If you look inside my freezer, you'll find what I like to call my "stock market" — cubes of homemade stock that I've frozen to use for the base of soups and sauces. Why do I use these instead of convenient boxed stocks? Well, I cook a lot for my mom, whose migraines are triggered by the slightest bit of yeast extract, a common ingredient in store-bought stock. If you, like me, have ever cooked for someone who's sensitive to the multisyllabic additives and preservatives that are thrown into packaged foods these days, you want to do everything you can to prevent your loved one from feeling discomfort! I highly recommend reading reporter Julie Kendrick's story about nutritionists' go-to stocks, not only for some great store-bought picks but to learn about what could be lurking in the soups you're making.
XO, Kristen
