Paul Findley named fire chief for City of Jacksonville The City of Jacksonville on Wednesday announced Paul Findley as the incoming fire chief and director of emergency management. Findley was named the Smith County fire marshal in July and on Tuesday, the commissioners court announced his resignation after an executive session. Prior to serving Smith County, Findley worked as the City of Tyler fire marshal and public information officer. Findley's resignation will be effective Sept. 19, the commissioners court said. Findley's return to the Jacksonville Fire Department follows a 20-plus year career with the City of Tyler Fire Department where he most recently served as the fire marshal and department public information officer. Findley got his start in fire service with the Jacksonville Fire Department where he worked from 1994 to 1998. DENTON RECORD-CHRONICLE San Antonio Fire Department responding to more vacant structure fires Six months after a house fire and getting back on their feet, Maria Lozano and her family are facing homelessness again. "They said nothing survived — no apartments, and we lost everything," Lozano said. Their new home is gone. A fire in the vacant house next door spread after being carried by the winds of a tropical storm. "Fast, it burned fast," Lozano said. A month earlier, in July, Victor Villarreal feared a similar fate. "The fire department shows up, and next thing you know, that house was fully engulfed. Man, they couldn't do nothing about it," said Villarreal, who lives near several vacant homes. A massive fire in a vacant two-story home on West Poplar was too close for comfort. "It's been going on. I was here three months ago. They burned the house next door," Villarreal said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Amarillo Fire Department preparing for expected active wildfire season The Amarillo Fire Department is expecting an active wildfire season. Many may associate hot temperatures with wildfires, however the fire department says they're not only a summertime event and it expects red flag conditions in the coming months. "Red flag is a very critical warning put out by the National Weather Service, what the Red Flag Warning is in a sense is an early indicator of weather conditions that would be favorable to start or continue to fuel a wildfire," said Max Dunlap, director, Office of Emergency Management. Those conditions include low humidity, dry vegetation and strong winds. "The winds of change coming, October is going to be here very soon, that's historically a very windy month here and the winds of change that will definitely fuel the grass fires, they move very fast, it's blowing 50 mph the typical grass fire the way it moves, but the embers can be going 70 mph," said Cpt. Jeremy Hill, pio, Amarillo Fire Department. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Texas enlists out-of-state volunteers to combat wildfires The first thing Wil Kitchenges saw when he reached Huntsville was a plume of smoke drifting across Interstate 45. The 46-year-old field operations chief was part of a team of first responders from the Florida Forest Service, called upon to help manage a rapidly spreading forest fire in Walker County, about 75 miles north of Houston. Kitchenges, who has 25 years of disaster management experience in Florida, knew immediately that this wildfire was major. "Your brain starts to gather that, OK, the fire activity is obviously extreme," Kitchenges said. For several days in late August, Kitchenges along with a team of more than 100 local and state emergency responders worked to contain the Game Preserve Fire, which covered an estimated 4,428 acres in Walker County and forced dozens of people to evacuate their homes KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Roof collapses after large building fire in downtown Los Angeles Crews in downtown Los Angeles are battling a massive structure fire Tuesday that's already collapsed the building's roof. The fire broke out just after 1 p.m. at a building in the 300 block of E. 4th Street. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the building is approximately three stories, with a basement. Early images from SkyFOX showed portions of the roof near the back of the building had apparently collapsed. Smoke was also billowing out of the front windows of the building while crews fought the fire from outside and above. About an hour later, most of the roof had collapsed. According to the LAFD, the fire broke out on the third floor of the building in "dense storage." Crews initially tried fighting the fire from inside the building, before removing all firefighters from the building and fighting it from the outside. KTTV FOX 11 LOS ANGELES Ohio drone team keeps first responders safe, citizens safer VIDEO: For first responders, an eye in the sky or a canary in the coal mine could mean the difference between life and death. Units like the Lake County Public Safety Unmanned Response or Drone Team provide just such a service, venturing ahead and providing a first look or acting as a guide on traitorous calls. "It's grown, all of the ways that we could use these aircraft, honestly, to protect our people and, more importantly, serve the public," said officer in charge of the team, Scott Mlakar. "A drone is a lot more cost-effective and a lot more effective because we can fly it at lower altitudes." The 24-person unit, composed of police officers and firefighters, runs through nearly a month of studying to prepare for a licensing exam before the work begins on training to fly the drones. WOIO-TV CBS 19 SHAKER HEIGHTS Latest exhibit at Sigal Museum traces history of firefighting in one Pennsylvania county The latest installation coming to the Sigal Museum is going to be about more than just hoses and firetrucks. "Even if you think you know the story of firefighting, there will be something here to surprise you," said the museum's curator of exhibitions, Tim Betz. The exhibit titled "Forged by Fire: The Heroism, Honor and History of Firefighting," is scheduled to open to the public on Sept. 21 and will explore the roots of local fire prevention and response dating as far back as the Great Fire of London in 1666, Betz said. "It's about firefighters from the 18th century to the present and the ways communities worked to ensure that their towns and people in them were protected from fires," he said. The exhibit will run through July 7, 2024, the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society that runs the Sigal Museum said in a news release Tuesday. LEHIGH VALLEY LIVE Wisconsin fire chief settles wager by washing ladder truck VIDEO/PHOTOS: Each year, Merrill and Antigo High School Football compete for a ‘War on 64' trophy but the rivalry goes far deeper. Merrill Fire Department Chief Josh Klug grew up in Merrill, but has connections in the Antigo Fire Department. Prior to this year's game Chief Klug called up one of his friends and former colleagues, Antigo Fire Chief Corey Smith. Smith said, "I was very happy to accept that bet." He continued, "I think it's just too small close-knit communities that are relatively close to one another and good fun spirited rivalry with high school sports." The two made a bet that the losing team's fire department chief would have to wash a truck of the winning team's department. Antigo ended up pulling out the victory, and Chief Klug had a new Monday morning task. WJFW-TV NBC 12 RHINELANDER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
