Tell us about your first summer job.
"My first ‘professional’ summer job was as an intern with the City of Los Angeles in 1971. I worked for minimum wage (about $2/hour at the time), roomed with my brother (sleeping on a mattress on his living room floor), and commuted several hours a day in intense LA traffic, so it was no piece of cake. What it gave me was firsthand exposure to the workings of a large metropolitan agency."
