| Biden on school shooting: 'The Lord is near to the brokenhearted' | Curated for you byCP Editors | Good afternoon. It's Wednesday, May 25, and today's headlines include President Joe Biden's response to Tuesday's mass shooting at a Texas elementary school, details on the ways abortion clinics have disposed of aborted baby parts, and the Southern Baptist Convention's commitment to making its database of sexual abusers public. | Nineteen students and two teachers were killed in a mass shooting in Texas on Tuesday. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott identified the shooter as Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old student at Uvalde High School, who was shot and killed at the scene. During a press conference Tuesday evening, President Joe Biden addressed the school shooting and the tragedy of a parent losing a child. He also placed blame on the gun lobby and gun manufacturers for school shootings. "To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away," said Biden, who himself has lost two children, one to a car accident in 1972 and another to cancer in 2015. Biden quoted Psalm 34:18, saying, "The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit," and asked people to pray for the victims' families. He then called for stricter gun laws, questioning, "When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?" Read more. | Meanwhile, Rev. Y.J. Jimenez of First Baptist Church in Bracketville was in the waiting room at Uvalde Memorial Hospital on Tuesday offering support to family members of shooting victims. He told The New York Times that two of his parishioners lost their grandchild and he had never had to deal with such grief in his 30 years of ministry. "Sometimes it’s about the presence and the prayers. In times like these all you can do is cry," he said. | | From sales to freezers: 5 'gruesome' ways abortion clinics dispose of aborted baby parts | During a House Judiciary Committee hearing on abortion on Wednesday, Alabama abortionist Dr. Yashica Robinson declined to directly answer a question from Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, about how she discards or stores aborted human remains. Robinson, who said she has performed abortions as late as 20 weeks into a pregnancy, accused Roy of using "inflammatory language." The congressman also inquired about a 2015 video showing a Planned Parenthood executive in Houston discussing the purchase of fetal tissue, which is a federal crime. Roy also pressed Robinson about reports of abortion facilities storing remains in freezers or Pyrex dishes. The Charlotte Lozier Institute's Tessa Longbons notes there have been multiple cases involving abortion facilities violating or stretching the law to dispose of aborted human remains. Her body was discovered last Wednesday when law enforcement responded to a homicide call. Police reportedly arrested Griggs the next day. "Marita was a friend and a shining light among us ... I am grateful that the Lord she represented so well was with her in all things and accompanied her to her eternal home. May His Spirit comfort those of us who remain," Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church said. During a meeting to discuss Guidepost Solutions' investigation report on Tuesday, SBC Executive Committee Chairman Roland Slade stated that now was not the time for "inaction," asserting, "Now that we know, we need to do better." | | 'Why did this happen?' Thoughts on the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary School | Pastor Greg Laurie writes about Tuesday's horrific school shooting and addresses the biggest question at hand: Why did this happen? "The heart of America was ripped out this sad day. This is every parent's worst nightmare and our hearts are all breaking, but none are feeling the pain that those families who lost their precious loved ones are experiencing right now. This is a moment where we all should 'Weep with those that weep' (Rom.12:15). At a time like this, we all collectively ask, 'Why?' Why did God allow this to happen? The simple answer is, I don't know." Pointing to the core issues they fail to address, Green says it is a corrupt organization "hellbent on its supreme goal of power," which they are willing to obtain by means of "violence, intimidation, or some other tactic." Green notes the organization gains money and power by "continuing to pull race and oppression cards," concluding, "As a society, the next time an organization starts rising up, before supporting it and chanting their mantras and hashtags and giving them money, find out what they actually do and what they actually stand for." | | How the Church is to Hear from God | Some Christians don’t know the Bible nor what to believe because they aren’t learning it in their churches. As a result, many have turned inward to "hear from God." However, much of what people are "hearing" is not Christian at all. Instead, they formulate their own personal interpretation of the Bible and their version of spiritual truth. What makes matters worse is that the untaught church is elevating teachers who do the same! The result is that many in the church today hold beliefs that directly contradict both the Bible and orthodoxy. As a seminary professor, I challenge seminary graduates to be part of the solution... | | Nancy Pelosi condemns archbishop who banned her from eucharist | U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who reportedly took communion at a Catholic church in Washington, D.C., Sunday, spoke out Tuesday after Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco barred her from receiving communion in the California city. Pelosi questioned why the archbishop hadn't taken similar stances on other issues that violate church teachings. "I wonder about the death penalty, which I am opposed to. So is the church, but they take no action against people who may not share their view." Pelosi's continued endorsement of policies advancing abortion access conflicts with the teachings of the Catholic Church. The church has "affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion" since the first century. Continue reading. |
