Shanah Tovah, Reader! Growing up in an interracial, interreligious family on Chicago’s Near North Side, I did not have a particularly religious childhood. Yet it was a Jewish one. When I was asked to take tickets on Rosh Hashanah at the local movie theater where I worked in 1973, the synagogue community was surprised to learn that I, too, couldn’t tear paper on the holiday. “I’m Jewish, too.” It was an answer that they weren’t expecting, but one that is central to who I am and the communities that I belong to. Today, I’m passionate about sharing with Forward readers stories of my own experiences and those of other Jews of Color that accurately reflect the richness and diversity of the American Jewish community. At this introspective and meaningful time of year, I hope you’ll join me in showing your appreciation for our storied publication with a sustaining gift to support inclusive Jewish journalism. |
