Nacogdoches County house fire claims life of woman The Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office says that an Etoile woman died in an early morning house fire on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Deputies and the Etoile Volunteer Fire Department were called to the 700 block of Cr. 559 at 4:25 a.m. in reference to the fire. Two women were inside the mobile home that caught fire. One had woken up to the smell of spoke. The owner of the residence was handicapped and in a wheelchair. She was able to make it out of the west end of the residence. She then called for help from two nearby neighbors. The neighbors attempted to enter a door to the residence but the fire was too hot and drove them back. They went to the east side of the residence where the victim, Sarah Elise Moore, 57, was still inside a bedroom. KYTX-TV CBS 19 NACOGDOCHES Wichita Falls Fire Department help fellow firefighter's wife see him through hospital window as he battles COVID-19 A Wichita Falls firefighter is in the hospital fighting COVID-19 so his fellow firefighters did something special for his family. Right now the firefighter can't have visitors but that didn't stop his station from coming up with a plan. They decided to bring a ladder down to the hospital to lift up their fellow firefighter's wife to his hospital window so that the two could finally see each other. Fire Chief Ken Prillaman says he knows the gesture from the station, meant the world to the family. "She was overwhelmed with the amount of support and this is one of those things that we talk about, supporting each other, looking out for each other but when it comes down to it, it's a bit surreal. These guys are incredible about supporting each other and their families, Prillaman said. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE McAllen Fire Department holds push-back ceremony, adds new fire truck The McAllen Fire Department held a push-back ceremony on Tuesday for its most recent addition—engine number five. The fire truck is equipped with a 300-gallon water tank and a telescoping aerial platform 100 feet tall. The truck is equipped with a 2,000 gallons per minute water pump and specialized vehicle rescue equipment. Push-back ceremonies are a fire department tradition back to when firefighters used horses. Fire Chief Jim Schultz said that before there were engines fire departments used horses to pull a fire apparatus to fires. "When the apparatus came to the station after a call- the firefighters instead of trying to back up an apparatus a fire apparatus with horses attached, they would detach the horses and push the apparatus back in by hand," Schultz said. KVEO-TV NBC 23 BROWNSVILLE VIDEO: Fiery 18-Wheeler Crash Closes Interstate 35E in Lewisville An 18-wheeler crashed and caught fire along Interstate 35E in Lewisville early Tuesday morning, leaving a mess of debris firefighters say could take hours to clear. It happened before 5 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate at the exit for Texas 121. The Lewisville Fire Department wrote on social media that it appeared the big rig crashed into a barrier wall, with the impact shearing the axles off the truck and its trailer. Debris was sent flying across all lanes of the highway and exit ramp, firefighters said. The condition of the driver was not immediately known. Firefighters said there were no fatalities. A hazardous materials crew was sent to clean spilled fuel off the highway and exit ramp. Firefighters said lane closures are expected to last through the day, until approximately 5 p.m. Drivers are asked to avoid the area. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Wichita Falls High School Student Council honors First Responders Members of the Rider High School Student Council gave thanks to first responders in remembrance of 9/11 Monday afternoon. Their first stop was at Fire Station 6, just down the street from their school. The firefighters were out on a call at the time, so the group headed down to the Wichita Falls Police Department and would circle back by the fire station later. "Lead, Encourage, Serve is their mission statement this year. Leaders on campus, leading as students and encouraging the other students to one, be a part of school stuff and show school spirit, and be a part of and out in the community," said Annaliese Murray, teacher and Student Council sponsor. She added, "Today we just wanted to show appreciation to First Responders in remembrance of 9/11, with the 20-year anniversary. They made posters and cards and we're just going to deliver those to the fire station and police station with cookies and brownies, just a little treat to say, 'thank you.'" VIDEO: Fire destroys dozens of cars at Indiana auto yard Firefighters say more than three dozen cars caught fire Wednesday morning at a south side business. Crews used tanker trucks to bring water deep into the auto yard. Once the water supply was established, crews had the fire under control in about 40 minutes. Indianapolis Fire Department crews were dispatched around 1:45 a.m. to Insurance Auto Auctions located at 3202 S. Harding St. IFD found about 40 cars on fire when crews arrived at the location. Heavy fire destroyed the cars, IFD said. No injuries were reported. The fire remains under investigation. IFD said the company was looking into the possibility that a lightning strike from thunderstorms overnight may have started the fire. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS As Wildfires Burn, Are U.S. Cities Spending Too Much on Their Fire Departments? It may sound surprising in an era characterized by increasingly destructive wildfires, but Stephen Jellie just spent the past year trying to get rid of firefighters. Jellie is the fire chief and city manager of Ogdensburg, N.Y., a town on the Canadian border that's small and getting smaller—10,064 lived there in April 2020, down from 12,375 in 1980. The city kept raising taxes to try to save itself from financial distress, but costs were spiraling out of control. "We let it creep—we just kept putting resources into public safety," he told me. "But you can't run a city with just a fire department and a police department." Ogdensburg isn't unusual in cities and towns across the U.S.—even as the number of home fires has fallen significantly over the past few decades, spending on municipal fire departments has skyrocketed. TIME - METERED SITE Oklahoma firefighters rescue country superstar Reba McEntire from second-story window after stairs collapse VIDEO: A close call for a Texoma country superstar, Reba McEntire, had to be evacuated on a fire ladder from a second-story window Tuesday afternoon. "Oh it was pretty scary, I was worried about who was downstairs and how bad it was," Coby Scherrill said. Scherrill was touring an historic building downtown Atoka Tuesday afternoon with Reba McEntire for a future project. "We were just touring the building and the stairwell was weak it seemed weak but we did not realize how weak it was until several people had gone down it and then we heard the crash and saw the stairs fall," Scherrill says. City of Atoka Emergency Management Director, Travis Mullins, said the stairwell from the second story to the third collapsed, falling onto the stairwell from the first to the second floor, and trapping people on whatever floor they were on at the time. KXII-TV CBS/FOX 12 SHERMAN Pennsylvania township to donate fire engine to tornado-ravaged Alabama fire department The Whitehall Township Bureau of Fire will donate a retired fire engine to a volunteer fire company in central eastern Alabama ravaged last spring by a tornado. The Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the donation at its Monday night meeting. According to Whitehall Fire Chief David Nelson, the 1990 Mack special edition fire engine placed out of service three years ago will be transported to the Shinbone Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Delta, Alabama. The department lost all of its firefighting equipment due to a sudden and severe tornado which raised the fire station to the ground. Nelson said the engine, which at municipal auction would net Whitehall about $4,000, would be put to a better and more appreciated use down South as opposed to becoming a showpiece here in the Lehigh Valley.
