Fire reported at recycling plant in Houston Arson investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at a recycling facility in east Houston late Tuesday. The fire was reported at Derichebourg Recycling USA along Wallisville Road near Wayside Drive at about 10:15 p.m. When it first broke out, plumes of smoke and an orange glow could be seen in the sky. Houston firefighters arrived within minutes, but they said they had trouble getting access to the facility and to the water supply. They had to run about a thousand feet of hose to get water on the fire. It's believed most of the material in the area that burned was scrap metal. HFD hazmat crews monitored the air quality but did not find any reason for alarm in the surrounding community. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Frisco firefighters, Texas A&M Taskforce 1 team returns home from Louisiana The state of Louisiana is still reeling a week later after Hurricane Ida left a trail of devastation. Danny Watkins of the Frisco Fire Department is part of a large contingent representing Texas A&M Taskforce 1. Watkins, a rescue specialist, teamed up with a hazardous materials and logistics specialist from Frisco to help our neighbors to the east. They left a couple days before Ida made landfall. "You got down there and it was just total devastation in parts of these communities," said Danny Watkins. It is often assumed that the aftermath means the worst is behind us. That does not appear to be the case for Louisiana. Basic needs for survival can be seen in long lines for gas and food and also in the piece-by-piece salvaging of homes ripped apart. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Funeral held for Austin firefighter who lost battle with COVID Family, friends, and fellow firefighters were able to say their last goodbyes to Firefighter Rodney "Rod" Kelley Tuesday afternoon after he lost his battle with COVID-19. A funeral was held at the Coker United Methodist Church in San Antonio to remember Kelley. He contracted COVID-19 while on the job. Austin Fire Association President Bob Nicks says Kelley spent 15 long days on a ventilator before he passed away in late August. "Rod's death is a line of duty death and that means something. He came to work to serve the citizens he loved. He came to work that day to perform the job he loved, and he contracted the disease while on duty," said Nicks. One-by-one those who knew Kelley reminisced on the good times with him. Some tears were shed, but so was laughter. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Reno Breathe Bar offering oxygen naps to firefighters VIDEO: Reno Breathe Bar in Midtown is offering oxygen naps for firefighters in Northern Nevada. It's a way for the business to say thank you to those battling the fires in our area. "I just really want to make sure the families and friends of these firefighters know we are open for them whenever we can get them in," said Amy Burkett, owner of the Breathe Bar. Burkett says she has two firefighters scheduled. All you need is proof you're a firefighter to get an oxygen nap. She says the ambiance at the Breathe Bar could help just as much as the oxygen. "Oxygen is going to help them, but I think more than anything the rest, Burkett says. "If they want to come in and lay here for an hour, I would even let them take an hour nap. I know that these guys and women are tired. They've been working a lot." KOLO-TV ABC/CW+ 8 RENO Nearly 2 decades after 9/11, a former firefighter sees the NYC memorial for the first time VIDEO: Michael Silvestri dipped his fingers into the flowing water and made the sign of the cross, from his forehead to his broken heart. The waters here, in the South Pool of New York City's 9/11 Memorial, are like holy water, he said. "It's sacred. It's their graves," Silvestri said. His cross was also a silent prayer for the strength he needed to stand at this memorial for the first time. Faith had helped Silvestri, now 59, get this far. The former firefighter survived 9/11 two decades ago, but he's been fighting for his life ever since. Silvestri moved to Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, more than a decade ago to get away from all the reminders on Staten Island. He was haunted by painful memories, undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and the survivor's guilt that devoured him alive. It culminated in 10 seconds of rage 16 months after 9/11 that nearly cost him everything, followed by years of the slow path toward healing, the hard work of turning survival to rebirth. ERIE TIMES-NEWS - METERED SITE Toxic firefighting foams; a challenge for Massachusetts to quickly replace Fire departments across Massachusetts face a "daunting" task in replacing the foams they use to fight fires caused by fuels or other flammable liquids, one chief told a task force mulling ways the state can address contamination by a class of chemicals known as PFAS. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of long-lasting, man-made chemicals used for decades in consumer products like non-stick coating and in certain firefighting foams. Probing issues around where PFAS contamination in Massachusetts comes from and who should bear responsibility for cleaning it up, the panel heard Tuesday from state Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey and fire chiefs Peter Burke of Hyannis and John Dearborn of Longmeadow. Last year's state budget created the PFAS Interagency Task Force, led by House Speaker Pro Tempore Kate Hogan and Sen. Julian Cyr, to study PFAS contamination, exposure pathways and mitigation strategies. WWLP-TV NBC/CW+ 22 SPRINGFIELD New Studies Find Evidence Of 'Superhuman' Immunity To COVID-19 In Some Individuals Some scientists have called it "superhuman immunity" or "bulletproof." But immunologist Shane Crotty prefers "hybrid immunity." "Overall, hybrid immunity to SARS-CoV-2 appears to be impressively potent," Crotty wrote in commentary in Science back in June. No matter what you call it, this type of immunity offers much needed good news in what seems like an endless array of bad news regarding COVID-19. Over the past several months, a series of studies has found that some people mount an extraordinarily powerful immune response against SARS-CoV-2. Their bodies produce very high levels of antibodies, but they also make antibodies with great flexibility — likely capable of fighting off the variants of coronavirus circulating in the world but also likely effective against variants that may emerge in the future.
