Dear John,
According to *JobSage in the past 2 years, 28% of people have quit their job because of mental health.
28%
1 in 4 people!
Has this impacted you? Gallup estimates that employee replacement costs on average range from 50% to 200% of salary when you factor in recruiting, overtime, onboarding, training, ramp up, lost productivity and opportunity. How many did you lose? Do the math.
The JobSage survey goes deeper and sites these as the three top reasons under mental health that people quit:
- Stress - 55%
- Depression - 38%
- Lack of motivation - 37%
The Problem reveals the Opportunity
The effective leader, what I call the Coach Leader, understands that these problems were set in motion because of the disruption and domino effect of the pandemic and can become opportunities when approached correctly.
Breaking it down
Stress - or burnout, is a result of overwhelming change combined with an uncertain environment and the blurring of boundaries between the personal and professional life. Coach Leaders know that the answer to this is helping those on their team create work/life balance with the goal being overall quality of life. Good mental health depends on all 7 areas of life being strong: Mental, Spiritual, Physical, Family, Financial, Personal, and Career. If any of these areas are suffering then so will mental health.
Depression - as my good friend Rabbi Daniel Lapin says, “The opposite of depression is not happiness. The opposite of depression is purpose.” People are depressed not only because of stress, but because they don’t see purpose in what they are doing. Coach Leaders constantly share the mission and vision of the company (purpose) and then proactively engage each team member to discover what their bigger personal purpose is (what they are working towards besides just the paycheck.) When people have a bigger cause to work for, that also takes them closer to their own purpose in the process, and the byproduct is happiness.
Lack of motivation - one of the primary factors in self-motivation is having clearly defined goals and personal/professional growth plans to get there, and then taking action. Coach Leaders know that when they help guide their team members to create goals based on the team members' bigger purpose and dream, the team member now works for a dream and not a paycheck.
The #1 Business Problem/Opportunity Today is this:
Attracting, developing, and keeping Top Performers.
Top Performers are looking for Coach Leaders who:
- Believe in Work/Life balance and focus on Quality of Life
- Connect the Vision and Mission of the company with their higher purpose
- See and create a bright future for them in the business by co-creating personal and professional growth and goals plans with them
When Coach Leaders do these three things they not only attract, develop, and keep Top Performers but they also reduce stress, depression, and lack of motivation.
Become a Coach Leader!
