I remember being at a church dinner where I was called upon to bless the meal. I wasn’t ready. There were about 100 people present and I froze. Halfway through my prayer I paused for an uncomfortably long time—then started rambling. I prayed for the weather, the economy, hurting children—everything except what I had been asked to pray for: the food.
I can chuckle at the memory now (it was a while ago) but it taught me an important lesson. Public prayer is tricky. You’re petitioning God, not only for yourself, but on behalf of others too. And it’s important to do it well. That’s why we created an entire resource about it. Leading a Group in Prayer. This 23-page collection of articles is designed to help anyone who
ever facilitates a time of group prayer--for three people or 100. Glean valuable insights for helping everyone participate, in a way that is genuine, edifying, and God-honoring.
Speaking of prayer, I enjoyed this review of a new book on the subject. The main takeaway of the book (and the review) is that God doesn’t mind us asking, even when we do it again and again and again.
