2 firefighters injured in Dallas apartment explosion return to work 1 year later VIDEO: Two of the three firefighters critically injured in an apartment gas explosion in Southeast Oak Cliff returned to work on Tuesday. They managed to make the return two days before the one-year anniversary of the explosion. One year ago on Thursday, Cpt. Christopher Gadomski, Ron Hall and Pauline Perez were investigating a gas leak at Highland Hills Apartments in Southeast Oak Cliff. Hall was a driver engineer for Dallas Fire-Rescue. He says he was about to evacuate when he saw fellow firefighter Perez enter the unit where the leak was detected. "I was like I've got to get her out of that apartment. As soon as I stepped in, it blew," Hall recalled. Dallas police charged Phillip Dankins with firing a gun into that apartment hours before the explosion on Sept. 29, 2021. Police reports say a bullet hit a stove and cut a gas line. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS 'It's simply unacceptable,' Houston Fire Department Chief says on recent attacks on first responders VIDEO: Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena spoke with FOX 26 to address what he's calling an unsettling trend, an increase in attacks and assault on first responders. "It's simply unacceptable," says Chief Pena. Pena spoke about the unsettling trend fire chiefs are seeing locally and nationally; first responders, firefighters, and paramedics are being assaulted while on the scene of an accident. "It's definitely a hazard, it's a disturbing trend," said Pena. The chief tweeted out this week about an incident that took place on Sunday. We're told a crew member was physically attacked while he was working a motor vehicle accident. We've learned that bystanders at the scene started to verbally assault and attack one of the parties involved in the vehicle accident. From there, the chief says, it escalated into a physical attack on one of their firefighters. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON New 'blocking trailer' is protecting Carrollton first responders VIDEO: A busy highway can be a scary place to stand. "When you're working a scene, you feel the wind from the mirror of a car on your arm, going 70 miles an hour. It's very unnerving," said Carrollton Fire Chief Michael Thomson. In the past, his department has used fire engines as barriers to protect emergency crews, but when they get hit, it can take more than a year and a lot of money to fix. So, Carrollton Fire Rescue came up with a new idea – collaborating with a private company to create a first of its kind mobile barrier specifically for emergency response. Stretching 68 feet from bumper to bumper, the cab and trailer can easily be positioned in front of a scene where emergency responders are at work. Carrollton is already dispatching the unit to every crash on the highway. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Austin firefighters join Texas A&M Task Force 1 for Hurricane Ian search and rescue As Hurricane Ian barrels toward Florida, first responders in Texas are packing up and heading east. The Texas A&M Task Force 1 team deploying this week includes four firefighters from Austin. They are one of several teams FEMA is calling on to respond to Hurricane Ian‘s aftermath. Tuesday they were loading up and heading out with plans to preposition just west of the storm. After it hits, they will head into the disaster area to help locals. "All of the people going out with this team have been doing this for quite some time. They're expecting wind damage and a lot of flooding. This is going to be a heavy rain event," says Jeff Saunders, director for Texas A&M Task Force 1. Saunders says they're taking with them two semi-trucks and rider trucks full of equipment as well as six boats. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN No injuries reported after huge fire at tire shop in west Houston VIDEO: Houston firefighters worked to put out a big fire in west Houston on Tuesday that canceled outdoor activities at a nearby school. It happened at a business in the 3400 block of Fondren near Pagewood in southwest Houston. The owner said it's a tire shop and everyone inside made it out safely. A bunch of tires burned at the shop next door to O'Reilly Auto Parts. Thick black smoke could be seen for miles and drivers were advised to avoid the area, HFD said. There have been no reports of civilian or firefighter injuries, according to HFD. The fire started around 11:30 a.m. HFD is still investigating the cause of the fire, but said they believe it may have started when some welding sparked flammable material. According to HFD, the building and all the cars in it are a total loss. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Firefighters, bulldozers battle fire at recycling facility in Vidor VIDEO: Emergency crews worked and successfully made sure a fire that started at a recycling facility does not spread. It happened at the J-3 Metals Recycling Center, which is inside the county line. The Jasper County Sheriff's Office got the call a little after 11 a.m. about a "very large trash fire." Employees were able to leave the facility before firefighters arrived. Orange County Emergency Services District #1 Chief Robert Smith, whose department was called to assist, believes a large pile of trash was burning out the facility when it got out of hand. Evadale Fire, Kirbyville Fire, Buna Fire, Forestry Service and Roganville Fire Departments all responded. The Forestry Service brought in bulldozers to help put out the fire. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Washington fire station temporarily inoperable after $90K in lifesaving equipment stolen PHOTOS: Grays Harbor Fire District 1 Station 2 has been temporarily put out of service after $90,000 in lifesaving equipment was stolen Tuesday morning. Police were called at 6 a.m. to the fire station located at 1880 South Bank Road for an overnight burglary. Officials said thieves stole equipment such as defibrillators, jaws of life, radios and more from a tender, fire engine, and an ambulance. The station is expected to be out of service until the equipment can be found or replaced, fire officials said. The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help in identifying anyone involved in the theft. KIRO-TV CBS 7 SEATTLE Michigan firefighters combat cancer with shirts, hats and mustaches In addition to battling blazes, Dearborn Heights firefighters are hard at work these days trying to snuff out something that hits very close to home for them – cancer. The department has embraced a "Movember" fundraising campaign that encourages mustache growth to raise awareness of men's health issues. Firefighters are selling shirts and hats emblazoned with a specially-designed logo featuring caricatures of two members of Dearborn Heights Professional Firefighters Union Local 1355. One of those faces belongs to Lt. James Ursitti. He said the decision to put down their razors and electric shavers was an easy one. "Cancer rates for firefighters are extremely high when compared to the general public," he said. PRESS & GUIDE - METERED SITE Retired Ohio firefighter benefitting from new device to help chronic knee pain VIDEO/PHOTOS: Chuck Stenger loved being a firefighter in New Albany. But after serving for more than 30 years, his career was cut short by his knee. "Started noticing trouble with climbing a ladder, went to an orthopedic doc and was getting shots of cortisone," Stenger said. One day, the pain was so bad Stenger said he fell over while helping a patient. "It made the career a lot shorter than I wanted it to be," he said. Stenger answered an online survey about knee pain and then go a phone call. He was skeptical until he learned it was OSU Wexner Medical Center calling. Dr. David Flanigan offered Stenger a spot in a clinical trial for a new device. "This is truly, if you can imagine, just like you would see in a car, a shock absorber," Flanigan said. The device is implanted in the knee to help those with moderate arthritis. WSYX-TV FOX 28 COLUMBUS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
