MOST INFLUENTIAL 2024

At No. 8 on our list of this year’s most influential Torontonians: Geoffrey Hinton. Last year, the godfather of AI retired from his gig at Google and began to speak out about the dangerous implications of the technology he helped to develop. This year, a committee of Nobel brainiacs gave Hinton’s historical import the ultimate seal of approval. He shared the Nobel Prize for physics, in part for his work developing backpropagation—the method that allows neural networks to learn.

Ryan Silverstein’s great-grandfather Kalman, a Polish immigrant, started Silverstein’s Bakery on Baldwin Street in 1918. Bread ran in the family, but Ryan initially pursued a career in music, working as Drake’s assistant, and fashion—before he realized his true calling and opened a bakery of his own.
