“Don’t thank me; it was all you.”
These were the words that came from a coach after one of her basketball players had just thanked her for helping her win the game. I realized in that moment, the attitude of the coach’s heart radiated humility. She could have been prideful and congratulated herself; however, she turned the attention to whom she knew deserved it most.
John the Baptist had the same heart attitude. A man of greatness in the eyes of God, had a heart full of humility. He placed himself so low so that Christ could be so high. He gave all credit, authority, and praise to God. He plainly spoke that he was not the Messiah; he was simply preparing the way for Him. He knew he was not the way to salvation, only Jesus alone.
I often picture John as one who helps passengers aboard a boat. John prepares them for their journey, helps them get on, and assists them before the boat departs. This boat’s destination? Salvation. The captain? God. The vessel? Jesus. The help? John.
And yet, John is the happiest of all.
Jesus is the way to God. He is the vessel to our salvation.
