Mom, son killed in Crockett house fire A woman and her minor son have died following a house fire in Crockett. According to the Crockett Fire Department, around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, officials responded to a structure fire at 105 McLean Dr. When crews arrived on scene, they found the house was "heavily involved" in flames. "We rapidly began a search of the interior as well as an offensive attack to extinguish the fire," the CFD said. The CFD reports Shelly McDaniel, 44, and her minor son were found dead inside the home. The Latexo Volunteer Fire Department, Lovelady Volunteer Fire Department, Houston County Fire Marshal's Office, Crockett Police Department and Houston County EMS also responded to assist. At this time, the CFD has turned the investigation over to the State Fire Marshal's Office due to Crockett Fire Marshal being out on medical leave. KYTX-TV CBS 19 LONGVIEW Pflugerville Fire Department sees COVID-19 emergency calls hit pandemic high Hospitals are struggling to keep up with the surge of COVID-19 patients, and it's also putting a strain on first responders. The Pflugerville Fire Department has been starting its days with disaster response meetings for the past 18 months now. "We keep wondering when this will this stop. When do we get to stop doing this? But also, I think we've all become real comfortable with, this is just a part of our day now," said Nick Perkins, the assistant chief of the Pflugerville Fire Department. The department's ambulances are now responding to an average of five COVID-19 calls per day, which is the highest number they have seen throughout the pandemic. This is adding to their resources being stretched thin, especially their finances. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Longview burger shop shuts down temporarily after fire Longview firefighters were summoned to a burger shop where an oven caught fire. The Longview Fire Department responded to the call in the 4400 block of Gilmer Road shortly after noon on Tuesday. According to the LFD, an oven for cooking burgers caught fire. They were able to put it out with a water can in just a few minutes. Burger IM had to shut down for a brief period to be inspected by the health department and do some cleanup. There were no injuries reported. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Denton needs a new fire station near airport, officials say Denton Fire Station 8's opening earlier this year near Medical City Denton helped lighten the load on nearby Station 6. The Denton Fire Department hopes the future Station 9 will do the same for Station 5, but the creation of a new station in west Denton is still a few years away. A consultant previously told City Council members the city should build a fire station at Denton Enterprise Airport and plan for two more on the west side of the city for emergency responses for the industrial district as well as the future Hunter Ranch and Cole Ranch subdivisions. In a presentation to Denton City Council earlier this month, the Fire Department explained why the city would need a ninth fire station in the near future. Report: More than 70% of New York City firefighters in 9/11 response diagnosed with related health conditions More than 70% of New York City firefighters who responded to scenes following Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks have been diagnosed with 9/11 related physical or mental health conditions, according to a new report. The FDNY's report on the health impacts of rescue and recovery workers found that more than 11,300 members have been confirmed with at least one health condition covered by the World Trade Center Health Program, including asthma, cancers post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse disorder. According to the FDNY, 343 of its members died and nearly 16,000 members responded to the tragic events that day nearly two decades ago, as well as in the following 10 months in the recovery effort. Out of all the related health problems, more than 3,000 firefighters were diagnosed with at least one cancer, the report said. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK New training equipment in Virginia shows changing fire behavior VIDEO: The Charlottesville Fire Department has new equipment that can show changes in fire behavior as they happen. Training and EMS Captain Jess Rodzinka says this new training equipment is partially in response to a four percent jump in fires throughout the city, especially in the kitchen. There's been an 85 percent increase in cooking fires. "This will be able to show the newer firefighters, the younger firefighters, essentially how to understand flow-path, how to isolate doors, how to close the fire off, how to slow it down," he said. The box gives firefighters an overview of an incident they just couldn't get when they are inside a building, but it's not just for firefighters. Rodzinka says one safety tip at home before heading to bed could help prevent a bad scenario from getting worse. WCAV-TV CBS 19 CHARLOTTESVILLE Minnesota fire department speaks out amid rise in dangerous urban exploration incidents VIDEO: The growing vigil for 20-year-old Tiquann "T.J." Davis Jr., near St. Paul's Marshall Avenue bridge, is both a sad and frustrating reminder of what's at stake for the St. Paul Fire Department. "A tragedy occurred here and it's happened in the past," said Steve Sampson, Deputy Chief of Operations for the St. Paul Fire Department. "That is probably the hardest thing for us to grapple with, is the fact that this is preventable." Sampson says Davis and four other young adults were attempting to explore the storm sewer outfall that opens at the Mississippi River early Sunday morning, when a quick moving thunderstorm moved through and put their lives in immediate danger. KARE-TV NBC 11 MINNEAPOLIS Recalled Chevy Bolt bursts into flames in a California parking lot New footage of a burning Bolt EV added more fuel to Chevy's raging battery fire saga this week. Early Monday morning, 20-year-old Jesus Damian's 2017 Bolt EV burst into flames while sitting in a parking lot near his apartment in Sacramento, California. The all-electric vehicle was unplugged and off when the fire broke out. The fireball comes after Chevy expanded its recall of Bolts to include every model year earlier this month. The initial recall in November occurred after several reports of battery fires. GM blames battery-maker LG for manufacturing defects. A neighbor who witnessed fire crews putting out the flames sent over a quick video to Damian. The video was taken at 2 a.m. Monday.
