The Thread's Must-Reads
"The Feather Thief" by Kirk Wallace Johnson Buy this book Behold, The Thread’s best of the year lists! Of course, we all know list-making is random and fickle and always leaves a great book (or four) out in the cold. But we love sharing our favorites with you — and hearing about your own best reads of 2018. Below you’ll find The Thread’s top fiction and nonfiction picks of year. Since a human brain can only handle so many recommendations at one time, I’ll keep this simple: Today I’m sharing the two books I can’t wait to read next. One is a book I missed this year, and the other is bound to be one of the biggest of 2019. The book I missed? “The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century” by Kirk Wallace Johnson. Natural history heist? Yes, please. This is the true story of a concert musician who raided the feather collection of an esteemed British museum, and stole specimens that were up to 150 years old. I love a good caper, and I’m going to dive into this one on the plane. Then, I’m over the moon to crack open Marlon James’ new fantasy epic, “Black Leopard, Red Wolf.” It doesn’t come out until Feb. 5, but Neil Gaiman has already hailed it, saying James has crafted “a fantasy world as well-realized as anything Tolkien made.” Seems like a good way to start a new reading year. And, if I can make one more recommendation: Check out The Slowdown. It’s a daily podcast and newsletter from U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith. Every weekday, Smith selects a poem to read and explores what she thinks that poem can offer. It’s like a poetry master class and a moment of meditation all in one, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with Smith on it this year. Find it at slowdownshow.org or wherever you listen to podcasts. -Tracy Mumford
