The Battle Between Fang & Bang

Michael Oliver and Patrick Highsmith of Timberline Resources return as guests this week.

This week’s episode title was taken from a recent short article written by Jesse Felder who writes “The Felder Report, Taking the Financial Road Less Traveled.” Almost five years ago, he wrote a blog post titled, “BANG: Why the Gold Miners Could Soon Make FANG Look Tame.” Upon request from a reader, Jesse updated that article with several charts that make the point that the FANG stocks (Meta, Amazon, Netflix and Google) are extremely overvalued while the BANG stocks (Barrick Gold, Agnico Eagle and Newmont) are undervalued. However, that is changing.

Clearly, there has been some back and forth between these two with the BANG stocks taking the lead and holding it over the past year or so. But the relatively better performance of these senior gold stocks has been a stealth move. I have seldom seen so little interest in gold shares, especially those small cap companies that are making gigantic gold and silver discoveries.

Michael will be asked to comment on his views on the BANG and FANG stocks and Patrick will update us on one of those small cap exploration companies that appears to be on the verge of significant gold and silver discoveries in Nevada.

J. Michael Oliver entered the financial services industry in 1975 on the Futures side, joining E.F. Hutton’s International Commodity Division, NYC. He studied under David Johnson, head of Hutton’s Commodity Division and Chairman of the COMEX.

In the 1980’s Oliver began to develop his own momentum-based method of technical analysis. In 1987 Oliver, along with his futures client accounts (Oliver had trading POA) technically anticipated and captured the Crash. Oliver began to realize that his emergent momentum-structural-based tools should be further developed into a full analytic methodology.

In 1992 he was asked by the Financial VP and head of Wachovia Bank’s Trust Department to provide soft dollar research to Wachovia. Within a year Oliver shifted from brokerage to full-time technical research. MSA has provided its proprietary technical research services to financial and asset management clients continually since 1992. Oliver is the author of The New Libertarianism: Anarcho-Capitalism.

Patrick Highsmith is Pres. & CEO of Timberline Resources, a mineral exploration and resource development company focused on gold and copper discoveries in north-central Nevada, USA. He is also the Chairman of Firefox Gold Corp.
