| Good evening, Today the sunny spring weather has been at odds with the grim news from Ukraine. But in an increasingly toxic landscape on social media where humans are cruel to other humans on a day-to-day basis, it is perhaps reassuring that in a time of conflict the acts of kindness are louder than the cruel acts of war. Despite the unthinkable acts of violence and disregard for human life being deployed in the pursuit of land and power by Putin and his followers, it is the people’s voices and pleas in Ukraine and in support of Ukraine that resonate the loudest as generations not used to war - if not terror - witness horror unfolding in a Westernised country where people were just living their lives. The invasion is perhaps less surprising to Ukrainians well used to the malevolent presence of Russia on their border. It was a relatively new independence and still a delicate one - it’s not a country that took anything for granted and was still battling the far-reaching demons of corruption and Russian power/old KGB interference. That does not make this horrific situation any easier to stomach, because as always it is the innocents who suffer in a battle over power. We stand with Ukraine. Nicola nicola.adam@jpimedia.co.uk | |
