last year," Ashley Gross, volunteer firefighter said. "We took it down last year and then we rebuilt it." She said people aged six to 80 volunteer to make the event a success. Gross has been volunteering for the project for more than a decade, she said. There are 25 to 35 people who come together every year to put on the event. Volunteer firefighter Kevin Anderson said that's one of the scariest parts of the project: "the fact that we found that many people that can pull off weird."
