Jacksonville hires new fire chief with deep roots in town VIDEO: Paul Findley has joined the Jacksonville Fire Department for the second time, now as the chief. Tuesday night, the community was invited to a reception at the Public Safety Complex, the headquarters for both the fire and police departments in the city. Dozens showed up to support Chief Findley and congratulate him on the new job, one he says was entirely unexpected but an honor. Findley says he practically grew up in the old Jacksonville Fire Station, because his dad was a firefighter. He never imagined he would one day be the chief and emergency management coordinator for that same station. "I don't take it lightly, and I know what the expectations of me are for myself and that I'm accountable to them and to their families that we do this right," he says, adding that he has a goal to know the residents of Jacksonville by name to build trust and show them his passion and commitment to the job. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Multiple fire departments work to contain over 10K-acre marsh fire in south Jefferson County A stubborn marsh fire that has been burning in South Jefferson County for two weeks or more caused lots of problems over the last few days when the weather changed and kept the smoke hanging around low to the ground throughout the mornings. The H & H Fire is burning deep in the marsh west of Port Arthur and south of Texas Highway 73. The fire consists of two separate fires called the North Fire and the South Fire according to Texas A&M Forest Service Public Information Officer, Matthew Ford. The North Fire is estimated to be around 10,000 acres and started on October 14, 2023. The South Fire is around 1,200 acres and has been burning since October 22, 2023, according to Ford. On October 19, 2023 the "perfect storm" of weather factors came together to keep a layer of smoke and fog hugging the ground and floating across Texas Highway 73. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Jasper Fire Department membership numbers growing Jasper Fire Chief & Fire Marshal Brandon Duckworth reports good news for the department and for the citizens of Jasper. Duckworth said two of the new members are currently enrolled in the fire academy through Jasper High School. KJAS-FM 107.3 JASPER Austin Fire Department Station 1 to temporarily use downtown Travis County space The Austin Fire Department will temporarily move some firefighters into a Travis County office building while Fire Station 1 renovations continue. Fire Station 1, located at Fifth and Trinity streets, closed Oct. 13 because of renovations and some construction complications. Crews were moved to other stations in the city. Travis County commissioners approved an agreement to let AFD use space in the Ned Granger Building on 11th Street. The move will help with response times and keep firefighters in proximity to downtown Austin, Fire Chief Joel Baker told county commissioners Tuesday. Firefighters will move into the 11th Street space in one to two weeks, Baker said. About 15-20 people will be using the space at any given time, including some medic units. The space is on the first floor and about 7,200 square feet in size with a full kitchen. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Two charged with stealing 200-pound, historic New Jersey fire house bell PHOTO: Two men have been charged in the stealing of a historic bell that went missing from a South Jersey fire department last week. The Pleasantville Fire Department in Atlantic County asked for the public's help in a social media post last Tuesday after discovering that the historic artifact had gone missing. The bell — which measures 3 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds — had been stored in an alley behind the fire house as members of the department were preparing to create a memorial for it. Police arrested John Jordon II, 61, and Joseph Redd, 44, both of Pleasantville, on Monday after officers executed a search warrant and located a portion of the bell, according to a statement from the Pleasantville Police Department. NATIONAL TODAY New York City may turn to delivery apps like DoorDash to prevent e-bike battery fires Over the weekend, a fire involving lithium-ion batteries lit up a warehouse in Brooklyn where hundreds of e-bikes and other mobility devices were being stored. The New York City Council is now trying to tackle the problem from a different approach - by going after third-party delivery companies. As the crisis from lithium-ion battery fires continues to swell, officials say it's time delivery companies share responsibility. New legislation proposed by Council Member Oswald Feliz would require delivery apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub to provide safe and certified e-bikes to workers who don't have one. "These delivery companies have their biggest market right here in New York City and we've seen a lot of fire safety issues caused by these e-bikes. So, not fair for them to simply just turn a blind eye on the issues that are being caused," said Feliz. The customized golf cart is being given to the training facility by the family of Training Chief Ron Bender. Officials say Ron loved to golf after his retirement from the Portland Fire Bureau and customized his golf cart to resemble a fire engine, complete with ladders, axes, a siren, a bell, and few other unique elements "only a true firefighter could envision." The family says the golf cart is too special to sell and too special to sit, dust-covered in a corner. The decision was made to offer the golf cart to PF&R as a vehicle to assist Portland Fire & Rescue training staff. KATU-TV ABC 2 PORTLAND PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
