Travis County ESD No. 2 to unveil first-of-its-kind fire truck VIDEO: A first-of-its-kind fire truck in Central Texas is expected to make its debut in the upcoming weeks. Travis County ESD No. 2 is expected to unveil its new blocking apparatus built to save lives when firefighters are working incidents on major highways. What makes this new blocking apparatus unique is that the fire department chose to take the old and turn it into something new. "We came up with the concept that is not new in the country, but new to the Central Texas area," said Fire Chief Nick Perkins, Travis County ESD No. 2. Travis County ESD No.2, also known as the Pflugerville Fire Department, is taking a retired fire truck and repurposing it into a blocking apparatus. "We chose a fire truck because we didn't have a lot of funding to do this. So, we saw an opportunity to take a fire truck that we were going to take out of service because it's an older fire engine and it's not necessarily capable of frontline firefighting, but it can definitely still be driven," Chief Perkins said. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN First responders bike across the state to remember fallen comrades First responders from as far away as Massachusetts are in Dallas wearing a different uniform and not driving a fire truck or squad car. The group is part of what's called the Texas Brotherhood Riders, and their mission is to never forget. The ride is to remember first responders, police officers, firefighters and paramedics who lost their lives in 2021. "This year's ride started in Texarkana on Sunday," explained Rob Hyatt with the group. "We will finish in Houston on Friday. It's roughly six days and 500 miles." There were crossed ladders as the Texas Brotherhood Riders entered the Dallas Fire-Rescue training facility on Monday. The 500 grueling miles are to remember 32 Texas first responders who died in the line of duty. Grand Prairie Officer Andrew Macdonald was Nancy Macdonald's husband. She's grateful for the Texas Brotherhood. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Neighbor saves elderly man from structure fire in Amarillo The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a structure fire this morning near NW 15th. According to officials, the first unit on scene found a single story home with smoke coming out the open front door. When firefighters entered the home, they found a smoldering carpet fire that had filled the home with smoke. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire and cleared the house of smoke. There were no reported injuries. Officials say the homeowner was asleep at the time of the fire and the next door neighbor heard the smoke alarm going off when he went outside. The neighbor ran inside the house and got the elderly person out, who is in a wheelchair. The Fire Marshal says this fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. KDFA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Bryan Fire Department kicks off hazmat training series Bryan Fire Department kicked off their annual hazardous materials training at the Thompson Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility. Public Works offered their facility to BFD in order to be fully prepared for all facets of a hazardous situation. Lieutenant Jason Traeger said every part of this training series is meaningful to his team because they don't get to practice what to do in these circumstances often. "Today we had two things going on at the event. We have the hot zone which is where we are simulating a chlorine spill and chlorine leak. Afterwards, they come up here and do what we call a decon. They'll spray [themselves and the gear] and scrub down to make sure they get the hazardous material off," said Traeger. Bryan Fire Department said even though the training looks realistic, there is no danger to the public. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Families escape, cat dies, during San Antonio apartment fire Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that damaged or destroyed seven units at a North Side apartment complex. The fire broke out after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mediterranean Villas Apartments, sending residents of on building out into the street. Firefighters say it appears to have started in a second floor unit of the building, located in the 1500 block of Jackson-Keller Road. A woman told KSAT 12 News she lived in that apartment and has no idea what caused the fire. She said her smoke detectors did not work, but, thankfully, the smell of smoke woke her up. The woman and her family escaped safely, although she says her pet cat died in the fire. Firefighters said seven of the eight apartments in the building were left with damage from either the fire, smoke or water. In all, 15 people have been displaced, they said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO First responders plan 9.11 mile walk in Vidor to commemorate 21st anniversary of 9/11 Sunday will mark 21 years since the the 2001 terrorist attacks when hijackers took control of commercial planes in order to use them as missiles, crashing into New York's World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks by al-Qaida. The U.S. and its allies responded by launching the Afghanistan war. Southeast Texas firefighters plan to walk 9.11 miles Saturday, September 10 at Raymond Gould park in Vidor in memory of the first responders who gave their lives on 9/11. Their goal is for the community to feel what it's like to walk in their shoes. They're inviting people to either walk or gather to cheer people on. September 11 is an especially emotional day for first responders, who pause to remember the sacrifice many made that day to rescue those trapped high in the buildings and trapped in rubble. WZZM-TV ABC 13 GRAND RAPIDS Firefighter shares his 9/11 story ahead of 21st anniversary VIDEO: With less than a week until the 21st anniversary of Sept. 11, News 12's Greg Thompson sat down with a firefighter to speak about the memories he still has. James McCarthy remembers exactly where he was on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 – at home, on his day off. When he saw what happened, he drove to his ladder in Melrose, then headed to the World Trade Center. McCarthy says he and his fellow firefighters weren't concerned about time as they reached ground zero, and recalls spending weeks, and then months cutting and digging through the remains of the World Trade Center. "I wouldn't say anything has faded except for the raw emotion of it and the trauma of going down there," said McCarthy. NEWS 12 NEW JERSEY Four years after Ohio shooting, survivor reunites with first responders who saved her VIDEO: On the morning of Sept. 6, 2018, a man holding a 9 mm handgun walked into Fifth Third Center and opened fire. Omar Enrique Santa-Perez shot 35 rounds in four minutes and 28 seconds, killing three people and wounding two others. Cincinnati police arrived on scene almost immediately, and first responders did everything they could to help those shot. Four years after the shooting, survivor Whitney Austin said she constantly thinks about those who didn't make it home. "I get to be with my children, I get to be with my husband, I mean everyone I love — I've been given four bonus years," Austin said. "But on the flip side of that, I think about those who lost their lives on this day and how their family members have an entirely opposite experience."
